Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 14 February 2008 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

jergïns, Thursday, 14 February 2008 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

i'm gonna spend it in canada (thereby stimulating the economy north of the border instead of our), smuggle the stuff back into the states (avoiding paying duty on it, natch), then sell said items at a reasonable markup (and not charging sales tax or reporting the income).

THANKS FOR THE HANDOUT GWB!!!

chicago kevin, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

damn chi kev you have got it all planned out.

gr8080, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Can someone explain to non-American why you're all getting 600 dollars?

Tuomas, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

because our government loves us very much and wants us to be happy

dan m, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

x-post

To make up for the fact that we are on our way to becoming a second-world country (at least).

Also I'm not sure what I'll spend mine on. Perhaps a nice pair of shoes or laser hair removal. Or a trunk full of subwoofers.

Bonita Applebum, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

So the American government is giving everyone 600 $? In cash?

Tuomas, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

What's the story behind it?

Tuomas, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

Economy's in the toilet. Bush Administration figures if they give everyone $600, we'll all run out and spend it right away, thereby stimulating the economy.

jaymc, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

this thread is google result #2 for "six hundred dollars"

n/a, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

WHOOO AH!

n/a, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

tuomas, it is part of a very stupid plan to further delay a long-foreshadowed recession, despite the fact that said recession has already begun and will not blink twice in the face of a bunch of people spending $600 that we would normally have just paid to government in the form of income tax a year from now (and probably still will anyway).

El Tomboto, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

part of a very, very stupid plan

Fixed.

contenderizer, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, doesn't this just mean smaller returns next year?

Jordan, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

for those of us who aren't american

The stimulus law signed by President Bush on Wednesday provides what he called a "booster shot" to the economy, but the medicine might not be strong enough to ward off a recession.

The $168 billion package of personal tax rebates and business tax cuts will likely help shore up consumer spending later this year, economists say. That could minimize the pain of a possible downturn.

So they're all getting FREE MONEY in order to avoid, er, an economic downturn. Wait.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

THANK YOU AMERICAS

Mr. Que, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

as a guy who owns a store that sells luxury items that nobody needs to stupid people with almost no financial sense, i heartily approve of this stimulus package

John Justen, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

do i need 14 toms, and 2 bass drums y/n?

Mr. Que, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm amazed you don't break away from the crazy fundamentalist states and call yourself the Republic of Funkynesia or something.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

ha, you do, but not for $600.

i'm thinking of getting a nice crash cymbal, a cowbell + bass drum mount, and an extra cymbal stand. all the little things i've been missing from my jazz/new orleans kit.

Jordan, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

No, I mean in order to avoid being ruled by someone considerably less sociopathic.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

the problem is, AA, that THEY ARE EVERYWHERE

dan m, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

StanM, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

woah i should buy a drum set if i get all six hundred dollars but i'm married so maybe i get more

You will get $1200 but surely your wife gets a say in how half of that is spent.

Bonita Applebum, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

$1196 drum set + $4 ear plugs = 1 happy couple!

StanM, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

no, it's 168 billion less to spend on sustainable energy research, space programs, or basically any type of science you'd care to name. the war department will always have plenty of cash.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

dude, science is for nerrrrrrrrrrds

John Justen, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:29 (eighteen years ago)
