Elizabeth Warren's message to supporters: "There are six more primaries just one week away, and we need your help to keep up the momentum."

j., Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:12 (six years ago)

This is what I was referring to when I said I suspected some behind-the-scenes fuckery. Because seriously: what the fuck. Again, Biden just a couple days ago won his first primary in over 30 years of attempting to become president. He was widely believed to no chance through, what, at least a week ago? And now he's the frontrunner for the democratic nomination by a sizable margin, after winning big in states be barely campaigned in if at all. Seriously. What's happening here.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:16 (six years ago)

well I mean the minimum would be zero, as in not showing up. The minimum nonzero amount of fucks, which means “that guy who was almost president before, right, I want him”

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:17 (six years ago)

Anyway this year I’m definitely getting Germany to give them the citizenship they owe me after making my grandfather stateless in 1941 just in case we get thunderdome next year, fuckin

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:18 (six years ago)

yeah, this isn't a two person Presidential election where someone is forecasted to lose Reagan-Mondale style and puts together a hilarious Bad News Bears run to somehow surge in the polls. it was a guy who was in a congested playing field who was slipping when votes were getting divvied up amongst several centrist candidates, and had two unexpected withdrawals prior to Super Tuesday.

I sure as fuck didn't expect his resurgence but this is why I kept telling people prognosticating was difficult when you didn't know who would drop out and when.

remember the Michigan primary in 2016 where not a single poll or aggregator correctly forecasted Sanders's victory? this shit isn't sorcery but it's a wee bit harder to predict than a Presidential election.

silby, if you could stand the thought of children, you could also console yourself by believing that if you do everything in your power to protect them and raise them well, they might grow up to be part of a better world than any of us can imagine.

not sure this is the best line of argument when there is another very plausible outcome for the world one's children might inherit

Blaming Warren for anything seems ... well, I mean ... The one woman in the race, the one who's drawing like 10 percent of the vote, when the only state where Sanders outpolled the Biden-Bloomberg combo is his own home state -- where he just barely cleared 50 percent of the vote -- but it's HER fault?

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:45 (six years ago)

Stats like this don't exactly make the case for the youth vote surge (per the NYT):

Another data point as Texas is tight: The under-30 share of voters is actually smaller than four years ago: 16% this year, 20% in 2016, according to exit polls.

Of course, that's a share of the total, so it's possible turnout is up across the board and just went up more among people over 30.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:47 (six years ago)

I'm aware of that, I'm just saying, that is an argument that would not work on me, and I suspect would not work on a lot of people

18 year olds who voted for Obama in their first presidential election are 30 now, all this age-cohort stuff seems increasingly mystifying

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:48 (six years ago)

apparently Bloomberg did well with black voters in Alabama, Massachusets, and Texas? I don't understand anything.

akm, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:49 (six years ago)

bloomberg going to "reassess" his campaign tomorrow, likely to drop. have to believe almost all his voters are going to either biden or not voting at all.

oof. this night.

Latino voters under 30 years old in California via @CNN:

Biden 5%

"Bloomberg out ahead in Napa county lol"

my wife and I drove through Piedmont the other day (she works at a school there and was trying to find a shortcut to Orinda that avoids the freeway) and we discovered where all the Bloomberg voters in the Bay Area are.

akm, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:50 (six years ago)

I'm trying not to be too pissy about Warren, but - the centrists consolidated, the numbers weren't there for her, they haven't been for months, and the party clearly wasn't looking at her as a compromise candidate. I don't know what she gained, or could have logically thought she'd gain, by staying in, taking the superpac money, and going harder after Sanders. The results have not been fair to her in terms of her accomplishments and qualifications, but what was the point?

JoeStork, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:54 (six years ago)

I really wonder if she'll endorse Sanders when she drops out.

akm, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:55 (six years ago)

the talk was quite literally brokered convention through like, basically until polls closed today, and the narrative only shifted to "oh wow Biden could get within sniffing distance of getting a delegate majority" once results started rolling in and Biden snuck in a few upsets, and her plan was to wait until the convention and hope to spark a miracle.

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:56 (six years ago)

if she doesn't drop out after today i have no idea what the fuck she's doing. this isn't even about bernie vs biden i just have no idea what the end goal is. she stated before she was playing for a brokered convention, and i could understand the logic behind that at the time, but the entire establishment (including obama "secretly" wink wink) just coalesced around someone else.

xp

if Biden gets nominated, [katherine otm]

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 04:59 (six years ago)

So her goal was to help... ensure a brokered convention?

She was never going to have numbers to play kingmaker once superdelegates are released.
