1. We get that dna tests don't qualify one for tribal status

2. Warren never claimed or sought tribal status

3. Lots of male candidates get WAY more slack for significantly more severe gaffes (let's talk about e.g. Joseph R. Biden-Kinnock-Citibank for a sec plz.)

4. She's not running anymore so the point of this retroactive outrage is...?

As long as dems keep sniping at one another through November, I'm happy.

Because it was an accident waiting to happen. It was a catastrophic error of judgement. Bernie fans aren’t the only ones being selectively blind itt. Don’t try the misogyny argument on me; I don’t like Biden at all and Warren is a politician significantly more in line with my own views.

median punt (gyac), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:14 (six years ago)

I like Warren, too. Was planning to vote for her until her chances started to take a precipitous drop. Guess it's a write-in for Bloomberg after all!

Waifu-ed Around and Fell in Love (Old Lunch), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:14 (six years ago)

I voted for her on Tuesday during Florida early voting. It doesn't matter except for her using delegates as chips.

BTW, I know it is our duty and we will hold our noses and do it because we must, but man is there ever gonna be some head-spinning cognitive dissonance in voting for Sanders/Warren in the primary and then (presumably) Biden in the general.

Waifu-ed Around and Fell in Love (Old Lunch), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:16 (six years ago)

eh not really (not for me anyway)

if gyac is irish does that mean deems is allowed in this thread again?

Yerac, Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:18 (six years ago)

gyac, well, I guess it's a good thing that you don't have to choose whether or not to vote for or against someone that, afaict, you are not eligible to for or against. Whew! Bullet dodged. No harm no foul I guess?

"Yeah usually it's more like 3:22." -John Cage's wife (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:18 (six years ago)

That’s a weird argument when voting all but twice in my life has been a nose-holding exercise and my choice is basically always “the morons over the fascists”.

median punt (gyac), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:20 (six years ago)

I mean yes, of course, you take what you're given, getting Trump out of office is of paramount concern, but also to see a couple of progressive candidates get thaaaat close, to vote for them and have a legit hope of them going the distance, only to have to settle for ol' Camaro Joe. It's a little deflating.

smh at all the focus on warren for "taking Bernie's votes" etc. which is obv dumb but white people claiming native heritage sucks shit and is part of white supremacy and colonialism.

college bong rip guy (silby), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:23 (six years ago)

My prediction is that it's going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy that bumps her out; because everyone is saying that she can't win, fewer people will vote for her, making it more likely she won't win anything; if she ends up behind people who dropped out but have already garnered early votes (or just behind Bloomberg), I expect her to end her campaign.

Are all of you also up in arms over virtually every African-American (including myself) having a wives' tale in their family history about a Native-American great-great-grandmother?

I think you can guess how that's different.

frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:26 (six years ago)

but white people claiming native heritage sucks shit and is part of white supremacy and colonialism.

It is, but it's something that a HUGE chunk of white people I know had some dalliance with when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s. Self included. Until my dad went and did our genealogy (the hard way - pre-internet), it was family lore that we might have had Cree ancestry and I accepted that as fact. So many friends were "part Cherokee".

☮️ (peace, man), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:27 (six years ago)

Two of my grandparents were from Norman and we had similar family lore of Choctaw heritage so I get that it the kind of family story that gets passed down but it always seemed like obvious bullshit to me, which is why I wish she would have used the results to educate people on that.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:28 (six years ago)

The whole thing is leaving me kind of confused about what a white-passing person is supposed to do or say or how to say it, if they know or believe that they have a native/indigenous ancestor but their family either doesn't qualify as or didn't raise them with a tribal identity, but then since I'm not one of those ppl I don't really need to have an analysis right this second. Anyway. Go Liz and keep kneecapping bankers and oligarchs with our blessing.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:28 (six years ago)

I have non-white ancestry. I had ancestors that were indigenous people living in what is now called Chile. I also have ashkenazi jewish ancestors. I am a white person, I identify as white, I cannot not-pass as white

frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 5 March 2020 20:30 (six years ago)

FTR, the only reason Warren's DNA episode made me cringe was that (figuratively speaking) a bully called her a name and she responded with a powerpoint explaining why the bully was wrong. Which is basically the equivalent of handing a bully the back of your undershorts and pointing to the nearest coathook. This did not give me great confidence in her ability to fend off the bully she would have been running against had she won the nomination.

coulda just done this from the beginning and skipped the whole "setting $500 million on fire" thing

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is planning to launch a new multi-state effort to support the eventual winner of the Democratic primary after suspending his own campaign.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Bloomberg is planning an organization targeting six states: Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Arizona and Pennsylvania, that would both attack President Trump on key issues while supporting the Democratic nominee for president.

News of Bloomberg's plans comes following the suspension of his presidential bid on Wednesday following poor performances in Super Tuesday states, and the former mayor's endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden (D).

The new organization, while reportedly consolidating hundreds of campaign staffers across battleground states, will also serve as a vessel for the millions of dollars Bloomberg planned to spend on his own campaign for president, which will now work to serve the winner of the Democratic primary.

I had the opposite experience from Warren, in that my family never talked about any native american heritage but a few years ago I went on ancestry and found census forms that listed two of my great grandparents as members of Canadian tribes. A family secret, I guess. I kinda forgot about it right away.

The fact that Warren was touting herself, or allowing herself to be touted as a POC back when she was a conservative trying to dismantle the liberal curriculum at Penn law and then moving to Harvard whee Derrick Bell was refusing to teach until more minority faculty members were hired is kind of...odd?

p much where I ended up on it. I still allow for and believe a legitimate evolution on this stuff (hey I was a college “libertarian”) and I still wish she was going to be my president. but yeah.

xpost I don't know, the 70s and 80s were a weird time. I was born in the late 70s and always had assumed and lived like I had the same rights as men. I didn't realize until much later that the rights and protections were either very very recently given (like being able to get a credit card or loan without a male figure's signature) or I really didn't fully have them yet. I try to give women during that time some leeway in the choices they made because it wasn't the same circumstances.

Yerac, Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:01 (six years ago)

I was a libertarian as a 14 year old for about 2 hours

college bong rip guy (silby), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:03 (six years ago)

I flirted with libertarianism when I stopped being a trotskyist at 18 or 19 but I read one book - some Robert Nozick thing - and that was the end of that for me.

I suppose being a trotskyist for a couple of years in my teens is my dark reactionary secret past

Probably more indefensible than a libertarian phase, to be honest.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 21:08 (six years ago)

also true. and as for an actual “phase” I think it was really just a brief time when my conception of politics was something along the lines of hating the religious right, the PMRC and liking weed and seeing govt being a “problem” in all three instances

then W happened and well...

Amen and of course the fact that so many Sanders backers don't feel this way is part of their failure to connect beyond the progressive base.
