I live in Virginia now, I’m pissed at the Biden blowout here and I don’t really understand it even after the wave of moderate endorsements and dropouts, but the Elie Mystal article is a tonic and also instructive.

― thewufs, Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Most stories I've read in the last three years have focused on the Virginia suburbs that quietly and inexorably flipped since Trump became president. How liberal were they? It seemed not enough, but they are blue enough.

Members of Phish, who have known Sanders for decades, jam for him

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 02:54 (six years ago)

Fishman made his decision after consulting with his bandmates. Phish, which has a devoted following, usually avoids becoming entangled in politics.

“It’s been a real struggle at times,” Fishman said. “I am a little bit more of an activist.” (Fishman also ran and won a local elected office in Maine in 2017.)

Meanwhile, guitarist Trey Anastasio, he said, “takes the sort of Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Frank Sinatra” approach where you mostly avoid politicians.

“It’s not a matter of right and wrong,” he said. “There are really two different, valid opinions. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I actually lean his way on this.”

After the band huddled, a decision was made: Fishman and bassist Mike Gordon would play at Sanders’s rally on Tuesday as “members of Phish,” but not as Phish.

“The middle ground compromise is that everyone respects everyone's individual activities,” Fishman said. “We aren’t going to have Phish back Bernie Sanders. But if I wear my Bernie Sanders dress on stage, no one says boo about.”

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 02:55 (six years ago)

literally everyone i’ve met from vermont is at most two degrees of separation away from phish. even people that do not like their music know their regular sound guy or something.

after the third story i was like... do not care about phish!

Trey Anastasio, exactly as dumb as you'd expect (re: Frankie baby)

Fishman said he doesn’t mind that Sanders, 78, sometimes refers to his band as “the Phish” rather than “Phish” — a sign that the senator might not be familiar with the the opening chords of “Bathtub Gin” or “Tweezer.”

“I’m not sure if he’s heard a note,” Fishman said, chuckling. “But The Phish? That’s better than some canned response response about how much he loves it.”

My friend just reported on that her stepdad is still waiting at a polling place in Houston. He got there at 4:50 (CST) and is telling her some weaker and older folks have bailed.

Biden better pick Warren, Duckworth, or Abrahms, or someone to make me feel ok about voting for him in November

but he'll probably do something dumb as shit like pick Beto and that will be that

I live in the Hampton Roads area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Newport News Etc.), the second largest metro area in Virginia (after DC, which also encompasses the district itself and Maryland). It’s a polycentric metropolitan region of almost 2 million people, about 3 hrs drive from DC. It’s got the largest military population in the country but it’s solidly and securely blue nowadays. It’s almost 50/50 black/white. I suspect it went overwhelmingly for Biden - most of my students at Christopher Newport University (in Newport News) seem to be Bernie fans, but they’re also mostly from Northern Virginia (DC area), and they may be mostly registered there.

well, look

Democrats just flipped a state house seat in Maine by 15 points tonight that Trump previously carried by 8 points. Terrible news for Susan Collins.

santa clause four (suzy), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 03:23 (six years ago)

bernie did very well in cd5 but it's mostly reported; biden is doing very well in less-reported districts but his lead in them is substantial.

MA is really weird - a solidly blue state for decades that keeps electing Republican governors. I’m from NH, about 3 miles from the MA border, and New England liberalism is a motherfucker - white and Catholic and so weirdly repressed and conservative, but never blatantly religious

MA mostly just likes populist moderates. baker's not significantly different from a biden on the political compass

ciderpress, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 03:35 (six years ago)

I happen to live very close to where Biden is holding his rally tonight so I just strolled over. I lasted 2 minutes. So bleak. I’ve been to better attended house parties and putting him on stage feels like elder abuse. Totally incoherent. I missed the wife/sister bit but saw the protestors get arrested.

Biden won Hennepin County handily. Ramsey numbers still coming in, though.

Someone better start collecting organ donations for Ginsberg.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 03:46 (six years ago)

I mean who the fuck knows. He got voters. A lot of people who vote regularly are relieved to vote for him and there are obviously big problems with bernie’s electoral coalition, which seems to have made negative progress since 2016. But I don’t think he’d be a good president even if he beats expectations and wins, and with him as the candidate and trump as his opponent it’s going to be a truly awful year.

speaking of bad news,

the fact of the day.

Biden as of Saturday: "Aside from fund-raising, he has not campaigned in a Super Tuesday state in over a month."

He also barely had staff there; and barely aired ads.https://t.co/2HqMCiUjPG pic.twitter.com/215ws1HIyV

Xp That feels like ... good news? If he can steam roll like this without resources. I mean I don’t buy that. But I don’t think what his operation spent as the worst funded campaign in a race with 7 people really tells you anything.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 03:55 (six years ago)

Biden is running entirely on name recognition, he doesnt even have a campaign. It’s embarrassing.
