clearly not acceptable and appealing enough to get their votes

You can still be pretty acceptable and appealing without being someone's first choice. But look, I'm not saying this is going to happen, just what Doctor Casino is saying -- she's the only plausible bridge candidate. it's more likely we are not going to try to bridge, and that's fine, because Dem voters will get behind the nominee whoever it is. Biden: "if I don't get the nomination and Bernie gets it, I'm going to work like hell for him." Sanders said much the same about Biden just the other day, can't find the quote now.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 2 March 2020 16:26 (six years ago)

I keep marvelling at how people seem to want to spin her as a moderate or pragmatic alternative to Sanders when she is running on virtually the same platform, with less of a popular base, after a term and a half as a shit-disturber in the Senate.

It seems relatively minor but this was a little interesting. Anyone know how credible this report is?: https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-one-corporate-tax-shelter-bernie-sanders-supported-is-vermonts?ref=scroll

Also, how realistic is Sanders's suggested plan of using the VP to force legislation through the Senate under budget reconciliation rules vs abolishing the filibuster altogether? It seems like something a President could actually do but also a curious way of using executive power?

Sund4r, Monday, 2 March 2020 16:28 (six years ago)

I really wonder what it would look like if we did ranked choice because I think that's what is killing Warren; you don't get points for being everyone's second- or third-favorite.

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Monday, 2 March 2020 16:30 (six years ago)

the pragmatism comes with all her documented plans. Being that organized leads people to consider you boring.

Yerac, Monday, 2 March 2020 16:32 (six years ago)

Specifically Gen Xers, ime. Which is why my Facebook feed is disproportionately pro-Warren.

I mean, it's white college-educated voters in general. But yeah, probably the youngest of those tip more toward Bernie, and the oldest tip toward Biden.

jaymc, Monday, 2 March 2020 16:43 (six years ago)

i did this 538 Super Tuesday sim with my own guesses of where each state would go and ended up with uh Sanders and Biden exactly tied at 14.8% chance to win a majority :(

I thought this piece really crystallized the appeal of Warren for me (and others like me) but also pointed to why she hasn't won over the masses:

Warren’s appeal to a certain sort of politically engaged Democrat is that she combines bold progressive goals with extensive experience navigating US institutions and detailed plans for bureaucratic reform. It’s the best of both worlds, ambitious and pragmatic.

But there may not be all that many Democratic primary voters who want those two things together. It may be that the Democrats who want ambition don’t want pragmatism and the ones who claim to want pragmatism don’t want ambition.

Indeed, I find both Sanders and Biden acceptable and appealing and I may well not vote for either of those guys!

I keep marvelling at how people think a politician is their platform!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 2 March 2020 16:48 (six years ago)

a few months ago the race was full of people who seemed pretty acceptable but who were (almost) no one's first choice

I mean, she certainly gives the impression that her plans are pretty important to her.

Sund4r, Monday, 2 March 2020 16:55 (six years ago)

With at least one exception.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 2 March 2020 16:55 (six years ago)

I like how the angry lefties in the party have gone from being resentful at having their votes taken for granted by the Democratic Party to taking the votes of angry centrists for granted.

many xps

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:16 (six years ago)

40 years of being hectored about voting blue no matter who will do that.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:16 (six years ago)

Aside from real political concerns, the best reason to nominate Bernie is to test centrists commitment to the bit.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:18 (six years ago)

I suspect the "these simps will whinge endlessly and then turn out for whoever" argument is largely correct but as with everything else, we'll see

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:19 (six years ago)

Let’s not with “simps” ffs

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:21 (six years ago)

"Also not sure what the basis for regarding her as acceptable and appealing to the broadest coalition of Dem voters when she is clearly not acceptable and appealing enough to get their votes" She's almost everyone's second choice, just not everyone's first.

I havne't filled in my ballot yet and was going to vote for her in CA since I assume Bernie is going to win CA in a landslide; but now even people locally are urging everyone to vote Sanders and not her to avoid this convention thing. Maybe I'm naive but IMO if it comes to a brokered convention between Warren and Sanders, that should be a win/win. That said I guess everyone is a fucking whiny bitch who will throw a fit if it's not their candidate.

akm, Monday, 2 March 2020 17:24 (six years ago)

It wouldn’t be a brokered convention between Warren and Sanders, though.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:26 (six years ago)

a simp is a person lacking common sense. Is this ableist now or something?

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:27 (six years ago)

ffs, this thread.

Yerac, Monday, 2 March 2020 17:31 (six years ago)

The 'second choice' section here doesn't support the idea that Warren is almost everyone's second choice, except for Sanders voters: https://morningconsult.com/2020-democratic-primary/

Are there other polls showing this?

Sund4r, Monday, 2 March 2020 17:32 (six years ago)

Warren has no constituency here

in MN my professional-management-class friends my gen and older are quite sold on her, in a way that seems to replicate the common observation about academic voters, that the tenured go for warren, the adjuncts go for bernie (not just an age thing, as jaymc says, but a class thing). but these are people for whom it would basically be too normie to boost klobuchar as the hometown centrist, so it's hard to say how much of a showing warren will have against that expected effect on the outcome. i think warren is not having much of an actual impact here outside the hopes of those fans. sanders beat clinton pretty decisively here but iirc that was perceived to have something to do—aside from an affirmation of sanders' politics and the winnability of caucuses—with the mysterious combination of clintonian baggage and midwestern reluctance to put a woman in leadership, i.e. maybe idiosyncratic to HRC, maybe not.

Aside from real political concerns, the best reason to nominate Bernie is to test centrists commitment to the bit.

I feel like that commitment is not even slightly in doubt, and that fact is indeed the core of Sanders's electability case.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:43 (six years ago)

xp I don't know "simp" this way, it seems sort of antiquated if anything, like a dig you'd make in the 50s

Webcam Du Bois (Hadrian VIII), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:44 (six years ago)

“Simp” has been blowing up on the webs this year which is why Simon H had it ready to hand

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:45 (six years ago)

xxp - me too... mostly. We should find out!

The best reason to nominate Sanders is to beat Donald Trump.

I thought we decided itt that there’s no such thing as being in the Democratic party

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:51 (six years ago)

Now you're getting it!

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:52 (six years ago)

Tulsi voters might be cool with getting to look at her for 8 months then lose to Trump.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 2 March 2020 17:53 (six years ago)

Yes, but "sticking it to centrists" is not on my list of priorities xpost to DJP

the "parasocial relationship projection" Discourse is starting to really bug me, because it doesn't acknowledge that "bernie sanders would totally rhapsodize about paris is burning, or have heard of it at all," while funny, is also an example of parasocial projection by the definition put forth by The Discourse

what?

akm, Monday, 2 March 2020 18:08 (six years ago)

I don't know. They had to perform as "Public Enemy Radio" when they were w/o Flav

didn't have to: it's a seperate entity without the live band or Flav, so Chuck and DJ Lord could play benefits more economically

xpost katherine, akm. I think I said once awhile ago that I can't imagine having this kind of emotional/active investment in someone (in this case Bernie) unless they are paying me or I am having sex with them. It's weird but I also don't follow teams or engage in fandoms.
