It's not an unfair cop, although I don't think Warren's own legislativeSenate record is much more impressive in those terms? (CFPB was pre-Senate iirc, although arguably it might show executive experience at a national level, which could be more relevant to the position, despite her ambitious legislative platform.) The hope would be that electing Sanders to a position of greater power would make it more feasible for him to get things done but there are a lot of unknowns.

Sund4r, Sunday, 1 March 2020 12:47 (six years ago)

I mean, Sanders has got some worthwhile amendments through, e.g. funding for community health centres. Neither of them has that much of a record of implementing things on the scale of a wealth tax, Green New Deal, free tuition, or M4A (via a public option or otherwise), which is what both of them are running on.

Sund4r, Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:00 (six years ago)

how do you build an "impressive legislative record" when most of your party are "centrist" do-nothings who revile your ideology?

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:03 (six years ago)

"What are you gonna do on Inauguration Day?"

"Watch Liz take the oath of office, of course. You?"

"Same. Then I'll brunch with dear friends as we celebrate President Warren!"

huh?

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:08 (six years ago)

Yeah, if anything, Sanders mobilizing his base to pressure Congress seems like a slightly more believable plan than Warren getting these things done with idk administrative competence or academic credentials or idk what.xp

Sund4r, Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:10 (six years ago)

xp last night:

I've lived in suburban Texas, very progressive Wisconsin, and suburban Louisiana. Only for 1/7 presidential votes in my adult life have I mattered much. I donate to 5 distant senate races, rather than my own. The US is running on Democracy 2.0, when most of the world is on Democracy 4.0 and above...

Fuck yes! its an expression of frustration.

Save us, Covid19 (Sanpaku), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:11 (six years ago)

how do you build an "impressive legislative record" when most of your party are "centrist" do-nothings who revile your ideology?

this question, asked rightly, would tend to make a person ask "so, do I want to vote for the candidate whose platform I like best, or the candidate who will be able to get the centrists, who aren't going anywhere, to pass more progressive legislation than they'd otherwise pass?"

Sanders seems more likely to do that imo.2xp

Sund4r, Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:13 (six years ago)

^agree, also we are ejecting dozens of centrists in 2022

just a general evaluation of LoserLiz, Sotosyn

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:14 (six years ago)

So it looks like Sanders only got about 10,000 more raw votes in the primary than in 2016?

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:34 (six years ago)

thats's not surprising, there's 3x as many candidates

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:40 (six years ago)

assuming sanders is still the frontrunner (he is), SC is a good reminder that his campaign still has work to do on Black voter turnout, particularly the older Black voters that historically turn out. folks itt saying it's a red state is not the way to think about things when he's going to to need support from Black voters in many swing states (and to get his bills passed).

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:06 (six years ago)

y’know it’s interesting, I see people complaining that Bernie supporters are being dismissive and disrespectful of the good voters in South Carolina, but many of these people are also complaining that people aren’t voting for Warren when it’s so super obvious she’s the most electable and it’s such a travesty that she’s being erased. Seems like they’re trying to have it both ways?

honky wonk badonkadonk (crüt), Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:13 (six years ago)

(I like Warren a lot btw)

honky wonk badonkadonk (crüt), Sunday, 1 March 2020 14:22 (six years ago)

Well, yeah. As poorly as Sanders scored with black voters over 30, Warren did worse.

Yes but I believe the Democratic coalition includes more black conservatives than white conservatives

honky wonk badonkadonk (crüt), Sunday, 1 March 2020 15:02 (six years ago)

who are black voters gonna go for in Trump v Sanders? hmmmmm

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 1 March 2020 15:35 (six years ago)

Democrats are sleepwalking into a disaster and threatening to nominate a completely unelectable candidate solely because of his unrealistic promises. Only one man can stop this. It's time for Barack Obama to endorse Bernie Sanders.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 1 March 2020 15:35 (six years ago)

Sund4r and Morbius: Why do you think Sanders would be more likely than Warren to get progressive legislation passed in Congress? I don't buy that mobilizing the base to exert pressure on Mitch McConnell would actually be effective, and I don't know how you get very much done in the Senate if you're not willing to end the filibuster.

jaymc, Sunday, 1 March 2020 15:58 (six years ago)

For me, the most-persuasive argument for Sanders at this point is an electability one.

jaymc, Sunday, 1 March 2020 16:03 (six years ago)

Oh cool this again

Οὖτις, Sunday, 1 March 2020 16:05 (six years ago)

who are black voters gonna go for in Trump v Sanders?

Potentially nobody

Οὖτις, Sunday, 1 March 2020 16:06 (six years ago)

i also have my reservations about the "bringing the fight to mitch mcconnell's backyard" strategy but otoh bernie sanders has already been shifting the national conversation and the way we talk about what can be done in this country

honky wonk badonkadonk (crüt), Sunday, 1 March 2020 16:06 (six years ago)

Not gonna happen.

We need the Senate. But y'all knew that.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 1 March 2020 16:30 (six years ago)

So weird. He “failed to stop” what 25-30 years ago? Warren was a Republican corporate lawyer then. Is a single leftwing lawmaker supposed to unravel hundreds of years capitalism and imperialism by themselves? What exactly is the line of criticism here? https://t.co/71cshEEpCy

I know what he raised.

jaymc, Sunday, 1 March 2020 17:00 (six years ago)

that press release seems nuts - they're not even saying that they foresee any victories, just an accumulation of delegates that will somehow result in her making a play for the nomination at the convention. Who is going to unite behind a candidate who doesn't win anything? Even if it somehow works, how will it look in the general election?

JoeStork, Sunday, 1 March 2020 17:00 (six years ago)

basically it's the reality competition show approach - "I was never the best at any of the primaries, but I wasn't the worst at any of them!!! I'm a viable candidate!"

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Sunday, 1 March 2020 17:03 (six years ago)

Buttigieg's campaign is taking the same approach.

Buttigieg's campaign just held a call on background about its Super Tuesday strategy.

The plan, aides say, is to replicate the Iowa strategy -- delegate maximization rather than the popular vote totals -- on a 16-state scale ...

jaymc, Sunday, 1 March 2020 17:05 (six years ago)

Anyway, last night I saw a bunch of Sanders supporters saying, in reaction to the Warren speech, "I don't understand why she's doing this." Because she's trying to win the nomination!

jaymc, Sunday, 1 March 2020 17:07 (six years ago)

if you care about ending the filibuster you should vote for bernie because as president he has no control over this and as senator he could vote against ending it..............

k3vin k., Sunday, 1 March 2020 17:15 (six years ago)

you know I love all of you overworrying dorks but for the life of me I can’t figure out why we’re even thinking about who’s going to pass shit in the senate when all that matters is nominating the most left-wing judges and not starting wars
