I don’t know that Biden is experiencing cognitive decline—I forget and flub words all time—but my guess is the media will start taking that question seriously if he becomes the nominee and Trump does this. There will be Gupta specials and panels with neurologists daily.

BTW I don't think Warren's out because the media erased her or mean bros on Twitter insulted her or whatevs, I just think I live in a country where most people don't want the things I want in their leaders, and I'm committed to democracy and that means I just gotta be OK with that.

I was at a Biden meet-and-greet for Hillary in 2015, and he called himself a “portable gaffe machine,” except he said “machine” as “machurn.” I thought the mispronunciation was a joke (it wasn’t) and I sympathetically chuckled, and one of Biden’s minders shushed me. His dotage ain’t nothing new.

yeah, warren deserved a lot better. maybe biden or bernie will be smart and use some of her plans. same as it ever was. OH WELL.

i think this is right. depending on where you stand, i suppose that's an indictment on either bernie and his message, or on democratic primary voters who have been leaning toward biden/klob/pete etc. but if he can't convince everyone that he's the right choice when facing only joe fucking biden, then he was never going to get masses of americans to finally overwhelm their corporate-sponsored political leaders and get a progressive agenda through congress.

In my experience in the Midwest, what happens is that people absorb anti-Semitic stereotypes as stereotypes about "people from New York" and literally don't know they are talking about Jews.

What a surprise:

Former Vice President Joe Biden has amassed a staggering 49-point lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in Florida ahead of the state’s March 17 Democratic presidential primary, according to a survey released on Thursday by St. Pete Polls.

The poll shows Biden leading the pack of candidates with about 61 percent support in the Sunshine State. His nearest rival in the poll, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, registered at 13.5 percent. Bloomberg ended his campaign on Wednesday after a poor showing on Super Tuesday and has since endorsed Biden.

Sanders notched only 12 percent in the poll, just about on par with the 13 percent he scored in a similar St. Pete Polls survey released last week.

The St. Pete Polls survey released last week showed him with more than 19 percent support among Hispanic voters in the Sunshine State. The poll released on Thursday, however, shows that support dropping to single digits at 8.5 percent.

That drop may reflect the backlash to comments Sanders made last month praising the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro’s investments in health care and education during his reign. Those remarks are seen as particularly taboo in Florida, where hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees fled to following the revolution that put Castro in power.

In another worrisome sign for Sanders, the poll shows him with only about 13.5 percent support among voters between the ages of 18 and 29 in Florida. In many other parts of the country, the Vermont senator leads among those voters.

Warren was the only one adopting the best plans from other candidates this election. Gov. Inslee's climate plan. Sen Gillibrad's paternal-leave plan, Kamala Harris's reproductive health care plan. Julián Castro's affordable health care plan.

I rode into her camp with Inslee's climate plan, which remains the best. But I don't expect her plans to influence the rest of the campaign.

Still think Warren would have made the best president of any candidate in the last two electoral cycles. But this cycle was one driven by fear rather than aspiration. The risk of a 7/2 conservative supreme court (and similarly obstructive lower federal judiciary) is too high a cost for not doing everything to win. We'll rely on familiarity (and for some groups, trust), and do our best to ignore the senility.

the nyt "warren is out" article reads like an obituary, and was probably ready weeks ago

I'm vaguely annoyed about how much of the coverage was like "it seemed like she was gonna win and then it all slipped away" -- there was a period of maybe a single month where it seemed like she had a real chance, but I never thought she was the most likely nominee and neither did any of the other supporters I know, and for 90% of the length of this primary it's clearly been a remote chance.

even now, i still believe that bernie is going to win. i'm waiting for my vote by mail ballot to arrive, and i can't wait to actually register my vote in a case where it actually matters

xp: Warren could have dominated the middle lane. I think her major mistake was a nuanced embrace of M4A rather than public option in November. She was never going to peel off voters from Sander's messianism. And it cost her half her support to Buttigieg and Klobuchar.
