X-post - an occasional ilx -er tells me that dj Gil Bailey was once on small listener-funded WHBI out of New Jersey right before Mr. Magic’s Rap Attack in the early 1980s on Friday nights. Mr Magic later moved to big commercial NY radio, while Bailey moved to AM radio

Ρεμπετολογια, Thursday, 16 April 2020 00:45 (six years ago)

I loved that album he did with jimmy giuffre..RIP Lee

calzino, Thursday, 16 April 2020 01:20 (six years ago)

i saw konitz at a company week in the mid 80s, blithely negotiating derek b's militantly free improv his way, and tbh he was the best thing abt the week and one of the best live shows i ever saw

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 16 April 2020 11:40 (six years ago)

(marcello just told me he was in the same audience, we didn't know each other back then)

People who you thought were dead. RIP Lee.

The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 April 2020 12:23 (six years ago)

Last time I saw him Donald Fagen was in the audience. No sign of a weeping Lou Reed though. Nor a pork-pie hatted bespectacled Anglo-Irishman bearing a birthday cake.

Keiji Fujiwara, after a long battle with cancer.
https://www.oricon.co.jp/news/2160153/full/

one of Japan's top voice actors, he has too much stuff to list, but if you have any passing interest in anime or video games you've probably heard his work numerous times https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keiji_Fujiwara

RIP Lee Konitz. Loved the fact that he engaged with Derek Bailey and Keiji Haino at a time in his life/career when it would have been so much easier to play it safe.

This is also one of my v favourite alb covers and seems quite poignant today:

I really dig the one he did with Giuffre and mainly know him through sideman projects but he was clearly a massively huuuge talent. What would be his best album to you?

calzino, Thursday, 16 April 2020 14:02 (six years ago)

Motion, as mentioned on the other thread.

Brian Dennehy. I thought he died a few years ago. He was 81. Not COVID-related.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 16 April 2020 17:32 (six years ago)

Sad. He was America's answer to Otm Shank.

Bougy! Bougie! Bougé! (Eliza D.), Thursday, 16 April 2020 17:47 (six years ago)

I saw Dennehy onstage in an all-star Cherry Orchard, not his Willy Loman alas.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 April 2020 17:51 (six years ago)

Ah shit. Dennehy was the best. F/X still one of my favorites of his. And of course First Blood, Silverado etc. And all those Dad roles on tv! If you needed a Chicago dad, Irish cop dad, sports dad, you got Dennehy.

Norman Hunter, Leeds United player, 76 of Covid-19.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 17 April 2020 11:43 (six years ago)

wp:

A tough tackling centre-half and defensive midfielder, he was nicknamed "Bites Yer Legs" Hunter. The nickname originated from a banner held up by Leeds United fans at the 1972 FA Cup Final against Arsenal; the banner simply read "Norman bites yer legs".
