i figure most of these people who are usually "gotta spend time w my family!" are maybe happy to see a familiar name pop up on their phone and step outside to talk for a while at this point. it's only going to get more ripe for phone calling! i love talking on the phone and i don't think i will ever stop loving it unless i lose my hearing. (god forbid)

an taoiseach addressed the nation there

- no lockdown beyond whats been done here already (schools closed, work from home where possible, bars shut, the same social distancing and avoidance as everywhere else)

- above measures were in place through 29th march, now indefinitely but through summer expected

- cases expected to go to 15000 here by end of month

- vulnerable will at some stage be asked to isolate at home, measures being put in place

- major recruitment and coordination drives in the healthcare, supply chain, food, transport, administration, communication sectors

- measures will be put in place for all citizens who may experience hardship

- told youngsters not to be giving cheek and to check with mammy if theres anything they can do to help once a day

- paraphrased churchill three time. classic trolling.

Welllllllllp. Confirmed case in my actual office. My open-plan, no fucken walls anywhere, people packed in practically shoulder-to-shoulder workspace. And now the fun begins!

kinder, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 21:54 (six years ago)

Thankfully as noted upthread, I've been on self-lockdown since Friday (except for a brief, no touching anything walk outside like half an hour before I got the news) and haven't touched anything outside our apartment door without a Clorox wipe in hand, and I feel fine thus far, but yeah...I'm not even gonna set foot outside my home for a long while.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 17 March 2020 21:56 (six years ago)

xp guilty laugh as I think of leaning over my coworker's cubicle wall and saying, "hey, my wife tested positive for that corona thing! pretty wild, huh? *sips coffee*

good way to get your coworkers to burn you at the stake

mh, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 21:56 (six years ago)

When we moved not all that long ago into our renovated semi-open office space (much lowered cubicle walls), someone asked about the easier transmission of illness. We were told we had plenty of sick time and should take it!

The alien brain slug was not long after I came to Australia. I get dust allergies but not hay fever and figure I was just sensitive to some Australian native polllens. Treated accordingly for a several months with Nasonex but it kept getting worse, lots of sinus headaches, which Sudafed would relive for a bit. Eventually I went to the doctor, and after a few rounds of different treatments for allergies and inflammations he sent me for an MRI.

You could quite clearly see that the whole right side sinus network was full of something. Diagnosed as a sinus polyp, which is a bag of fluid that develops in the sinus. Sometimes can be cancerous but rarely. Sent for surgery, knocked out and th ENT went up their with an endoscope and cleaned it all out. Biopsy clear and fine after a few days on codiene and a month of rinsing my nose with saline solution.

Only bummer was finding out it wasn’t covered by the Medicare/NHS reciprocal health agreement and i had the wrong insurance so had to pay for it.

Sorry that is not really corona related but VG asked. We don’t really have a threat for discussing the ailments brought on by creeping decrepitude. (Let me tell you about my feet and how they should be hacked off and replaced with robot ones)

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 17 March 2020 22:43 (six years ago)

Thanks Ed, was gonna ask as I have sinussy stuff at the moment right now. Have had a headache behind one eye for two days. I get dust allergies too.

Sort of spiraling into a panic mode tonight because I just keep hearing of and seeing people blatantly ignoring the social distancing and just blithely going on with the whole, "fuck you, I'm American and I'll do what I want" attitude. It's infuriating. The latest was my 73 year-old MIL who called us tonight from a night out with her friends playing cards.

I just feel like it doesn't matter that the rest of us are sacrificing since so many people just don't give a fuck. Like will it even matter that we're hunkered down at home? One of those nights.

I still don't know what kind of gatherings with friends are considered acceptable. as a rule I've just been staying in other than to buy groceries.

I have more issues with the "hey come on, I need some decompression time", like....I get everybody's need to step aside, but this isn't like someone taking 4 hours off of work to go get a massage, or someone taking a break from packing boxes for a move to go out to a club.

the virus does not care about your feelings. my FB feed was full of people who went to Disney in the days before it closed. intelligent, compassionate people who suddenly thought being around thousands of people was a good idea.

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 00:26 (six years ago)

For me, as a person with underlying health conditions, the uk directive is to “significantly limit your face-to-face interaction with friends and family if possible” and further down it says having friends or family over to the house is “strongly advised against”. That’s meant to go for 12 weeks.

Ordinarily I don't love having a car or driving it, but I did go for a drive with the kid today as a time-killing measure. It was nice. We can't do playgrounds or see his friends or go swimming or go to gymnastics, but the car is enclosed and there's stuff to look at.

the whole, "fuck you, I'm American and I'll do what I want" attitude.

it's everywhere and it can't be eradicated by a small thing like a pandemic. that's why authorities are doing all they can to limit the variety of selfish bad choices people can make, by closing down most of their options for rubbing elbows in public gathering places. let them go to the mall cinema as much as they like, but if the doors are locked it's kind of a hollow gesture of defiance.

