I had a libertarian phase for a few months when I was 18 too. Unfortunately, the 1997 Canadian election occurred during those months. I voted PC for the only time in my life. (Tbf, they were basically a fringe party at that point.)

I used to see an old man all the time driving a minivan that was covered top to bottom in Ron Paul stickers and quotes, I hope he moved out to a compound somewhere to live out his dream and didn't die.

i'm not basing this on anything other than my feeeelings but i figured most paul guys--besides maybe some of the younger ones without fully formed brainz yet--went full on alt-right

The personalities may change but the cult mentality remains.

My 75-yr-old Warren-supporting dad reax to the day's news: "This dismal situation frees me from having to think about the primary, as I can't vote of either of these boneheads. But I guess I'll be voting for one of them in the general."

i'm sorry but i just can't support elsevier's rent-seeking any more

Silver lining on today is that I can finally tweet this truly epic shot of Warren staff reacting to Jacob Wohl claiming our boss was having a BDSM affair with a young marine. #GoCougars pic.twitter.com/LcmB1eSnFj

They laugh, but Jacob Wohl is president and she is not.

Magnificent

Exclusive: For Bernie Sanders, his 1988 trip to the Soviet Union was an effort to build diplomatic ties. For the Soviets, it was the start of a years-long propaganda effort to exploit his antiwar agenda, documents obtained by The New York Times show. https://t.co/I4UsqheKHQ

Not many years, for obvious reasons.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:19 (six years ago)

Seriously, more like “months”

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:23 (six years ago)

You know who else visited the Soviet Union? Lee Harvey Oswald!

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:25 (six years ago)

is there a rollup of polls of the remaining primary states that compare Sanders and Biden's standings? 538's is tedious and you have to pick state by state and it still has the super tuesday states chooseable which is a pain; but my quick check showed Sanders ahead everywhere (sometimes by huge margins) but Florida and somewhere else.

akm, Friday, 6 March 2020 02:28 (six years ago)

Liz live on Maddow going on at great length about online abuse, way more than any other issue. Laying into Bernie supporters.

Bad blood. Does not sound conciliatory.

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:31 (six years ago)

sigh

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:32 (six years ago)

Quelle surprise

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:32 (six years ago)

Sounds like Biden making appeal for “decency” and “restoring dignity.”

I guess the rest of her principles are secondary.

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:33 (six years ago)

Seriously fuck her if she’s going to let a bunch of twitter trolls take priority over the issues she’s been campaigning on for the past year+

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:35 (six years ago)

Thats the spirit

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:38 (six years ago)

Christ almighty you guys are just never gonna get it, are you?

There's a reason literally everyone else across the spectrum thinks Bernie ppl are assholes. #notallbros I know, but for real. You can't take every single complaint and plea for decency as just more evidence of your righteousness.

It may or may not keep you from getting the nomination, but it's intensely alienating and yes there are a whole lot more people in this country than just you.

Michigan is Tuesday.

There is not a lot of time to right this ship if indeed you care about M4A, gross income inequality, climate catastrophe etc.

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:42 (six years ago)

But Berniebros are mean, so whatever

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:43 (six years ago)

I'm watching the Maddow interview now, she sounds fine

Tipsy, I admired your post today on FB. You should post here.

It’s a snake emoji on Twitter, no one burned down a house.

Joe Biden did make it all but impossible to clear student loans via bankruptcy, though.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:46 (six years ago)

Oh, thanks Alfred. Here it is.

Throwback Thursday, Liz Warren edition: In 2017 I went with my then-boss Madeline Rogero and a group of other mayors for meetings on Capitol Hill. The most impressive person of any party we met with was Elizabeth Warren. She came into the room, gave everyone there (me included) a very firm handshake and direct eye contact, then sat down and launched into a rapid-fire strategy session on how mayors could effectively advocate for urban interests under a federal administration that was not on the whole inclined to prioritize them.

She was forceful and direct and specific, and she asked smart questions and listened to the answers and responded to them. She was in the room for only about 15 minutes, but by the time she left she had every mayor there fired up and ready to go. I've met lots and lots of politicians, including several senators and governors, and I've never been so immediately impressed by anyone on just a basic level of intelligence, energy and strategic thinking.

Obviously that didn't translate on the presidential campaign trail, and there are a zillion thinkpieces out there about why not. But it was fun to be in that room.

This line of argument is basically, "The world sucks and is full of bad people, so you shouldn't care that we're assholes." But the thing is, nobody ever likes assholes. You could be on the Titanic sinking, and you'd still notice who was being an asshole.

I'm just not sure how many votes you really wanna throw away in the next month or so.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:50 (six years ago)

If this is her primary focus in her first post-dropout interview I'm just gonna go ahead and assume there ain't no endorsement on the way.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:51 (six years ago)

um we *are* on the Titanic sinking and we need all hands on deck. Now.

seems a safe bet. i truly hope she gets something good out of a biden admin, but... that seems unlikely.

your definition of "literally everyone else" seems maybe a bit limited

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:52 (six years ago)

I’ve never used an emoji in my life and never said an unkind word about Warren to anyone who could be influenced (ie not ILXors).

But it’s a snake emoji, if that’s someone’s threshold for voting for a guy who helped lead us into Iraq and brags about writing the PATRIOT Act, that’s between them and their god - and they were never serious about not voting for him.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:54 (six years ago)

xp who knows, maybe she’ll endorse tomorrow, but one would think you’d first want to calm the waters, prepare her supporters etc.

This was not that.

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:54 (six years ago)

she seems to be doing so right now #snake

like, I also can't stand the subset of irony-poisoned, extremely online dudes (and this particular subset is largely dudes) whose moral first principles, from which all other principles follow, are getting to dunk on people they find cringe or whatever, but nobody I have talked to who is not also extremely online has even heard of them

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 6 March 2020 02:59 (six years ago)

When I spoke with @ewarren earlier today, she was defiant at the idea that she is obligated to support either Sanders or Biden.

"Why would I owe anybody an endorsement?" she said. "Is that a question they asked everybody else who dropped out of this race?"

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 03:07 (six years ago)

um we *are* on the Titanic sinking and we need all hands on deck. Now.

That not only doesn't make it ok to be an asshole, it makes it actively counterproductive.

And it's not just extremely online dudes, or if it is, they're extremely prolific. I mean, I know lots of people who are not going to vote for Bernie partly because of how much they hate the cloud of jerks around him. Or if they are, it's with huge reservations, for the same reason.

But sure, it's all going to be everybody else's fault if he loses.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 March 2020 03:08 (six years ago)

Yes, it will be the fault of people who vote for Joe Biden because of "jerks."

the toxic abusers Bernie has specifically denounced repeatedly? xp

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 6 March 2020 03:14 (six years ago)

(ftr I think it's pretty dumb to change your vote based on something the candidate's supporters do or say, particular if the supporter came out against it multiple times, but still, coming at Warren for bringing it up is weaksauce)
