woah how do you grow up in south east london but never go to brighton til you're like 20?

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:27 (fourteen years ago) link

A friend at Sussex Uni was having a housewarming, but we got there in the afternoon and so went a-roving. Spot-the-guy-with-a-guitar is the finest of Brighton games. There's an overpriced but very tasty brunch place called Bill's which is basically like a bit of Camden-By-Sea, the whole Whole Foods mother-earth aesthetic truly in force, the shelves all stacked with healthy jars of produce. I say overpriced; their portions are, I must admit, generous.

Blueski, I have no idea. I'm definitely returning before another 22 years are up. Interestingly, I've been to Hastings before. Kent is usually the direction I travel in if we head for the wilds.

having said that i think i only went there once between birth and turning 22 myself

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Also, how do they fit FOUR different roller-coasters and a Rameses Revenge-style whirler onto the very very end of their pier? Makes no sense.

OH SHIT, Gareth uses "Camden-By-The-Sea" in his opening post!!!!!! I thought of that description independently when sat in Bill's! Gareth, we are of one mind. If it's any consolation, my friend said "more Islington, really"

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I was there y'day and today with my brother and some family. BILL'S foodstore was possibly best fryup I've ever had. Also really good Indian the name of which escapes me, v diff type of Indian to the usual...I like Brighton.

Bill's does the best, most healthy looking scrambled eggs. And French toast only bettered in the US. And their fish finger sandwiches are like WOAH. I'm hungry now. For Bill's.

Where was the Indian?

looks like everyone has the same Brighton experience lol

although mine involved MAD stone-skimming. Two indie girls came up to us and asked us to teach them how to do it. My demonstration stone, I shit you not, bounced about 15 times. It was a real validation of masculinity. Eventually, one of the girls bounced it once or twice and, satisfied, wandered off, after telling me to come see their friend's screamo band on Saturday

also the drugs thing is OTM, we were meant to play football the next day but my friend's friends, having gathered in their kit, simply sat around smoking weed until we had to go home

Guy de & (country matters), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I still haven't been to Bill's. This thread is making me want to go.

Also, lol at stone-skipping being a validation of masculinity. TWEE.

emil.y, Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Bill's did the most wondrous orange, lime and papaya crush which seemed to go on forever. Am tempted to revive ILX thread "Are crushes awesome?" just for that tbh

It really felt like some kind of small victory lolz and besides we were in Brighton, ain't being cutesy and kooky the name of the game? Secretly, for me stone-skimming is a brutal and highly competitive affirmation of one's masculine commune with nature but I didn't let it on for fear of scaring everyone.

I heartily encourage all visitors to throw as many stones into the sea as possible. I know there's a sandy beach under that lot somewhere, just waiting to be uncovered.

(Good luck with your gig Matt!)

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 25 June 2009 11:49 (fourteen years ago) link

I had begun to write off Bills after they got partly takenover with the aim of becoming a chain, introducing a stealth 10/15% price increase by moving to full table service, and having a couple of full breakfasts there which didn't match their early heights of excellence (It's all I ever get as they can be so good). But we got a free meal voucher so went down about a month ago and it was probably the best I'd ever had there, so maybe they've pulled it back. The juices and smoothies are also pretty decent.

The best breakfast I've had in Brighton was at Sam's of Brighton next to the Hanbury, but that's almost twice as much as Bills again, and miles out of town. Excellent produce perfectly cooked though.

White Rabiit: Not sure what it will be like on Saturday, I think it depends on the day as it does get a fair bit of touristy trade, but I don't think it's likely to be mega busy - especially not after the point Rob starts banging out some wonky techno (^_^)

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 12:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Cheers Nick! Are you coming to loop?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 12:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Naw, after all my bold talk, I'm pretty much broke as a joke.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:11 (fourteen years ago) link

That's a shame, let me know if you see any cheap/free gigs coming up which look interesting

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 June 2009 13:25 (fourteen years ago) link

this is exactly the reason why me and my gf are coming to brighton for a couple of days next month.. She told that when we come to the UK in the summer she wants to see the sea and go on a rollercoster..

Its been about ten years since i last went to brighton, how is it for second hand vinyl shops these days.. any recommendations? (especially places with bargain bins)

Sorry for not turning up last night - a friend from university turned up in Brighton unexpectedly and dragged me to a party. Now my head is hurting. Got to somehow get myself together and head to the Hobgoblin for Human Hair/Finally Punk/bunch of other stuff.

emil.y, Sunday, 28 June 2009 14:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Weird, I think I just saw Emil.y hanging around outside my window smoking a fag. Shoulda thrown some horns at you, except you wouldn't have had a clue who I was. Didn't know you were at Sussex, damn. How was Finally Punk?

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 2 July 2009 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

No worries Emily, we had a great time, but the sound system wasn't the greatest so it wasn't the best place to listen, or dance, to the music we were playing. Tom's has a pretty decent system though, so all steam ahead for the next one on the 1st of August!

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 2 July 2009 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Okay, make sure you bump the thread!

Finally Punk was awesome - I hadn't actually heard them before I went, but they were just really cool slightly messy pop of the highest order. Even the bands on the bill who I'd not been that impressed by before put on a great show, and an awesome time was had by all. Hooray!

Also, you totally should have thrown horns - it would have cracked me up. Which building were you in? I was outside a few different windows smoking fags today, trying to make sure I'd got stuff sorted for my dissertation meeting.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 July 2009 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I probably should have addressed the comments separately there, shouldn't I? Multiple use of 'you' is not very clear. I'll never make it in academia. Damn.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 July 2009 16:32 (fourteen years ago) link

damn you saw Finally Punk. did they do the song with the squeaky penguin? that was lined up for the next idiotica comp.

zappi, Thursday, 2 July 2009 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't think they did. I was pretty drunk, but I think I would have remembered something like that. Need to get hold of the album, but as we got there at 6 I'd spent all my money by the end so couldn't get it on the day.

