a band called Gringo Star is playing where I live soon. I actually like a couple of songs by Ringo Deathstarr. but come on

Joanna Gruesome were pretty good too

Colonel Poo, Friday, 21 February 2020 23:08 (six years ago)

I always thought Jefferson Airhead was quite a good name

― fetter

there's an old '60s band who called themselves "Hamilton Streetcar", the one song I know of theirs is pretty good

are there any good ones of these? i always thought "Beatless" was kinda funny in a MAD magazine movie parody kind of way, but now i can't seem to confirm that was a real band and not some record store joker's labeling of a used CD section divider.

― Doctor Casino

can confirm the existence of BeatlesS, have a couple of their tracks on a comp CD from the Wifflefist label. Good comp, even if i was more taken with Bicentennial Quarters.... it looks like Bicentennial Quarters' only other appearances on records are the comps Cognitive Mapping Volume II and a fairly expensive limited fundraising CD also including BeatlesS called... yes... Power of Tower!

I just remembered that there's a Japanese band called Sex Machineguns? Which I admit I find amusing. Don't know what they sound like though.

― may the force leave us alone (zchyrs)

i think they're a visual kei band? the song of theirs i've heard is some pretty great power metal, i like it plenty

I hold the thread starter responsible for my having just remembered Master Musicians Of Bukkake.

― Noel Emits

...who i believe once appeared on a festival bill with the master musicians of joujouka! some real "slayer vs. slayer" shit going down there...

All of these are the worst, but I think Joy Orbison should take it a step further and call himself Boy Georbison.

I’m still impressed that Kurt Vile isn’t a pun.

I was just thinking that Matching Mole is a pun based on another band name, so therefore this is officially good now.

Yonic Sooth could literally mean "female truth" so not necessarily terrible as long as you're Kim Gordon perhaps.

Heh, I totally forgot that my buddy used to play a version of "Love Will Keep Us Together" with bluesy guitar licks, then introduce it as a song by Clapton & Tennille.

Just seen this..

"Formed in 1968, Jazz Sabbath were considered by many to be at the forefront of the new jazz movement coming out of England at the time. The eagerly awaited debut album, scheduled for release on Friday 13th February 1970, was destined never to be released. Until now.

Mark G, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 20:02 (six years ago)

"When Milton was finally released from hospital in September 1970, he found out that a band from Birmingham, conveniently called ‘Black Sabbath’, had since released two albums containing metal versions of what he claims were his songs.

Have we mentioned Thelonious Monster? Do they count? How about the (apocryphal?) story of Tabitha Soren mishearing Bill Clinton and thinking he was a fan of The Loneliest Monk?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 03:00 (six years ago)

Thelonious Monster may be the ur-text of this naming convention...? Is there another one that predates them?
