Basically the only job of the federal government is redistribution of wealth? Good to know, seems like a winner, will keep in mind.

Important issues:

@ing Trump on twitter, calling him a loser post-November after every single tweet.

That's it.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:25 (six years ago)

Since when has humanity's fundamental inability to predict the future ever restrained them from nonetheless taking those futile stabs in the dark at every turn. I ask you.

Lake Meat (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:31 (six years ago)

If Pete and Amy had pulled out earlier Bernie wouldn't have even got this far, but at time it looked like Biden had checked out mentally

he has looked a little more with it recently

Last night, he confused his wife with his sister.

What do we think of Biden's chances in November?

HAHAHA

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

Voting Sanders on 4/28.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:42 (six years ago)

Biden has a chance, but I don't see him getting a whole lot more votes than Clinton did in '16. Are there enough enthusiastic Trump voters of '16 disillusioned now all of a sudden? Can't imagine it.

there's definitely a subset of Trump voters who can't stand the guy anymore. whether or not they'll cast votes for Biden or sit out, who knows. but even with incumbent advantage the fact that he's never really polled over 43% after his first month seems significant

I know that Biden & Sanders poll about equally vs. Trump *right now* but by going with Biden we're basically guaranteeing 7 months of attacks over Ukraine & Burisma, Joe getting handsy, plus whether or not he's sundowning, and it will be infuriating because it'll be spearheaded by a corrupt rapist who is unequivocally the dumbest president in US history. and the media will breathlessly amplify it because they want Trump to win. not that they would help Sanders either but somehow I feel like you'd do a lot better talking about Universal Health Care in the midst of a pandemic, when the Republican party is actively trying to punt 20 million people off their insurance.

that said, young people didn't come out for the primary so maybe Sanders wasn't going to win either. who knows.

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 12:43 (six years ago)

I'll post the link to a story about the Virginia exit polls, the latter of which showed who comprised the Biden coalition there, among whom were independents and former Republicans who detest Trump, i.e. the people who helped flip Virginia in 2017 and 2018.

the petulance on this thread is absurd. You've lived a lifetime of seeing unremarkable white men get things they shouldn't. How is today any different?

yeah but when it's directed at the wrong people it does the opposite of what you are likely intending.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:08 (six years ago)

even Trump is horny for Bernie

The Democrat establishment came together and crushed Bernie Sanders, AGAIN! Even the fact that Elizabeth Warren stayed in the race was devastating to Bernie and allowed Sleepy Joe to unthinkably win Massachusetts. It was a perfect storm, with many good states remaining for Joe!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 4, 2020

So selfish for Elizabeth Warren to stay in the race. She has Zero chance of even coming close to winning, but hurts Bernie badly. So much for their wonderful liberal friendship. Will he ever speak to her again? She cost him Massachusetts (and came in third), he shouldn’t!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 4, 2020

I get that he's clearly angling for Bernie supporters but still, stopped clock etc etc

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:09 (six years ago)

Chances were very good (as they always are) that the candidate for president was going to be underwhelming. I've long accepted that much. My primary concern is whether the candidate in question is so underwhelming that people can't be bothered to roll out of bed and vote.

Lake Meat (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:11 (six years ago)

It looks like I'm gonna be repeating this all day, but what "people" can't be "bothered"? People who look like you? Last night refuted this notion.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:12 (six years ago)

Morbs doubling down with the Johnny Lydon quotes!

Young people once again not to the rescue. But hey, maybe they'll turn out in record numbers in November, blah blah.

For whatever reason there were people out there, who either out of honesty or as an excuse just detested Clinton, and instead voted third party, voted Asshole, or stayed home. I can't imagine Asshole having gained significant support these past few years, so the question is whether Biden could win back those others. I don't get the feeling that anyone outright hates him (other than for not being Sanders), so as long as he runs an OK campaign I imagine he'll do well enough. A lot depends on how he hits at Asshole, but obviously that's sort of a dealer's choice.

I'll preface this by saying that I still intend to vote for Bernie in the Ohio primary on 3/17, futile thought it may be, but Bernie's supporters insisted in 2016 all the way to election day that people should vote their conscience no matter what, and this time it bit them in the ass. Hard.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:25 (six years ago)

the really dangerous scenario for alienating people is bernie having a delegate lead but being just short of a majority with biden getting the nomination via superdelegates. if biden is ahead anyway or wins outright i think you only lose the same small amount of people who wouldn't have voted for any other dem as last time instead of the more widespread feeling of betrayal and disillusionment you could get with a "superdelegates steal the nomination for biden" narrative.

many xxps those Trump tweets aren't angling for Bernie voters, nor does he actually want to face Bernie. I don't get why people are still buying this.

The Lev Parnas tapes belied the latter when he confessed to Bernie being the candidate he most feared in 2016 and then people literally bursting into laughter at the prospect of a Biden nomination—they're crossing their fingers for it.

He's just doing it to sow division, it's what he does best

xps yeah if warren had dropped out it seems like bernie might have just slightly won maine, texas, and massachusetts, narrowing biden's lead and improving the narrative for sanders a bit but that wouldn't change that things too much.

ufo, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:34 (six years ago)

I kind of feel like it doesn't matter if/when Warren drops out at this point. Polls have shown that her supporters' second choice is split pretty evenly between Bernie and non-Bernie candidates (although I haven't seen one since Buttigieg and Klobuchar left the race). So I truly don't know who benefits from her leaving. Arguably if she stays in the race she can attack Biden at the next debate?

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:45 (six years ago)

Those 2nd choice polls are sort of worthless, failing as they do to weigh endorsement

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:50 (six years ago)

I am feeling bummed this morning but people gotta take a couple of things into consideration

1 Biden still has to *campaign* which is a total shit-show, most people haven't seen this bumbling 2020 version and now they're gonna

2 Biden as frontrunner will have a concentrating/clarifying effect on Bernie messaging. The two share a baseline in congress, with votes to explain, and w/r/t dark money he most embodies the Bernie antithesis

anyway this week is gonna blow, really hope Liz gets behind the cause in Michigan

I plan on being disappointed, yeah, I'm not throwing in the towel though. It's fucking Joe Biden.

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 13:54 (six years ago)

For the primary math, its key that Warren attracted people with progressive values that wouldn't otherwise vote for Sanders (around half her support). Drop her out of the equation, and Biden would benefit everywhere as much or more than Sanders.

Only two arguments for keeping her around. She's the attack dog that may have saved us from Bloomberg, and these fuckers are 77+ years old in the midst of an epidemic that targets old people.

wasn't just african-american voters springing for biden. they certainly didn't win him massachusetts or maine.

the electability concerns of the older and blacker states are real and fair, but watching my performatively woke friends on social media breathe a sigh of relief today really lays bare that the problems they had with Bernie really were about the fact they might have to pay higher taxes

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 14:02 (six years ago)

Biden has barely run a campaign so far. Limited funding, few events, in some states no visits. He had little grass roots financial support, and made few special efforts to court minorities. So what did the Senator from Citibank do to earn such loyalty?