Emil.y, I'm in the computer-y place yo! Was toying with the idea of the Finally Punk thing, but ran out of juice. Glad you had a good time.

And Matt, glad your thing went well too.

three weeks pass...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v418/Chewshabadoo/glockflyer1-8-2009.png

This is this weekend people and we have a guest DJ joining us this week for our Pride special: The Ig playing a selection of awesome rare weirdo disco gems and the odd curveball. Entry is free and we go from 10 until 4, although the bar upstairs will be open all day.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 13:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I will try to make it, but I'm getting into dissertation hibernation mode so can't promise, sadly.

Can any of you guys recommend second-hand instrument shops around here? I need to buy a keyboard amp, but as cheap as it can possibly be. I've been to the big guitar/amp/keyboard shop, and the one above the clothes shop on Sydney Street (I think). Probably the best thing will be to wait it out and look online at the small ads, but I could do with something as soon as possible.

emil.y, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 16:26 (fourteen years ago) link

this night sounds good. i wanna visit brighton again before summer's out (oh wait it is).

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Can't help I'm afraid Emily, haven't bought any second hand music gear for about 10 years. ebay/gumtree/friday-ads probabaly are your best bet.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 21:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Slight change of plans. The owner of Tom's appears to have lost her lease, so we are now going back to The White Rabbit pub in Kensington gardens with a slightly earlier start of 8pm.

More nice artwork Matt! Good luck!

Thanks, although I can't take credit for this one, the other half of Glock'n'Spiel, Rob, is also a graphic designer, and he made this one.

I'm going to kick things off at 8 this month with a couple of hours of more left-field electronic stuff, before zooming off into danceable territory with a special disco/acid/synth/ebm set from our from friend The Ig.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 11:34 (fourteen years ago) link

This time I designed the poster, for those who care! (^_^)

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 11:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Is that in the downstairs bit of Tom's, cleverly designed to resemble Joseph Fritzl's dungeon?

(Nice poster btw)

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 11:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Eh, I'll download that mix later.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 11:42 (fourteen years ago) link

The very same dungeon! Thanks.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:45 (fourteen years ago) link

So peoples, shall we move from South London to Brighton?

I've always loved the place I'm kinda firmly in Gareth's "people move there to 'escape' london, but they all escape to the same damn place taking the worst bits of london with them. all the bad of london concentrated in a small area, with none of the good bits." camp.

Argh...

Background Zombie (CharlieNo4), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 13:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I've no problem people moving to Brighton from London, as long as they chill the fuck out and cheer the fuck up! I'm sure you'll fit in fine, having met you before and remembering you seemed like a friendly chap.

two months pass...

ILXBrightoners - I'm looking for some parking advice (yes, this a thrilling question). We're heading down from London by car. I've learnt from repeated bitter experience that I can lose up to an hour in traffic jams crawling into town on the A23 and then queueing for a parking space on the fourteenth floor of a concrete car park, so what we normally do is go round to Falmer, then into town via Woodingdean and past the racecourse and park up in a side street off Queen's Park Road.

I don't really fancy this tomorrow because we're heading to Seven Dials, which is a bit of a walk from Queen's Park Road, with a pushchair, in the forecast pouring rain and gale force winds. If I headed into town on Dyke Road instead, how close could I get to Seven Dials before it's all permit-only parking? Brighton are playing at home tomorrow as well - does that affect things?

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 27 November 2009 16:57 (fourteen years ago) link

the streets will be blocked by weeping, prostrated brighton fans, having watched their team ship 23 goals at home

GET THAT BABY JESUS RIGHT UP YE (acoleuthic), Friday, 27 November 2009 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Kick off's not till 3pm, so even if the mighty Rushden & Diamonds do pull off such an unlikely victory, the weeping seasiders shouldn't trouble my lunchtime drive in.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 27 November 2009 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

haha oops

we're playing there NEXT week

damn

GET THAT BABY JESUS RIGHT UP YE (acoleuthic), Friday, 27 November 2009 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Got no idea about parking near Seven Dials, but if you really get stuck, you could head to the main station car park, which is only about 10 mins walk away from there. And yes, Dyke Road is a much better way in to town than the A23 afaik.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 27 November 2009 17:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Argh. My friend gave me some permits for around that area, as I live right in the centre of town where the waiting lists are ridiculous and there aren't any spaces anyway. But it's probably not going to be feasible to actually find a way to get them to you, is it? Hmmm. I'm not sure where free parking starts, so I can't be of help there. My only other suggestions would be to try the parking behind the station - should be £6 for a day, I think. Or... apparently another friend found some free parking near the Duke of York's picture house, which is on Preston Circus - much closer than where you usually park.

This thread has been pretty quiet of late - any Brightonians up to anything? Pre-ATP schedule for me is quiet weekend, with the Has films on Sunday, Six Organs of Admittance on Monday, and Box Elders on Wednesday.

emil.y, Friday, 27 November 2009 17:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't really know! Don't think it said anything to that effect in the last Resident update though, so you'll probably be alright.

Did you go to 6 Organs emil.y? I missed it cos I've been shut up at home with the lurgy. One I've been looking forward to for ages as well :(

Yeah, we went. And I'm sorry to say it, but it was brilliant. Hope you get well soon.
