Wild day, mostly viewed through Facebook, ilx, and group chats w friends who have been and remain Bernie skeptical. I wonder if the Bernouts would be caping for Biden and his surrogates if Warren was a strong front runner going into Super Tuesday and Joe caught up to her in the same fashion, all while Sanders came in third in his own state?

Maybe psychos on Twitter? Who knows, idgaf. But speaking personally? No. I’d be back to full-on Liz lad. Because policy matters. And the guy who will 1000% put SS on the chopping block if he thinks it will get him a photo op and prove he’s the guy who Made Republicans ‘Normal’ Again is a Bad Choice, regardless of who endorses him at this point.

Starting to think this wasn’t ever really about “No Old White Guys Pls”

Bernie rude tho

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 05:46 (six years ago)

protestors were criticizing Obama-era deportations and asked Biden to say he’d end all deportations — which he rejected

This is hardly a surprise to anyone reading this thread. Not sure what level of additional outrage is being requested here. The dilemma isn't whether to support Biden during the nomination process. It only arises if he gets the nomination. Thank god that won't arise for months, yet. His lead is hardly insurmountable.

i don't think that i can take it
cos it took so long to make it
and i'll never have the delegates again

That was in response to the idea that saying a Representative who endorsed Biden didn't share Bernie's politics was a sign he would be incapable of governing.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 5 March 2020 06:00 (six years ago)

an idea about saying what about whom?

Good Biden impression, spot on

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Thursday, 5 March 2020 06:14 (six years ago)

In that brief window Post-Nevada should Bernie have struck while the iron was hot and posited himeself as the unity candidate? Got some establishment endorsements of his own (other than Bill de Blasio)?.

The camp seems to have underestimated Biden's South Carolina bump - which everyone knew was coming, but maybe the thinking was SC was too close to Super Tuesday to have a significant effect?

anvil, Thursday, 5 March 2020 06:54 (six years ago)

She voted for Reagan twice and HW Bush, it's not like she cast a ballot for Fightin Bob LaFollette. Republicans were already deeply into their horrible sociopath phase.

Just to flog this horse a bit more, I'd be shocked if Bernie had voted for Carter, Dukakis, and Mondale. And it'd be crazy to criticize him for his votes for President 30-40 years ago.

symsymsym, Thursday, 5 March 2020 08:16 (six years ago)

Can the momentum in the Democratic race shift again?

Well, yes, obviously!!

But:

1) Biden's delegate lead may be nontrivial depending on where we end up in CA
2) In the short term, Biden will probably *gain* further ground in polls as a result of last night

Still hoping for a comeback in Michigan. Sanders did it before! But if not, then the progressive movement has squandered the best possibility they'll ever have for the presidency... And honestly, Sanders will have to take his share of the blame in order to learn from it so it never happens again.

Frederik B, Thursday, 5 March 2020 08:30 (six years ago)

wiki says bernie issued a "lukewarm" endorsement of mondale, at least

symsymsym, Thursday, 5 March 2020 09:05 (six years ago)

Sanders told The Gadfly that endorsing the Democratic ticket in 1984 and "campaigning for Mondale [...] was a very difficult thing to do."

"When I'd go around talking about Walter Mondale I would say that if elected president, I felt, Walter Mondale was going to be a pretty bad president," explained Sanders. "Now sometimes you may have to make painful decisions."

"If you go around saying that Mondale would be a great president, you would be a liar and a hypocrite," concluded Sanders. "That is not what I was saying."

Virginia:

In Virginia, exit polls show that Mr. Biden dominated across gender, race and educational lines. He had support from men and women, white and black people, college graduates and non-graduates alike by double-digit margins over Mr. Sanders. In fact, in most of the demographic categories that Mr. Biden won, his share of the vote was larger than Mr. Sanders’s and Ms. Warren’s combined.

Even more significantly, Mr. Biden made major inroads among Mr. Sanders’s core constituencies. For instance, Hispanic voters — who went overwhelmingly for Mr. Sanders in the Nevada caucuses — actually went for Mr. Biden by about 13 percentage points in the Virginia primary. And even among voters who described themselves as very liberal, Mr. Sanders won by only about 4 percentage points.

