they've reengineered the payment plans and I think, unless you are getting a deal with your carrier where you're getting some bonkers deal, it's worth buying direct from apple

hell, right now you might be able to double-dip by getting their virtual credit card and then just not paying the bill for a few months during the virus

AT&T US has the promo as $5 x 30mos. (+ $30 activation fee & tax on MSRP) for the 64GB...

The 256GB is $15 x 30mos. + above.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 17 April 2020 16:15 (six years ago)

Lol USA

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Friday, 17 April 2020 16:17 (six years ago)

Ack, the catch for the 64GB promo is "requires new line", existing customers looks like $10 x 30mos iirtc.

everything being some sort of haggling car sales transaction is tiring

at least now you can buy a phone, pick a provider, and just connect A to B even if you're not getting the absolute best price

I found it really telling that one car salesperson I dealt with years ago had formerly been a cell phone salesperson. The other guy I bought a car from later became a realtor. My head hurts.

I have no idea how hardware/provider pairings work. I still have my old 5s hanging around, bought from Consumer Cellular. Can anyone who buys it use it with their sim card?

truly insane country.

Likely only on AT&T or T-Mobile (or other GSM carriers), as Consumer Cellular uses their networks, and back then iPhones sold by those carriers didn't work on CDMA-based carriers like Verizon or Sprint. Also, you'll need to have CC unlock it first, which shouldn't be a problem if you've fulfilled the original typically 2-year contract.

See here for differences between 5s models; I'm guessing yours is the A1533 (GSM) - https://www.techwalls.com/iphone-5s-a1533-a1453-a1457-a1530-differences

Lee626, Friday, 17 April 2020 23:04 (six years ago)

I did it. probably stupid to pay an extra ยฃ100 for the 256GB but ehhhh fuck it. paying monthly makes the difference feel negligible. hotly anticipating now :)

RIP 2 me

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Monday, 20 April 2020 18:57 (six years ago)

unless you're within like three blocks of a 5g tower it's not going to do you any good anyway

mh, Monday, 20 April 2020 19:23 (six years ago)

Apparently mine is coming tomorrow!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 April 2020 22:27 (six years ago)

Unboxing video ftw

ncxkd, Thursday, 23 April 2020 22:28 (six years ago)

well it feels absolutely massive compared to my previous SE but i'm sure i'll get used to it. nice and thin is a bit of compensation i guess.

the process of switching from an old iPhone to a new one is pretty wild now. there's a kind of swirly circular QR code on the new phone that you line up in the camera of the old one, and then it starts transferring stuff.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2020 10:49 (six years ago)

What colour did you get?

stet, Friday, 24 April 2020 11:09 (six years ago)

black. they all have black bevels so black's the only one that looks right to me. the others look a bit like you've added a decal wrap to the back or something. actually transferring /updating is taking FOREVER.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2020 11:16 (six years ago)

mine is out for delivery

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Friday, 24 April 2020 11:33 (six years ago)

I bought an 8 plus exactly a year ago because I wanted the button and didnโ€™t like the X - I can get $250 trade in for it now so one of these would be $150 out of pocket. My battery life isnโ€™t shitty yet but is getting lower. Is it worth it? I imagine my trade in value will be significantly lower 12 months from now.

joygoat, Friday, 24 April 2020 19:02 (six years ago)

Iโ€™d say yes, for a fresh battery, better camera, more RAM and faster chip. As long as you donโ€™t mind the smaller display size

calstars, Friday, 24 April 2020 19:49 (six years ago)

i loved my original SE but god it's easier to read things on the new one.

photos are incredible.

i does feel like it's always about to squirt out of my hands, though. and i can't believe they don't include a headphone adapter! fuck's sake.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2020 20:17 (six years ago)

re: size, i can juuuuuuust stretch my thumb up to the back button on ILX so i'm good.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2020 20:17 (six years ago)

In zing? You can just swipe from the far left to the right. No need to reach for the back button.

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Friday, 24 April 2020 21:04 (six years ago)

uh uh UH MUH GUH

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2020 21:05 (six years ago)

That works in almost all apps with an idea of โ€œbackโ€ btw

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Friday, 24 April 2020 21:06 (six years ago)

and now I understand why!

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2020 21:32 (six years ago)

Thereโ€™s also a system setting (called Reachability iirc) which lets you double tap Home to slide the top of the screen down within reach

stet, Friday, 24 April 2020 21:36 (six years ago)

mark me as another who was happy to just learn that

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 24 April 2020 21:41 (six years ago)

why is it so slidy

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Saturday, 25 April 2020 06:04 (six years ago)

bring back matte backs

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Saturday, 25 April 2020 06:05 (six years ago)

finally caught my iphone xr squirming off the table the other day. this piece of shit absolutely cannot wait to fall off any object itโ€™s currently on.

in all other respects i like the phone. apart from the mail downloads, the keyborad/autocorrect, the odd ability to inadvertently turn the torch on without realising it (still not sure what iโ€™m doing there) and slightly janky approach to wifi (tho iโ€™m not sure this is the phone)

but begob its a slippy motherfucker.

Thank you for being the early adopter here, TH - thinking about one too. Iโ€™d made my peace with 4โ€ phones never coming back and was ready to seek out a refurbed 8 until they announced the 2020 SE. So I need to cough up for a headphone adaptor and some kind of grippy case, yeah?

This magic transfer from old phone to new - this circumvents restoring backup entirely?

Michael Jones, Sunday, 26 April 2020 21:15 (six years ago)

it didn't work for me. it stalled out. I was never able to re-summon the swirly magic circle. So I had to restore from a backup. Which felt like it took way too long. Otherwise fine.

Yep I've got a cloth (!!?) case and a jack winging their way towards me as I speak.

I hesitate to mention the camera on to you Mike because I know what I great photographer you are but the camera is absolutely outstanding compared to my old SE.

It is big enough that I am needing to relearn things - particularly the back button which as mentioned I can only just stretch to now. But I'm sure in a few days I won't even remember that I did it any other way.

It definitely feels more 'different' - more luxurious - than my SE felt from my 5S.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 26 April 2020 23:01 (six years ago)

My 13yo recently told me that "big cameras are a boomer clichรฉ" so, who knows, I may actually be back in her good books if I start taking more phone snaps.

Still weighing up the numbers before taking the plunge; can't really spring for an extra ยฃ17/month over my current SE + SIM-only arrangement, so I'm hoping to find a decent deal. The routine every couple of years has been to "live chat" the folks on the EE website and wangle myself something better than they're advertising. Not surprisingly, that's not an option at the moment. Either hoping for SE-2020 on a contract for only a bit more than I'm currently paying, or change the SIM-only deal to something even cheaper, and buy the handset from Apple.

Of course, the original SE has been *just fine* these last few weeks. Barely going anywhere, not searching for 4G signals or streaming audio, the battery lasts all day... It doesn't really need replacing.
