that's not a very direct quote

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:06 (six years ago)

also nobody here thinks that Obama is not a centre-right pillar of the DNC. it would be cool if he came out for Warren or Sanders ("yes we can!"), but it's no surprise that he doesn't.

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:09 (six years ago)

that's right, keep talking about some cable nobody instead of the shame above

― brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius)

Because you're being as monotonous and one-dimensional as ever on these matters? Obama's judges are about the only federal resistance he's getting.

The important Chuck Tingle endorsement has arrived.

wait, the DNC has no special power! I read that today

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:10 (six years ago)

you become president and you get hammered toward the center/status quo as soon as you start caring about the existing critical undercurrent in meetings, committees, etc

mh, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:11 (six years ago)

i'm consistent dude, like Bernie xxxp

obv if I had a blog i'd go for a more punditty vibe

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:11 (six years ago)

Obama didn't seem to get hammered toward the center, he was always there.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:12 (six years ago)

maybe realizing Brother Joe will get slaughtered in November might spare us 4 more years of Trump judges

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:13 (six years ago)

ask Rev Wright

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:13 (six years ago)

what does Reverend Wright have to say about Joe Biden in 2020? I forget.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:16 (six years ago)

So is MSNBC still trying to bury Sanders? Y/N

Folks, lads, lasses, and those beyond the binary:

The. Story. Needs. To. Change.

The narrative needs churn. If Sanders is down, his sudden surge will be the story. If he's up, his downfall is the story. If Biden is inevitable, his unexpectedly dismal showing is the story. When he's written off, his comeback is the story. If Pete is unheard of, his sudden rise to prominence is the story. When he outperforms expectations, his fizzle will be the story.

Lather, rinse, repeat, forever.

I went to journalism school. My grandfather owned a newspaper. When people think of "media bias" they almost always get it wrong: there is bias, but it is rarely for any particular outcome. The bias is toward a changing story.

virussian interference (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:16 (six years ago)

this is why I'm sick of the valorization of journalism and of calls to subscribe to my local paper (owned by right-wing dipshits). The whole enterprise is self-deceptive!

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:17 (six years ago)

The purpose of the news is to make you lose your mind and yet it's all "democracy dies in darkness"

bernie getting elected would bring me some satisfaction. but bernie not getting elected would bring me a real but grim smile. and bernie not getting nommed would bring me real, schadenfreude-y lols.

this fall is gonna be so rad.

silby you always equate “journalism” with corporate news as if that’s the only way

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:22 (six years ago)

this is why I'm sick of the valorization of journalism

Yeah in this regard I agree with silby. I got abruptly sick of the valorization of journalism and shifted my work life elsewhere. It can be a fun job but it's not a priesthood; those who treat it as a sacred calling are, with a few exceptions, deluded.

I remember seeing "All the President's Men" and "Inherit the Wind" and "His Girl Friday" as a kid and thinking journalism looked glamorous and noble, while also being a little roguish and rakish.

You wear hats, you speak truth to power, you bring corruption to light, and you take down evildoers. While drinking basically all the time! Seemed like a great lifestyle.

virussian interference (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:27 (six years ago)

it's a job.

Yerac, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:29 (six years ago)

My first disappointment on entering a professional newsroom was realizing no man dressed like Rosalind Russell.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:29 (six years ago)

that would be two jobs.

Yerac, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:29 (six years ago)

I support my local neighborhood news blogger and enjoy untimely reported magazine pieces.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:29 (six years ago)

Local news is excellent at getting my mom to text me every time there's a crime within 10 miles of her house.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:30 (six years ago)

“Crime is fine” is my message to the local news watchers of America

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:30 (six years ago)

Gonna run for mayor on a “crime is fine” platform

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:32 (six years ago)

i am nearing the end of the ps4 spiderman game and am kind of annoyed at the way they portray cconvicted riminals that broke out of jail overtaking the city!

Yerac, Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:37 (six years ago)

Ok but re: "crime is fine": Yeah there are a lot of crimes that are totally harmless. And a bunch more that are actively fun.

Even the crimes that aren't exactly fine? well... most of them are VASTLY less bad than the gigantic systemic injustices that keep the downtrodden where they are.

But I digress. Rosalind Russell looked simply smashing in a pinstripe suit and Cary Grant's offhand phone manner should serve as a model to all of us, not matter our walk of life.

Don't get me started on Robert Redford wearing a bad 70s necktie.

the valorization of journalism is really more accurately the valorization of newspapers, which are rapidly ceasing to exist

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:53 (six years ago)

Well, yeah

virussian interference (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:54 (six years ago)

just that it was never really valorizing the likes of MSNBC (or most broadcast journalism, cronkite excepted)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 02:57 (six years ago)

I dunno, there are a lot of people who saw Clooney’s Edward R Murrow movie and started worshipping it. Plus The Newsroom for people who couldn’t get enough Sorkin.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:02 (six years ago)

White knighting of journalists was around long before that flick.

As well as distrust of the press

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:07 (six years ago)

Lest we forget "Broadcast News," which made at least some nerd guys think they might kinda have even a platonic flirtation with Holly Hunter (and that that was, in sone cosmic sense, enough to justify the whole enterprise).

Disclosure: I may be a trifle overinvested in this topic

And should probably shut up now and go to bed

virussian interference (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:08 (six years ago)

Final thought: my wife is a journalist and she was heavily influenced by the Reeve Suoerman movie where he looks at her underwear and then takes her flying.

Basically the cinema has not done a good job of presenting us with accurate information models of the workaday details of journalism as a profession.

virussian interference (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:11 (six years ago)

As an actual current working journalist (just filed my second story of the day, hey) I agree that a whole lot of the Heroic Journalist Guardian of Liberty stuff is dumb. I do think it's important work, and done well it can contribute to a more informed polis, but it has always had abundant flaws and foibles, failures of perspective and imagination, and an overall tendency to defer to the status quo at any given point.

Nobody has ever asked to look at my underwear, though.

Plus hats. Don't forget the hats.

virussian interference (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:18 (six years ago)

If there weren't local journalists sitting in on all the sessions and hearings at the state capitol I wouldn't have any idea what was going on there, which would be bad. That work is not exactly glamorous but I'm sure glad there are still people getting paid to do it.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:27 (six years ago)

You wanna talk not glamorous, how about you're 4 hours into a County Commission meeting and ready to go home and some damn neighborhood group shows up to fight with some damn developer and the prospect of ever getting out of there starts to feel increasingly remote ...

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:34 (six years ago)

My journalism hopes were dashed in high school when a friend a few years older graduated early from USC and came back to take his first job as a professional... driving around BFE covering high school football games.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 3 March 2020 03:52 (six years ago)
