We need to get off this antagonistic tip with putative allies. It does nothing but balkanize, which does nothing but strengthen the legit villains.

Waifu-ed Around and Fell in Love (Old Lunch), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:34 (six years ago)

A lot of mainstream Democrats are legit villains to a lot of Sanders supporters

college bong rip guy (silby), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:35 (six years ago)

Speaking of legit villains, actual Nazis crashed the Sanders rally tonight.

that was an xp not to Nazis w/ Bernie

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:36 (six years ago)

xxxpost they are! lots of people are abusive cocks in general to lots of people, including Bernie, and it shouldn't be tolerated wherever it comes from.

and there are Bernie supporters who get bullied too! I mean, nobody is saying that Bernie's army is 50 million thugs holding baseball bats and honking horns outside of peoples houses for hours. the only point is "hey this is a thing that is happening and it feels like you're saying nuh uh it isn't happening or it is happening but who cares that it is happening".

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:37 (six years ago)

to be clear the "antagonism" I am referring to is things like friends or colleagues having their weight, appearance, disabilities, etc. mocked, or being DMed with racial slurs, all of which have happened

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:39 (six years ago)

I don’t care about who you’re voting for tbh but I’ve seen so much handwringing about civility and decorum take up needless space in this race as if policy and class aren’t driving forces at all and that this is all about “fans” or stan or “bro” culture rather than differences that mean fucking life and death for people. I’m definitely not saying people should strive to be jerks but it sucks to see the constant erasure of genuine ideological and demographic fault lines

I mostly agree with the spirit of this and at the same time am of the belief that there need to be spaces and times where sympathizers of the movement/candidate (i.e., people concerned with the driving forces of "policy and class") can discuss issues of rhetoric (it goes way beyond "civility and decorum" imo). A movement is defined not only by what it cares about but also how it communicates, and how it organizes itself. Effective movements include at least some people who are interested in these things, even while keeping an eye on the prize.

We need to get off this antagonistic tip with putative allies.

More than a few posters ITT consider themselves socialists a good bit to the left of Sanders - for better or worse, liberals and socialists are not putative allies. It's nothing but temporary convenience because of how fucked up our country is.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:40 (six years ago)

xps nah you definitely told more than one of us to fuck off but I love you anyway and am happy to take a bullet for latebloomer if necessary

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:41 (six years ago)

xp

Well if you're going to make even alliances of temporary convenience because of how fucked up our country is, constantly pissing on people who probably actually outnumber you is not going to help your cause. And if you're not going to help your cause, why bother going through any of the hassle of electoral politics?

You can be a revolutionary at home without having to worry about pledged delegates.

Nothing about ILX is going to help anyone's cause. You can't even find a freelance gig writing for an alt-weekly music section here anymore.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:45 (six years ago)

The sadness of which at least we can all agree on.

Well see though, kind of part of what I was trying to say is that our country is so fucked up that many of us are incapable of even seeing liberals and socialists as putative allies, i.e. people who may wildly disagree on a number of issues but who can still compromise and find areas of agreement and who, if they aren't more consumed with the self-righteous thrill of screaming in each other's faces, could take the time to see one another as people and learn from one another and collectively help forestall the rise of actual fascists and nazis and hate mongers.

Waifu-ed Around and Fell in Love (Old Lunch), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:55 (six years ago)

Of course I'm all in favor of unity but I'm saying this stuff shouldn't be a surprise or even looked upon as harmful in a forum that doesn't matter like this. This isn't a socialist and a liberal screaming in public, undermining each other.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 04:59 (six years ago)

many of us are incapable of even seeing liberals and socialists as putative allies

tbf the former killed Rosa

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 6 March 2020 05:00 (six years ago)

And hopefully one day we can return the favor

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 05:01 (six years ago)

And just ftr, disagreement (vehement and otherwise) is healthy af and necessary. I just see the delivery of disagreement becoming more and more of a rhetorical punch in the teeth and I can't help but wonder what purpose that tack serves beyond self-satisfaction among whichever faction is delivering the blow at that particular moment.

Waifu-ed Around and Fell in Love (Old Lunch), Friday, 6 March 2020 05:02 (six years ago)

Berniebros return the favor every day, by a thousand cuts. xp

― sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Friday, March 6, 2020 4:46 AM (three minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

It’s ok. To be fair I haven’t been out as transgender on ILX all that long and I don’t post here as frequently as I used to so it’s easy to forget. Just have to remind people occasionally.

I do admittedly get a bit triggered sometimes when it feels as if someone might be lumping my angrier posts with “bro” alike, because it really does not come from that kind of place at all. My coming out as trans IRL cost me two longtime friendships (they were emphatically not cool with it) and that has kinda fucked up my ability to trust people. The heightened political climate only makes this worse and I tend to veer into paranoia and suspicion more than I ever did before. It’s something I need to work on.

Ok bloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 6 March 2020 05:18 (six years ago)

Damn, Latebloomer, you are perennial cool af. I'm sorry your ex-friends don't recognize that.

latebloomer I feel thankful for your post and can’t articulate why

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Friday, 6 March 2020 05:31 (six years ago)

Ty all

This stuff is so intimately tied in with my financial precarity and health problems and I feel that the immediacy of these material issues is all-too-often glossed over in political discussion and that contributes to the anger and resentment many people feel

whatever ceiling exists for sanders has very little to do with extremely online shit like "mean bernie bros" and more about the perception the media has pushed that he's too risky in the general election compared to biden which appears to be the main factor behind biden's surge.

My primary concern is that Bernie will stick to the issues and not go for the jugular re Biden's electability

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 6 March 2020 11:32 (six years ago)

He's hitting him on trade/the rust belt, seems like the biggest electability concern he can go after since cognitive decline is off the table.
