As far as "highest rated" goes... Were there any Democratic prez debates before '84? I don't remember any. Teddy def didn't debate Jimmy. I know Mondale said "Where's the beef?" to Hart.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 February 2020 00:05 (six years ago)

1976
The first debate took place in Boston on February 23, with Birch Bayh, Jimmy Carter, Fred Harris, Henry M. Jackson, Milton Shapp, Sargent Shriver, and Mo Udall participating.

A second, a month later, had Carter, Frank Church, Harris, Jackson and Udall on the panel. And in May, with now-front runner Jimmy Carter boycotting, Church and Udall participated in a third.

1980
Despite repeated calls by Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy, President Jimmy Carter refused to debate.

wow I'm amazed Chris Matthews hasn't waxed rhapsodically about the clash of Scoop Jackson and Birch Bayh

(unless he has)

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 February 2020 00:18 (six years ago)

Can't seem to find footage of the '76 stuff. Probably has something to do with it being pre-CSPAN.

i'd be willing to bet that if that was on a network, it was on Sunday afternoon.

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 February 2020 00:30 (six years ago)

man, Shriver thought he'd get a good bounce from being McGovern's running mate?

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 February 2020 00:33 (six years ago)

hell, I remember long ago, in October and November, when we noted how Sanders was getting no coverage.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 21 February 2020 00:44 (six years ago)

And the many misleading cable news graphs where he'd be put behind someone he was leading or be left out of headlines.

The media is mostly incompetent and a bit corrupt.

the thought of someone who might make them ever so slightly less rich.

neither Warren nor Sanders will make anyone less rich, they will just make some other people less poor

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Friday, 21 February 2020 02:26 (six years ago)

probably needs to do better at the "how do we pay for all this" thing because that's the one I hear all the time

I don't disagree but Buttigieg did make my skin crawl a little with his conservative talking points on M4A. Most countries that have a similar model are spending less on health care than the US; accepting the framing that this is a huge new expense (as opposed to an equitable and efficient way of distributing the funding for an existing system) almost seems like campaigning for the GOP. Talking about this as a tax raise on the middle-class without even mentioning what people would save in medical expenses didn't help. Surely similar points could even be made by someone to Buttigieg's right about Buttigieg's own plan for a public option. I could understand expressing reservations about the marketability of M4A, the feasibility of getting it through Congress, changing things too fast, even ideological opposition to a ban on private insurance, but the angle Buttigieg took really seemed off imo.

OZYMANDIAS, THE FRESH KING OF KINGS
I whistled for a traveler, and when he came near,
His land was antique, and he frowned at my sneer,
If anything I could say ye mighty, despair,
But I thought, “Nah, forget it—my wreck’s boundless and bare!”

^ says nothing in that article about Bangalore. there are plenty of call centers in the USA, morbs. I'll bet there's even one in NV, but if not, I know that South Dakota has plenty of them.

i just remembered that part of the debate where buttigieg made the jokey observation that he "only" had one house, and my first reaction was "wow, i wonder what it would be like to own a house"

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Friday, 21 February 2020 19:43 (six years ago)

Srsly. And also: I hope he's hounded endlessly after he writes some stupid book and fails to immediately divest himself of all but $999,999.99 of the proceeds.

If I understood the one article correctly that I read on the topic, isn't one of the "houses" they're attributing to Sanders is his DC condo that he has to have to work in DC? And which anyone who gets elected to a position in DC needs to have?

Yeah, a single family home in Burlington, a 1bdrm row house in DC, and a small bungalow cottage. The most expensive of them is $500k iirc.

if anyone notices a new wave of sanders supporters being nice and agreeable instead of calling people they don't like rats, it's most likely a sophisticated russian trolling campaign

Sanders tells reporters he learned about Russian interference in his campaign about a month ago.

But asked why it came out now, Sanders points to the fact that the NV caucuses are a day away. And adds sarcastically, "Washington Post? Good friends."

I haven't seen any video, but his remarking "Washington Post? Good friends" seems to me to fall well below the threshold of 'lashing out', a phrase which to my mind implies far more than two dismissive words.
