I have recently started playing with some bros, after one of them came fourth in his IT department's tournament at first attempt and talked us all into having a monthly game.

first up: came fourth out of five, no real idea what I was doing tbh. went and read a little afterwards to prepare for...

second game: chip leader for about half the game after pulling off some big wins early. then I got a run of totally useless hands which chipped away at my pile (we were playing antes rather than small/big blind). key moment: folded while on A-2-4-5 with one to come because it was getting way too pricey for me. should've backed myself in because guess what came on the river! and they were bluffing too. was out within three hands.

third game: useless, had mind on other things so probably subconsciously threw it. lucky it's only ten bucks to play.

About the dumbest move I've made recently was in a heads-up. The blinds were $4-$8, and I was the big blind. Other guy just called and pushed in his $4. I looked at my cards, saw an unsuited 5-2, and folded. Other dude shrugged his shoulders and took my eight dollars.

I can take a little comfort in the fact that he probably had a better two-card hand, but hell. I could've seen the flop for free and then folded. Or hell, it could've been something crazy like 3-4-6 or 2-5-2.

Dumb move. It was late.

it's gutting when something like this happens.. i think the poker software i use warns me about that (it says something like "DUDE IT'S FREE TO CHECK DO YOU WANNA?" without the dude bit)

I suspect it may have been live, Ken.

key moment: folded while on A-2-4-5 with one to come because it was getting way too pricey for me. should've backed myself in because guess what came on the river! and they were bluffing too.

You can't let yourself be results oriented, though. Unless you were getting 10:1 odds to call, you were well off out of the pot (and I'm sure you weren't if it was getting pricey). Your fold was good - you need to make sure you do the same next time, rather than remembering that the miracle card came last time and paying bad odds in order to see the river.

Guess what I saw on telly last night? A certain bearded lotherio winning $1.4m with rockets!

hey wher's my invite

ken c (ken c), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:11 (eighteen years ago) link

to your rakeback thing i mean

ken c (ken c), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Ken, I don't send you an invite as such. You go to their site, find the specific link, follow it, then email them and say you have joined and that you were referred by me - my username is Zerbombt and my membership no. is RTR04959.

If you want to join Party, you can also do it through raketherake though it's not rakeback as such, rather it's a sort of odd bonus thing that looks quite good. Or you can let me refer you, in which case I get $50.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:20 (eighteen years ago) link

im already on party i;m fraid!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:22 (eighteen years ago) link

(first ever one i joined! way back in 2002!)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 3 February 2006 12:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Heh!

So, who do you want to join? I can def recommend Interpoker - $100 bonus a month, a great freeroll tourney for new members (the one I won $200 in, above), and $, £ and € tables.

Ok Step 1 : Go http://www.raketherake.com/PokerInterpoker.html and follow the on screen instructions, basically you just need to click on their link which takes you to the interpoker site. This is important – you have to follow their link otherwise you will not be able to have rakeback added, so make sure you click the banner! There are no codes or anything to enter, it’s all automatic based on you clicking their banner.

Step 2 : Once you’ve set up your interpoker account and deposited some money (100% match up to $100 so deposit the full amount if you can), email newplayer@raketherake.com letting them know you have set up a new interpoker account from their link and give them your username and ask them to set up a new rakeback account. Tell them you want the rake paid directly in to your poker account. Don’t forget to say “I was referred by Mark Casarotto, RTR account number RTR04959”.

That's it!

At where else would a poker game be played outside of a casino?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 22:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Here's my bad news for the day:
I knew there would come a time where I would finally agree with my friends who think of Game Night as a lame poker party. I think I've just been in denial for a long time. ... After 20 something weeks of hosting the poker tournament I've had enough. Some poker players are consistently rude, inconsiderate, sloppy, and way too serious. Last night D____, a weekly staple at the poker table told me I couldn't cut the deck the way I did. M______ handed me the deck to cut and the top card had practically fallen off, so I just knocked it off the rest of the way. D____ in a very serious no no tone said I couldn't count the deck. D____ had stormed out the week before without saying goodbye so I told him that he couldn't do that and I got pissed off and remained pissed for the rest of the night ... I'm tired of people being impatient and sitting around wanting me to warp the rest of the poker bunch into the kitchen so we can begin. I'm tired of our kitchen smelling like a dirty ashtray. I do not like waiting around after everyone is gone 'til four am so the tournament can end. L_____ and I are both sick of finding beer caps in the garbage disposal. ...And I hate it when people storm out of the house. It's not worth it to me. That's why no one else hosts a weekly 10 to 16 player tournament. ... The poker players also seem to think that if they meet someone that happens to like poker, they should invite them to my house, give them directions, and hand out my phone number. My very good friends have made some very bad judgement calls lately ...I'm sorry if cancelling the poker tournament disappoints some of the friendly poker players whose company I enjoy (you know who you are). But I know you will understand because you know what I have to deal with. It had to end sooner or later.
Dude is completely OTM in his e-mail to all of us. In case anyone was curious, THAT'S how you kill a poker night.

