Is it? With the exception of 1984, 10 states have decided the presidency in my lifetime. Why not bring attention to this absurdity?

Save us, Covid19 (Sanpaku), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:24 (six years ago)

I have a feeling this will dwindle down to Sanders vs Biden with everyone else dropping out within a month. But I don't know what the primary schedule is after this week.

akm, Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:26 (six years ago)

Why not abolish the electoral college you dingus

℺ ☽ ⋠ ⏎ (✖), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:27 (six years ago)

while bloomberg doesn’t appear to have much of a plan after super tuesday, he doesn’t have the whole “ran outta money” problem that others will have.

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:30 (six years ago)

iow mikes not dropping out this early after all the money he’s spending...probably

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:31 (six years ago)

why is everyone surprised joe biden won in a state he has been nigh-guaranteed to win since he announced he was running

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:32 (six years ago)

I'd love to abolish the electoral college. But no Republican state will sign onto the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. The ridiculous Senate, where by 2040 a third of Americans will control 70% of the Senate, is worse.

So, we pretend SC matters. We pretend CA matters. Why not stop pretending?

Save us, Covid19 (Sanpaku), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:33 (six years ago)

also I see joe biden is following bloomberg's strategy of attempting to make memes (sorry if this has been posted)

he wants to repeatedly lower bar in the dingy gym of sisyphus

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:38 (six years ago)

Not so fast.

Mr. Biden is counting on a win in the South Carolina primary on Saturday to help position him as the leading moderate challenger to Mr. Sanders, after three straight losses shredded Mr. Biden’s status as the onetime front-runner. But even if he succeeds in South Carolina, his lack of resources and thin campaign organization in California and other states that vote next week on Super Tuesday present a daunting challenge to a candidacy already on precarious footing.

The Narrative is not convinced

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:49 (six years ago)

Respectable showing for Bernard imo

justice 4 CCR (Sparkle Motion), Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:52 (six years ago)

On the other hand, if voters in Super Tuesday states interpret the SC results as a sign that Biden is the only moderate who can conceivably win, then that may make up for a lack of ground game. On the other other hand, lots of people have already voted.

jaymc, Sunday, 1 March 2020 02:59 (six years ago)

Everyone expected Biden to win but I think the margin is definitely on the very high end of his projections. Data for progress has been one of the most accurate pollsters so far and they had Biden only winning by 9. I don’t think tonight is reason to panic either though. Bloomberg dropping out would worry me a lot more but I think he holds on at least through Florida

Vote for Biden? Check.

does he really want to bring back a term associated with Lieberman?

Guy was a friend of Strom Thurmond so I think he's fine with it.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 1 March 2020 03:33 (six years ago)

I'd be content with a primary system in which only states that were within 5% on the last general had a say. It would be more economic and strategic.

that is a ridiculous idea

You're still not getting the point.

10 states matter. That's wrong.

So how does a national political party call attention to that fact?

Save us, Covid19 (Sanpaku), Sunday, 1 March 2020 03:55 (six years ago)

Y-y-y-your idea?????

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Sunday, 1 March 2020 03:57 (six years ago)

i thought 2 of the last 5 presidential elections won by popular vote losers was a pretty good one?

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Sunday, 1 March 2020 03:57 (six years ago)

You haven't explained what purpose "calling attention to that fact" would serve xp

I think assuming the swing states that apparently decide elections aren't influenced by other states, or that voter turnout could get messed up in non-swing states through selections in which they had no part, is erroneous

mh, Sunday, 1 March 2020 04:02 (six years ago)

which states mattered in the 1984 presidential election?

mh, Sunday, 1 March 2020 04:03 (six years ago)

Guys, I seriously doubt that Sanpaku intended his post as a white paper report on the best way to fix the current imbalances in the electoral system, so much as an expression of frustration at same. I'd note that the ilxor who has never posted a badly conceived response in regard to an emotionally charged topic should throw the first stone. iow, maybe Ned should weigh in.

thought he was pointing out the absurd reality that since most states are red or blue no matter who is running, we let the voters of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania decide the nominee

HRC focused on the ones that matter, and it turned out the ones that don't matter, matter.

It's not an unfair cop, although I don't think Warren's own legislativeSenate record is much more impressive in those terms? (CFPB was pre-Senate iirc, although arguably it might show executive experience at a national level, which could be more relevant to the position, despite her ambitious legislative platform.) The hope would be that electing Sanders to a position of greater power would make it more feasible for him to get things done but there are a lot of unknowns.

Sund4r, Sunday, 1 March 2020 12:47 (six years ago)

I mean, Sanders has got some worthwhile amendments through, e.g. funding for community health centres. Neither of them has that much of a record of implementing things on the scale of a wealth tax, Green New Deal, free tuition, or M4A (via a public option or otherwise), which is what both of them are running on.

Sund4r, Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:00 (six years ago)

how do you build an "impressive legislative record" when most of your party are "centrist" do-nothings who revile your ideology?

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:08 (six years ago)

Yeah, if anything, Sanders mobilizing his base to pressure Congress seems like a slightly more believable plan than Warren getting these things done with idk administrative competence or academic credentials or idk what.xp

Sund4r, Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:10 (six years ago)

xp last night:

I've lived in suburban Texas, very progressive Wisconsin, and suburban Louisiana. Only for 1/7 presidential votes in my adult life have I mattered much. I donate to 5 distant senate races, rather than my own. The US is running on Democracy 2.0, when most of the world is on Democracy 4.0 and above...

Fuck yes! its an expression of frustration.

Save us, Covid19 (Sanpaku), Sunday, 1 March 2020 13:11 (six years ago)

how do you build an "impressive legislative record" when most of your party are "centrist" do-nothings who revile your ideology?

this question, asked rightly, would tend to make a person ask "so, do I want to vote for the candidate whose platform I like best, or the candidate who will be able to get the centrists, who aren't going anywhere, to pass more progressive legislation than they'd otherwise pass?"
