messing around with some iridescent gold acrylic paint. it's really weird. unless you gloop it on heavily, it's terribly thin and transparent. not in a good way. don't know wtf is going on with that one so far but it's saturday night

hi Karl, I enjoyed the track a lot, liked the guitar sound
interesting to see your paintings evolve too. definitely inspiring to see yr things take shape, and to see someone fight against this horrible anxious block which I guess we're all feeling now. anyway, thanks, take care
― a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:56 (six years ago)
thanks for listening! it is my first electric guitar and amp (ES-339 and Fender blues jr IV), so i don't have much to compare it to, but it seems to be good at handling bright Byrds-like tones.
i had my first total painting failure last night. 6 hours spent on it, and i completely ruined it at the end.

haha well yeah, it's true. i feel that way most of the time. but holy shit every once in a while i wish i could Undo. maybe just like one big Undo you can do, per week, so that you have to make it count

i've painted half of this! but if i repeat what i just painted, upside down, as a different layer, and adjust the opacity and saturation down, it'll look like this! so pretty much halfway there, rounding up to done
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 06:51 (six years ago)
sorry, drunk. what i mean is that i'm going to try to take the current version
and paint a new layer over parts of it that look like above
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 06:59 (six years ago)
and by "rounding up to done" i was trying to make a joke about being halfway done and obviously far away from finishing but rounding up to the next milestone ("done")
i have been recently informed that some of my jokes aren't landing and don't even make sense. things got a little dry over here, humorwise, on my part

Big fan of all of these. Animated panels of a sketchbook is a fantastic idea. Would love to see a photomontage-type short film in this style.

hi Karl, image hosting related question here. hope you don't mind me posting it in yr thread. seems imgur now requires a phone number to create an account. i don't like that. what are my alternatives ? how does this look to you:
https://vgy.me/
― budo jeru, Tuesday, 5 May 2020 22:17 (six years ago)
of course budo, it's always nice to have company on this thread! :)
i guess the answer to your question depends on what you're looking to do with the image hosting. for just posting images and getting a link to share them online (like this thread), i'm pretty sure you don't need an account with imgur. you can just do it as a rando person, not signed in. the account is more for "community" (the imgur comment community is among the worst on the internet) and for keeping track of old images you uploaded. but if you just want to quickly upload an image and share it, you can do that without logging in.
if you're looking for a more professional/advanced option, i think options like Flickr are still pretty popular, but i definitely don't know much about that side of things. i'm a longtime down-and-dirty imgur uploader

xp to tangenttangent thank you! i like that idea a lot too! i will probably give it a shot sometime (in a limited, 'let's give it a shot' fashion) soon.
it's an interesting thing to think about, in terms of what kinds of painted shapes and lines offer more creative flexibility on the animation side. generally, clean crisp lines with highly contrasted foreground/background elements are easier to animate. but the nice thing about photoshop and other apps is that if you want to spend enough time, you can deal with pretty much whatever. but if i knew ahead of time that i would be animating it, i could choose subject matter that would make my life easier. could be fun!

commodity VPS hosting is also super cheap now and guides to configuring a webserver on them abound, so like, there's always hosting it yourself. You might keep paying for hosting longer than imgur does for all you know! xxp

here's mx computer guy with the unhelpful difficult suggestions that cost money
― silby, Tuesday, 5 May 2020 22:49 (six years ago)
haha, no that sounds legit! i think it all depends on what you want to do with the images.
personally, for anything that is shared online, i just use a simple easy host (imgur) with the understanding that like any other company on the internet, it'll probably be bought out by some group of jerks and ruined, then shut down. i always keep the originals on my own hard drive - well, NOW i do, after the tinypic disaster of whatever year that was - and figure that at some point in the next 5-10 years everything online will be broken yet again

i posted this on the 77 depresso thread (while i was nearly passing out, whoops). i need to change a few things but it's generally done. the 2 personal milestones for me on this were that it was the first thing i've painted without a reference image, and that i was able to do it just a couple hours. i definitely don't think that less time spent on something is better, in and of itself, but i had been spending waaaaaay too long on them recently, which is cool but seems ill-advised for early-stage amateur efforts. at an early stage of learning something it seems more valuable to spend that time working on different aspects of the discipline, rather than endlessly refining your 6th painting ever (or whatever)
https://i.imgur.com/srY0tZ1.jpg
that's a very large image, so feel free to open in a new tab if you want to see every ill-advised brush stroke, zoom into a nearly empty glass of whiskey, or admire my ohio-shaped coaster