So, I made about £200 this weekend, almost all grinding out £25 and $50NL. I might buy a camera with it. Yancey, David, Ken, Haitch, Chris, Pleasant Plains - updates y'all?

Crimea River (Mark C), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm hanging in there - been playing mostly ring tables ($.50 NL - OH YEAH HIGH ROLLING), & am still up overall, but got screwed by the poker gods this weekend. First hand I got sitting down at a table = AA. I raise 5x the blind, two people call. Flop is AQQ. Me = !!!! I check, some jerky bets $2, I (thinking I have this hand sewn up, & thinking Slappy is playing Ax) call. 3rd dood folds. Turn is a Q - no betting. River is crap. I end up getting reraised & going all in. Slappy had QJ offsuit. Then has the balls to tell me I shouldn't have slowplayed the nut full house. I kinda lost it then.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:09 (eighteen years ago) link

two months pass...
Up another £200 this week (god, why do I post this - I must curse myself). I am contemplating, once again, the move to $100NL - I am easily rolled for it but just don't have the balls. Though I did play 50 hands or so along with tonight's session, and finished $19 up on that table, which is better than a kick in the balls I guess.

The week's highlight was this. Snazzy, eh?

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 11 August 2006 23:04 (seventeen years ago) link

i should really read this thread through.. will later.

but, can anyone rec a good underground house in NYC? i used to really enjoy those, one on the ues and a couple on the west side. not that i bet much, mostly tournaments where you'd only blow $60-80 on the early rebuys. i've heard of some really loose games w/ drunk kids in williamsburg.

online just doesn't do it for me, i end up getting bored. haven't played in over a year, but was in a tournament last week that rekindled some interest.

mentalismé (sanskrit), Saturday, 12 August 2006 01:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Sanskrit - have you spoken to Yancey about it?

Louis - I got a £17 pot in the end - check/raised Phipps on the river and got a call. Not too shabby.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Saturday, 12 August 2006 10:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Not too shabby indeed!

FWIW, I'm hanging in there - up nearly 2 grand for the year, and won 6 bills @ Foxwoods a few weekends ago. Gonna head up there in a few hours again, actually (to give the money back, of course).

I am ALMOST to the point that I can stop relentlessly bitching about bad beats. Tho it's hard when I raise w/ QQ, catch trips, get 55 to go AI, and lose to a runner-runner straight.

Oh, and RAKEBACK! IS! AWESOME!

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Saturday, 12 August 2006 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I just have a weekly game with some friends which has been going on for about a year. Haven't ventured on to online poker yet as I am scared of losing all my money. I posted on this thread once before, I think.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Saturday, 12 August 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Is the site providing that breakdown for you, Mark? Or do you have some fancy tool @ yr disposal, like SharkScope.com?

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 12 August 2006 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

(x-post) Ah cool. Assuming you didn't lose your money, do you think you'd be interested in playing online? It can be quite a time sink but it's a great hobby, and I'm by no means great (and I play at very low levels) but I've now got about £2,800 I didn't have at the start of last year.

David - the stats are from Poker Tracker - it's an essential (I think) tool for keeping in touch with your stats and those of your opponents. I can't tell you how valuable it is to know that the guy to your left is playing 45% of hands and raising half of them, for example.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Saturday, 12 August 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I would be interested in theory (not right at the moment though, cash flow problems), though I think my most valuable asset in the game is that I have a pretty good poker face, which wouldn't be much good online. Also, I enjoy the socializing as much as the game itself. Might be fun to practice loads on the internet and trounce my friends, though.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Saturday, 12 August 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Hehe yeah, that would be good. Or we could just talk tactics - what kind of style do you use? Most live games tend to be too loose/passive, so tight/aggressive tends to pwn them.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Saturday, 12 August 2006 15:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Gah. Played 800 hands this afternoon and lost £30. That's not how it's supposed to happen. Made some brilliant reads, called all-ins ahead and lost on about 4 occasions. I did, however, luck out massively with this one. The guy I beat took it very well :)

Joe, you intrigued enough to give online a go yet? I'd be happy to discuss where you could play, what games and stakes etc. Some sites give free money to start; others give bonuses which you receive after playing a certain number of hands (and further bonuses as you continue playing). I've managed to rack up the best part of £800 in bonuses and rakeback alone, which comes on top of winnings (or mitigates losses :)).
