Welp my boyfriend's kids just got here from the city for a visit so I will be conspicuously not touching my face for three days and looking crazy wiping everything.

Neanderthal, when did your friend feel symptoms and how long did a nearly full recovery take?

Pretty sure there is advice out there about how to understand the differences in temperature readings for sublingual, forehead, axillary (armpit) and rectal methods.

We usually did foreheads with little kids because they don't sit still well enough for other methods, and our doctors have always done the same and have been okay with what we are doing.

In 49 years as a human and 13 as a parent, I have never seen a nurse or doctor take a rectal temp, nor recommend one. And presumably they know a thing or two about fevers and accurate measurement thereof.

the fever wasn't there right away, but she felt symptoms like a cough and shortness of breath. this was about 13 days ago. Her boss told her to stfu about it and that it was statistically improbable that she had it. She went home that night, the low-grade fever showed up.

The recovery took a long time. She messaged me her temp every day and she was febrile for probably 8-9 days, never more than 100.4, usually in the 99s. Breathing at night fluctuated in ease. Some days she felt fine, others not so great.

I talked to her last night and she said fever was finally gone, she's mostly back to normal and her quarantine ends on Tuesday. so....probably a week and a half! and she's a 24 year old in good health.

but naturally the severity varies by person.

hey Tracer, rare poster but frequent lurker here, wishing you all the best. I have a friend here in Western Massachusetts who is just now coming on the mend after about 12 days of persistent fever that would go several days without breaking, then would break and come back quickly. Also thankfully had no respiratory symptoms. Hang in there!

my buddy who passed out in the ER is now doing light housework and getting caught up on work. On the plus side when you're on the other side of this plus quarantine, you guys win the get out of jail free card of presumptive immunity!

Haven't read all the above but ... I don't know anything much about Jenny Harries, deputy chief medical officer [in the UK] but it bothers me that it is her picture that appears at the Guardian (online) alongside the suggestion that the pressure is growing to provide PPE after doctors have died.

I went out for the first time in 10 days yesterday after shaking my probably not corona cough. Masked up* and wore gloves to go to the Chinese super market. My neighbourhood is very Vietnamese/Cantonese and it was noticeable that my Asian background neighbors are very good at keeping to one side of the path, waiting for you to come out of the grocery aisle before you go in, wearing masks and gloves, (Chinese market has both for sale); my european background neighbours, not so much.

*My wife has been sewing masks, hopefully they catch some of what I’m breathing out but definitely help with the not touching your face thing.

Ugh. I grew up there. There’s no hospital there and there are people that live there year round. I heard from a friend that several city households had come out trying to get away but its a potential recipe for disaster. :(

Just realising after reading mention of psychological toll on the outbreak thread.
The main local river is really high as I walk by it over last couple of weeks. There had been a pretty recent directive to watch that people weren't jumping in, I think set up towards the end of last year. Used to be that any time I walked by there was someone around in a high viz jacket or waistcoat who was part of this program. It's called Corris watch. Suicide prevention. Maybe I have the time wrong and they were only doing it at night which I'm not sure made perfect sense.
Would think that it was something that had numbers of potential jumpers going up in current situation rather than down. So shame it isn't a 24 hour service now but it does involve potential Covid catchers which may be why it isn't.
Like in the absence of quasi intelligent androids it involved somebody being present at site who would need to be exposed to the public. Haven't heard what the results so far are but since it was a recognised problem before this pandemic I can assume it will have only gotten worse in such a potentially depressing isolating time.

Just before our work got closed down the Swedish woman I work with was trying to organize flights for her and her children to go to Sweden - she's from somewhere way in the North, miles away from anywhere, has lots of anecdotes about moose and freezing weather. alls you need to do reconnect the water supply and stick the waste on (there is usually a jubilee clip on it) and the water pipe usually just screws on and off. You don't need a bloody plumber for that mate!

Our new dishwasher stopped working after one week. Bloke came to look at it before the official lockdown and it needs a new door sensor thing. Now it's the lockdown I assume there's no chance of getting it. Hope the company doesn't go bust or we've just lost several hundred quid :(

Can you MacGyver the door sensor with a paper clip or something?
