Also jonviachicago, you don't need to apologize for "hogging the thread" -- I still feel bad for making you feel last week like you never wanted to meet any of us.

Oh interesting, gr@ant reyn0lds, really neat graphic-novel type guy (cartoonist? illustrator? what do you call them) and nice guy to boot, also works that seafood counter.

Haha no worries, I still want to meet you all. Just no drama plz. I think I was just more surprised that there was any drama because you all seem to be pretty cool, laid back types.

world music = Tim Robbins in High Fidelity
― kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:23 (sixteen years ago) link
World music that I actively listen to:
old reggae/ska/rocksteady/dub Ethiopiques Fela Kuti and similar afropop Daft Punk
― n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link
would you be happier if they called the the Chicago International Music Festival?
that's probably more accurate, although from the program it looks like there are some cheezy fusion groups playing. you'll have that. but there's good stuff too!
― La Lechera, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link
Ethiopiques are the best.
Way to get a tattoo, Jesse.
― Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:27 (sixteen years ago) link
I had fun listening to some of the world music fest clips here. It especially made me interested in balkan music.

THANKS JORDAN YOU TOO

I love many different kinds of Latin music (both trad and modern), Ethiopian jazz/funk, some eastern-jazz fusion stuff and all sorts of European folk, traditional or modern. I don't think UK folk counts as "world music" but that's probably my favorite. I have some Korean rock. I like I saw that movie Gypsy Caravan and EVEN THOUGH it was definitely a movie intended for NPR listeners, I enjoyed it anyway. I like the world's music, I guess.
I dunno if this qualifies as "world music" but it rules http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/35/Journey_in_Satchidananda_(Alice_Coltrane).jpg

I like Balkan music. It's cool seeing people folk dance in 7.
― Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:38 (sixteen years ago) link
This is but one reason why I like emusic -- there is a lot of interesting stuff on there that I would never find/hear otherwise. Also they have tons of Fania releases.
― La Lechera, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:39 (sixteen years ago) link
I need more education on world music. I really like African music from what I can tell, but I don't know if I'm able to narrow it down to a more specific region/country.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:41 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, plus most of the "African" music I listen to is pretty heavily influenced by Western music. I like all the highlife stuff I've heard, some pretty awesome guitar on there.
― n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link
I end up hearing most non-western music on the radio, although I've got some Brazilian, African, Cuban, and Indian cds that I'm into (mostly drumming-centric stuff).
― Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link
For African stuff I basically have various afrobeat records + some West African drumming things (Drummers of Burundi = A+).
― Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:43 (sixteen years ago) link
alice coltrane x2, love that record, yes plz. I had a huge Impulse! phase in college. My other favorite was Pharaoh Sanders - Karma.

This is a totally cool record:

When I was in high school my mom went to Eastern Europe on a choir tour and brought me back some really, really bad Czech and Hungarian hard rock CDs.
I really like ska/rocksteady/dub/reggae.

I guess I hardly think of Jamaican music as "foreign" at all, just because it's so heavily influenced by U.S. music and vice versa (and the African diaspora blah blah blah).
― Jordan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link
But you can take that to the extreme that there's no such thing as "foreign" music to United Staters.
― n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link
Well, yeah, that "Teen Dance Music" record I posted is basically taking western music and playing with Eastern instruments, so it feels less foreign. But it's awesome stuff; even the non-Ennio Morricone tracks sound like Ennio Morricone, played on such foreign instruments.
― kenan, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:50 (sixteen years ago) link
Sure, "world music" is a pretty meaningless and arbitrary term, but so is every other genre classification.
― n/a, Monday, 17 September 2007 15:50 (sixteen years ago) link
I like Orchestra Baobob and saw these guys at the African festival a few weeks ago and liked them a lot.

So. When a client comes in I always offer them coffee. This one guy came in earlier and I offered him coffee.
He said, "Oh sure, I'll take a decaf."
OUTRAGEOUS!!!

I feel like shit. Weird sort of hangover from food and booze-laden weekend. And I have to meet a guy from WorkerJusticeInc. tonight for drinks and I rrrrreally don't want to.
:(
― Jesse, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link
True, but I still see a difference between stuff like afrobeat, where the local rhythms are translated to drumset and guitars and keys etc., and musicians trying to play some kind of traditional folk style (which I guess in this case would be the West African drums + vocals groups).

I'm up for the reinstatement of TT, especially now that the FFs aren't doing anything during the week. However, I can't do TT this week because I'm taking the GRE on Sat. and I need to cram this week. I took one of the computer simulations yesterday, I got a 780/800 on the verbal and a 420/800 on the math. ;_;
I don't need math to do library science, right?
