re: slay the spire, i can't actually remember if it made my ballot but i did spend a LOT of time with it last year. an excellent little... whatever it is. i don't really play roguelikes, or deckbuilders, but I think it's both of those? it's very satisfying to get far in (I have even "beaten" it 2 or 3 times). when you uncover cool card combos you feel like a genius.
― Hackers (1995) (Will M.), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 15:59 (six years ago)
it is indeed a roguelike deckbuilder
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 16:00 (six years ago)
I voted for SMM2 despite not playing it myself. The variety of user levels that you can see on youtube is amazing.
― wasdnuos (abanana), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 16:09 (six years ago)
I did play smm2 but also voted for it on the strength of its YouTube videos

i've come around on this game being good but it still feels like a greatest hits album of jrpg bits to me without a strong throughline. also the third act kinda ruins the whole story in the service of one or two Whoa Cool moments
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 16:35 (six years ago)

My co-first place! it was so refreshing to haave a kojima weirdo game with a glimmer of hope in it?

― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:09 (six years ago)
three houses is a great visual novel, not an amazing tactics game
sounds like my type of fire emblem
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:15 (six years ago)
played 30 hours of three houses, quit, for the reason mordy mentioned. i've never played a fire emblem game before, so i'm glad i checked it out.
― let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:20 (six years ago)
i've been trying to post this annoying opinion less often, but i just don't like video game stories, most of the time. like if i want to watch a "visual novel", i would much, much rather re-watch game of thrones seasons 1-4
― let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:21 (six years ago)
Slay the Spire is the game I've played the most in the last few months. A total gem.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:22 (six years ago)
I may have voted for Short Hike if I'd played it before I voted. Really nice lil' game. The flying mechanic is so simple but so good.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:24 (six years ago)
Wow, I did not expect my #1 to beat out Death Stranding.

― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:33 (six years ago)
finally! so i only tossed this 5 pts bc i assumed it would do well but i've since voted played much more of it and it deserved more points from me. the mechanics are legitimately joyful (flying! tossing objects around!) and the tone + setting is v X-files-esque without (generally going too overboard with the homage). the cigarette smoking guy maybe too far. i can't understand half of what the janitor is saying. half the guns work shitty and aren't worth bothering with. the game has bathrooms everywhere and nothing in any of them. you'd think they'd have enough bathrooms by now so do they?

apparently not
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:34 (six years ago)
it's fun to clobber monsters with giant slabs of casework and some of the puzzles + stages (inc apparently the one i'm up to which is supposedly the creme de le creme of the game) are legit innovative + exciting. many parts are authentically unnerving without needing jump scares. some of the music is fantastic, the sound design v creepy + great.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:36 (six years ago)
it's an imperfect game but it's a really great one
I've been super-intrigued by Control since I first laid eyes on it, which is not something I can say for AAA games generally. I should probably break down and get a PS4 or Xbone to play it.
― may the force leave us alone (zchyrs), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:43 (six years ago)
inc apparently the one i'm up to which is supposedly the creme de le creme of the game
Just a pointer: this part isn't ~really~ a puzzle, you either can get through it or you can't, and the game will tell you that pretty quickly, so don't spend too much time trying to crack this nut.
Also, if you have a souped-up PC, that's probably the best platform to play it on, for the ray tracing goodness.
― Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:44 (six years ago)
OTOH the PS4 version has a weird and hilarious DLC starring Kojima's voice.
― Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:45 (six years ago)
This Fire Emblem has heart. The tactics themselves are way less relevant to victory (at least on normal+casual) than minmaxing your character builds, but I like minmaxing and getting people new outfits classes more than tricky tactics anyway.
― silby, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:45 (six years ago)
i am up to it - i went once before and got stopped but i've since done the *stuff* that made it clear it's time xxp
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:45 (six years ago)
i'm gonna play the fire emblem on hard+casual because i'm a casual gamer fronting as a hardcore one

― Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:52 (six years ago)
so sekiro looks cool but it's a dark souls / bloodborne game right? i just don't find that whole thing v enjoyable.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:52 (six years ago)
as per my previous post i don't enjoy fromsoft games though this one certainly looks pretty compared to dark souls
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:53 (six years ago)
i watched dunkey play it zombie monkey boss looked dope
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:53 (six years ago)
xp it's even harder than dark souls / bloodborne since it's not an rpg so you can't 'get ahead' of the difficulty curve via levels/build
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:55 (six years ago)
uh oh I don't know what one of the games in the top 3 is :\ :/
― silby, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:56 (six years ago)
i think i know all 3...
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:57 (six years ago)
I was blanking on the third too but then I reviewed my ballot, and the only question I have is order.
― Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:58 (six years ago)
i don't know the order but all 3 have been mentioned itt already
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:58 (six years ago)
they're all indie games if that helps
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 April 2020 17:59 (six years ago)
Sekiro and Death Stranding were both games my bf played a lot last year, I threw the latter some points but not the former, it just wasn't as fun to watch. I know some people weren't so keen on the idea of me voting for something I'd not actually been at the controls for, but I do feel like it was a considered choice based on experiencing the game and not breaking the rules of the poll. Apologies to those who are still annoyed by it, though.
