No-one's said Elon Musk for well over a year, so here's an Elon/Grimes update for 2020: I don't care.

Ha, I was literally about to type "the doings of Elon Musk and/or Grimes".

84. USA politics. i followed this for 12 years and now i just don't care.

US politics. Or rather, I wish I didn't care, but I'm afraid it would make me less Canadian.

US politics. I mean that is the dumbest shit going

At least, I'm letting myself not pay attention to US politics for the time being.

Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer (no idea who she is btw).

pomenitul, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 18:20 (six years ago)

I actually played an Amanda Palmer track the other day, as I realised I hated her without having heard a note of her music. It was the sort of witchy-poo Tori Amos-lite goth-rock nonsense I was expecting, shall not be returning.

the Other Music documentary (sorry)

100% agreement. I spent a fair amount of money there once upon a time (it was my third or fourth favorite record store in that part of NYC in the early 2000s, after Tower on 4th & Broadway and Mondo Kim's and possibly Downtown Music Gallery), but what kind of person would want to watch a documentary about a goddamn record store?

Idk 'The Kim's Video & Music Story' has the makings of a pretty colorful documentary. I really wanna know what happened with that crazy shrine to Mr. Kim in Sicily. Now he was a colorful character.
OM was the better record store imo, but hardly documentary fodder.

idc if your team had to literally bake the 90-year-old film and substitute missing frames from an inferior second-generation copy and painstakingly retouch the damaged frames one-by-one over a 15-year period to restore it to watchable condition. I appreciate your efforts, but it's been done before and I've gotten the gist of it by now, so I really don't need to see a mini documentary about the process. sorry

+1 on Other Music doc. A great record store with knowledgeable staff, and I even have fuzzy memories of shopping there, but...what story is there to tell? What "behind the scenes" info would enrich my memories? Did the owner trek through the Amazon rainforest to find rare ESP Disk releases or something?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 14:57 (six years ago)

Through the Amazon warehouse more like.

i wonder what percentage of the Kim collection include works that aren't readily available? And what percentage includes works that are genuinely elusive?

Is anything elusive nowadays? Seems like pretty much every mega-rarity is up on youtube in its entirety, other than the ones tied up in ownership wrangles. Probably easier to see them there than trek out to Sicily.

I'm grateful for the luxury of being able to tell myself Joe Biden, or even the entity of US politics, is not relevant to my life, even if that's almost certainly not true.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 15:47 (six years ago)

Is anything elusive nowadays?

as a regular heavy fisher in brackish waters i can categorically answer this with a resounding YES. there's tons of films/tv/concerts/events that aren't available commercially or as torrents or on youtube either consistently or sporadically and a lot of that stuff was (is?), at one time, available on VHS cassette somewhere in the world. How much of that is part of the Kim collection, I dunno.

WAY off topic now but swing by this year's Orphan Film Festival for some examples: https://wp.nyu.edu/orphanfilm/

I have a box of 7" singles I just took out of storage and would guess that 50% of them are not available on youtube or spotify, and it's not like I was going out of my way to pick up obscurities. Most are from the mid-late-90s, groups that were covered in the music papers, now you can barely find evidence that they existed on the internet.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 26 May 2020 17:01 (six years ago)

It's true that a lot of those 'single of the week' bands fell through the cracks.

Karagarga, not Youtube, is probably the online resource most comparbale to Kim's Video. It's a different kind of collection and I think the ratio requirements of KG probably discourages people from leeching stuff like Shrek that's freely available on less exclusive trackers. I don't think there's much porn on KG etc.

I think most of you are being unfair to Other Music. Agreed that the documentary is quite unnecessary (to put it charitably). Most of the money I spent there (which wasn't all that much) was on staff recommendations i'd never heard of. In the early years they often recommend stuff they didn't stock and direct me to even more niche stores I didn't know about to pick it up. The cleaner interior probably took after Shibuya style as was the fashion at the time, and it suited their MO which was more cosmopolitan or international maybe, I suppose what this board calls "Wire-y".
By the way, the owner licensed and reissued the first 3 Mutantes LP's on their Omplatten label before David Byrne (or Polydor) got around to it. Anyone setting foot in the store in 1998 would have heard A Divina Comedia playing, on repeat if you hung around long enough. Those albums were completely unavailable on CD outside Japan at the time.

Should OM/Kim's crosstalk be moved to NYC record stores thread?

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 02:52 (six years ago)

Can I just say sending the Kim's collection to Sicily was a really stupid thing to do tho. And is digitizing it even a good idea? My thinking is a lot of this stuff has since been released in higher quality formats, plus nobody really knows the lifespan of a hard drive etc.

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 02:58 (six years ago)

It should be preserved in the format that it's in IMO.

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 02:58 (six years ago)

xxp Shibuya style interiors? What's that? I've been to a lot of shops over there but never to Outside. I watched the documentary as soon as it was available. I think it works as a general look at the decline of music retail and semi resurgence with vinyl. Aaaand now what? Interesting release model where half the money goes to an existing shop of your choice.

maffew12, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 03:02 (six years ago)

I don't know. Everything in 1996 seemed to have that Pan Am look, like a 70's airport. By 1999 it had evolved p something more like Disneyland meets Bladerunner. This is a style I associate with Shibuya.