I hung out in the Sam's Club tire shop tonight. They were playing Human League, which isn't so obscure.

pplains, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 03:25 (six years ago)

I'm putting clorox wipes, frooty pepples into the trunk, mind thinking about a thousand things, about 300 of 'em things I saw inside that Sam's Club.

"Hey!" says older woman suddenly next to me. "They handing out wipes at the door?"

"Huh? What? I don't know." Realized I was still holding on to one from ten minutes ago. "I got this one at the exit."

"Hey!"

Didn't realize she was still there. What time is it? "Yes m'aam?"

She points to my tire. "Your car's got a flat!"

And then she was gone.

hospital report, Oregon, 3/17/20:

no more elective surgeries
no surgeries using blood
no surgeries resulting in transfer to Assisted Living

an old friend of mine in Indiana just had a scary heart attack and was scheduled for open heart surgery. then they told him "well if you come in and get the virus you'll die, but if you stay home you probably won't die right away" and they postponed his surgery so now he is at home with them keeping a close remote eye on him

sleeve, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 04:47 (six years ago)

idk if it has been mentioned here but the blood banks are getting hammered as well

sleeve, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 04:48 (six years ago)

I don't think everybody in America realizes that hospitals being stretched aren't a thing in the distant future, these conversations and procedural changes are happening in multiple states *right now*.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend - hoping he pulls through when they're able to get to his surgery. that has to be terrifying for him.

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 04:53 (six years ago)

btw don't take my first sentence to be defending that ignorance, since every expert's been hammering on about this for weeks.

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 04:54 (six years ago)

no yr totally right, my wife just had an argument with her 86-year-old dad who thinks it's all a "hoax"

sleeve, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 04:58 (six years ago)

I feel like the theme parks leaving themselves open the rest of last week just encouraged a bunch of people to make a "last call" visit to the park. not that attendance necessarily spiked or anything, but a whole bunch of people I know went twice in the last few days it was open and when people said "hmm maybe not a good idea" the response was "well I needed this, it was going to be closed for a while!".

I still know people who literally think the heat will 'burn up' the virus. or taking enough Vitamin C will keep you from getting it. or that you can't spread it if you're not symptomatic (I have no idea why THAT is the one thing people can't get through their head...for all I know I have it!)

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 05:05 (six years ago)

My uncle is in dire need of a hip replacement, which is supposed to happen in 3 weeks, and he's worried it will be delayed. Another uncle had a bad cold, and I haven't been able to get a clear explanation from my aunt about what's happening with him. My dad seems to have lucked out, he's scheduled to get a stent tomorrow after 2 recent minor strokes, and it looks like it will actually happen.

Piled on to bully a CHUD game store owner who was crowing about it being a hoax and he was going to keep running events bringing in all the people (literally every) other stores were 'abandoning,' he caved when people screenshotted his shit and explained they'd be contacting the local media with it.

my 10 year old nephew came down with a high temperature and a cough last night. he's one of four kids, one of whom has downs syndrome. they live a five minute walk away from my mum and dad. they've all been seeing each other until my parents went into lockdown yesterday. troubling news.

ymo sumac (NickB), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 08:50 (six years ago)

he would be the only kid in the world to my knowledge with the virus who also displays symptoms. i think it's very very unlikely.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 09:09 (six years ago)

Coronavirus and kids:

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/coronavirus-kids-children-symptoms-research_l_5e701c39c5b63c3b64835739

Roughly 4% of the children had no symptoms at all and 51% had mild illness — meaning symptoms like fever, sore throat, coughing, sneezing or digestive issues.

Another 39% had what researchers considered moderate illness, including pneumonia, more frequent fever and cough, or wheezing.

ymo sumac (NickB), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 09:24 (six years ago)

whaa - that totally contradicts what I've heard

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 10:01 (six years ago)

guess we'll find out for sure sooner or later :(

ymo sumac (NickB), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 10:06 (six years ago)

Not all cases were confirmed through lab testing, and severe outcomes were more common in kids who were not specifically tested for COVID-19, which could be because their symptoms were caused by other pathogens.

hmmmm??

The study may also underestimate the number of children who are asymptomatic carriers, as it focused primarily on those who presented with symptoms, O’Leary said.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 10:08 (six years ago)

yeah kids w/o symptoms aren't being tested unless presumably they've been in overwhelming contact with a confirmed case

Clay, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 10:10 (six years ago)

but confirmed cases won't have been tested and confirmed until they've been in contact with a confirmed case
etc