The only major demographic group that Mr. Sanders won in Virginia was young voters.

I think it’s fun that people think Bernie’s 40-year-old political affiliations will be more harmful than Biden’s much more recent positions and votes.

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Thursday, 5 March 2020 12:37 (six years ago)

Sort of doubt anyone on here is voting for Biden in the primary

I suspect no one here is even... Biden-curious

I was working as a waitress in an oxygen bar (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 5 March 2020 12:47 (six years ago)

I agree with milo that it seems like a fourth disingenuous thing for people to act like it is Sanders who has a "fuck all y'all" attitude bc he said "I respect him but his politics aren't mine" about someone who just endorsed his opponent (and possibly tried to smear him as racist) when it is Biden who repeatedly does things like this:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/29/joe-biden-go-vote-for-someone-else

Sund4r, Thursday, 5 March 2020 12:54 (six years ago)

Gah, who the fuck cares. Anyone that doesn't vote for Biden because of his record, or doesn't vote for Sanders because of his record, let alone their bad attitudes or sour grapes, is being ridiculous, because both of their records are miles better than the current default asshole, and no matter what, one of the three is probably going to be the next president no matter how much people grouse. But it seems fair to say that the wing most likely to sit this one out out of spite is young voters who supported Sanders, but if that wing were reliable voters there wouldn't be so much grousing going on right now in the first place.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 March 2020 13:00 (six years ago)

(and possibly tried to smear him as racist)

Uh, yeah, let's just drop this idea right here and now, because otherwise we might just drop this whole project

Frederik B, Thursday, 5 March 2020 13:12 (six years ago)

I don’t know that Biden is experiencing cognitive decline—I forget and flub words all time—but my guess is the media will start taking that question seriously if he becomes the nominee and Trump does this. There will be Gupta specials and panels with neurologists daily. https://t.co/lk60rp4bPl

— Every Billionaire Is A Policy Failure (@DanRiffle) March 5, 2020

this of course ignores the fact that trump’s brain is melted Swiss cheese, but what hope do we have if our candidate doesn’t have the “my brain works properly” advantage

someone do a Bernie v Biden poll.

i’m thinking the Results May Surprise You

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Thursday, 5 March 2020 13:27 (six years ago)

I read some people saying a lot of the weird coverage Sanders gets for being “shouty” or “pushy” leans on antisemitic tropes. Not an expert on this, is there any truth to this? I know how brain worms are in play re coverage with any leftist candidate, but honestly it all applies to Biden so much more!

blue checks on here gonna say that "mean tweets" did Sanders in. Biden called someone at his town hall fat and a damn liar and poked a steyer voter in the chest. he also told a member of Movimiento Cosecha to "go vote for Trump" for confronting him on immigration. in person.

Yeah, Biden has gotten real shouty in his dotage. I don't think the label applies to one dude more than the other. It's just what happens as dudes age. A steady increase of fist shaking and cloud shouting.

So is this "cranky old white guy election" worse news for

A. Clouds

B. Kids on their lawns

C. The nation, and by extension the future of humankind

D. Hen fap

We may need a poll

(Also, again, not something I know much about but calling them “two old white guys” just...ignores the fact that Bernie is Jewish and that does matter. It’ll certainly matter if he’s the nominee.)

He’s Jewish. Please don’t forget that, because all the wrong people sure won’t.

Frederik B, Thursday, 5 March 2020 14:15 (six years ago)

read a theory that Warren and Sanders will spend next week's debate eviscerating Biden's past stances, she will drop out the next day, and then the following day endorse and be named as Sander's prospective VP. Nice theory, not sure it'll happen, but it could put wind in Sanders' sails.

My point was that I think a lot of criticism of him is rooted in antisemitism, had seen other people say as much, and Warren supporters aren’t shy about pointing out misogyny towards her. Just saying that I doubt the wilder and more emotive Bernie criticism steers entirely clear of antisemitism.

median punt (gyac), Thursday, 5 March 2020 14:20 (six years ago)
