Lloyd Pinchback played sax, flute, & cowbell with Chuck Brown’s Soul Searchers. First sat in with Chuck Brown on a gig that still happened in SE DC on the day MLK was killed in 68. He wrote Soul Searchers song “Ashley’s Roachclip “ that had a drum break sampled on many rap records . Here’s my obituary for him

Thanks. Real interesting guy. I went to the memorial service Saturday. His current DC gogo band Proper Utensils did some songs, and the Pastor’s son did an incredible version of Sam Cooke’s A Change is Gonna Come. Plenty of speakers as well who all brought tears as well as smiles

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 February 2020 14:38 (six years ago)

Yeah, that was a great piece. I tweeted the link.

We regret to inform you that comics publisher Russ Cochran has passed away. He was best known for taking painstaking efforts to reprint the classic EC comics line in beautiful collected editions.

Goodbye Russ, thank you for your contributions to the world of comics. pic.twitter.com/tz9tCtz5p5

Jahn Teigen, 70: lead singer of Popol Vuh, and the first act ever to score nul points at Eurovision in 1978.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 10:21 (six years ago)

(not that Popol Vuh, tragically)

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 10:28 (six years ago)

You'd prefer if one of the members of the other Popol Vuh had died?

Oh, there were two Popol Vuhs? It did seem like a bizarre career trajectory.

Popol Vuh (2)
Profile: Norwegian progressive rock group, established 1972, renamed in 1974 to Popol Ace to avoid confusion with the German Popol Vuh.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 12:10 (six years ago)

Uniquely, but not wholly unexpectedly, Geir preferred the Norwegian one.

I was supply teaching literally two weeks ago in a class where I'd been left a picture-book about Katherine Johnson to read to the students. We looked up some YouTube clips afterwards and were amazed to find out she was still alive at 101.
