I flirted with libertarianism when I stopped being a trotskyist at 18 or 19 but I read one book - some Robert Nozick thing - and that was the end of that for me.

I suppose being a trotskyist for a couple of years in my teens is my dark reactionary secret past

frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:07 (six years ago)

I played the Clinton role in a class debate/election and stomped the shit out of the Perot/Bush kids.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:08 (six years ago)

I try to give women during that time some leeway in the choices they made because it wasn't the same circumstances.

This is absolutely fair and a good point

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:08 (six years ago)

Probably more indefensible than a libertarian phase, to be honest.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:08 (six years ago)

also true. and as for an actual “phase” I think it was really just a brief time when my conception of politics was something along the lines of hating the religious right, the PMRC and liking weed and seeing govt being a “problem” in all three instances

then W happened and well...

Amen and of course the fact that so many Sanders backers don't feel this way is part of their failure to connect beyond the progressive base.

I had a teacher who pushed the Ayn Rand scholarship essay contest super hard but thankfully she couldn’t actually make us read the Fpuntainhead or enter.

Lol Oh totally. I can’t get down w his music but I would have absolutely thought he should be president at one point in my dumb teenage life. If he hadn’t passed obv.

Several friends have posted a list of WHAT YOU’RE REALLY VOTING FOR where one of the top 5 is about the dignity of Presidential tweets. If that’s seriously a concern for a lot of people I will forever accept being out of touch with the electorate. (I don’t think it is.)

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:18 (six years ago)

I tried to read the Fountainhead when I was 13 or 14 because of Rush, but thanks Ayn Rand for being a horrible, ponderous writer! I got bored a little ways in and never went back

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:20 (six years ago)

yeah a friend of mine tried to get me to read the speech from anthem in high school and i was just like dogg this is boring

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:21 (six years ago)

I've said this many times before but it's baffling that Trump's RUDE TWEETS are still an angle of attack on the left, if anything the fact that Trump is a dumbfuck on Twitter is one of the only likeable things about him

frogbs, Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:21 (six years ago)

i fancied myself a moderate in high school but college turned me into a communist, which is one more for the conservative talking points about institutions of higher education. libertarians always came off as smug trolls to me, and they still do

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:22 (six years ago)

oh so this is why you're constantly posting trump tweets that i don't fucking want to see

the bloom fell off the rose for me when it became apparent that most were really just neo-Confederates who liked weed and South Park, eg Rand Paul-type dudes

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:27 (six years ago)

(This all happened way before the Paul’s had any national notoriety tho)

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:28 (six years ago)

libertarianism is a lot more appealing when you live with your parents

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:31 (six years ago)

Or when your parents buy you a house.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:46 (six years ago)

or when your house is a very very very fine house

He overperformed by more in 2016, iirc. But yeah, he'll need to do that again, or it's probably over.

538 still not updating their forecast is kinda stressful right now :(

Frederik B, Friday, 6 March 2020 00:05 (six years ago)

i don't think the biden momentum will last. he was buoyed by the last minute endorsements and the south carolina win -- which was always expected -- but the more scrutiny he gets, the less america will like him. also bernie's turnout will be higher in future contests because i think some supporters were feeling complacent.

source: wishful thinking

treeship., Friday, 6 March 2020 00:13 (six years ago)

i will say that it's bleak that biden is the "moderate" who actually emerged at the end of all that. almost all the others were more compelling. i'm a bernie guy so i never really liked them either, but like, at least klobuchar could make a coherent point at the debate. you know, responding to what others said meaningfully, using evidence...

treeship., Friday, 6 March 2020 00:15 (six years ago)

Still text-banking but it feels like there are a lot of liberals who've started actively convincing themselves that Biden's record isn't real.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:23 (six years ago)

honest to god who the fuck is voting for Tulsi?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:26 (six years ago)

some people have a crush on her i think. you know, she's from hawaii, she surfs, she takes unpopular stances in congress, i get it.

treeship., Friday, 6 March 2020 00:27 (six years ago)

people who voted for Ron Paul in 2008 or 2012

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:28 (six years ago)

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:28 (six years ago)

i think that's half of that one percent. the other half are people are very anti-war and for whom that is their main issue.

treeship., Friday, 6 March 2020 00:28 (six years ago)

Bernie could knee cap her by swearing that Medicare For All will cover essential oils

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:29 (six years ago)

the number of 08 Ron Paul dudes I know who became Bernie bros is a real headscratcher

Paulheads split along the lines of continuing to love weed/hate The Man or fully embraced fascism IME

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:31 (six years ago)

i don't know. i think these are people who distrust the concentrated power of the elites. and they are open to different ways of trying to break the back of this alliance between state and corporate power.

treeship., Friday, 6 March 2020 00:31 (six years ago)

I had a libertarian phase for a few months when I was 18 too. Unfortunately, the 1997 Canadian election occurred during those months. I voted PC for the only time in my life. (Tbf, they were basically a fringe party at that point.)

Sund4r, Friday, 6 March 2020 00:34 (six years ago)

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:35 (six years ago)

I used to see an old man all the time driving a minivan that was covered top to bottom in Ron Paul stickers and quotes, I hope he moved out to a compound somewhere to live out his dream and didn't die.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 6 March 2020 00:36 (six years ago)

i'm not basing this on anything other than my feeeelings but i figured most paul guys--besides maybe some of the younger ones without fully formed brainz yet--went full on alt-right

My 75-yr-old Warren-supporting dad reax to the day's news: "This dismal situation frees me from having to think about the primary, as I can't vote of either of these boneheads. But I guess I'll be voting for one of them in the general."
