The dumb thing is that they will still be super rich after the wealth tax

if there was anything sane or rational about hoarding obscene amounts of wealth they wouldn't be super rich in the first place

Yeah exactly. Like if the fact that you might pay 3 extra cents (or whatever) on every dollar you make over 5 mil (or whatever) is why you’re Really Excited About Mike then christ just go be a Republican.

(Which, I mean you probably are, and you and your ilk’s long term plan to infiltrate and takeover the Democratic Party has really paid off I guess but still fuck you)

Warren lost claim to being a unity candidate after her weird flare-up with Sanders last month. After that and backtracking on M4A she was going nowhere.

Chris L, Thursday, 20 February 2020 16:14 (six years ago)

eh it’s a primary and candidates are going to snipe but I’ll grant you that stanning the likes of Klobs and passive aggressive swipes at Bernie over t he culinary union’s non-endorsement is definitely nagl.

speaking of her campaign in the past tense because omg two stupid white-ass northern states voted.

yeah, but they were also two states she spent nearly all of her time and focus on in the past year or so

Warren lost claim to being a unity candidate after her weird flare-up with Sanders last month. After that and backtracking on M4A she was going nowhere.

both of these things happened after her support started falling, not before, but it's a convenient narrative for people who were always gonna vote for sanders anyway

Feel like a crucial element of Buttigieg's makeup was revealed when one of the moderators made reference to an award-winning essay he wrote and his face lit up with the biggest smile I've ever seen on him. He looked eerily like a ten-year-old who'd just been told he won first prize in the science fair.

Cannot lie, I find this aspect of him tremendously relatable! He likes to be praised! Don't we all? I know you're supposed to hide it but I sort of like that he can't.

yep, same. i think i hate him so much because he represents a part of me that i fucking hate and have been trying to murder out of myself ever since. i once posted a photo of myself as a 10-year-old pete buttigieg winning a math contest. you'll have to trust me because the image link is now broken, but roxymuzak correctly pointed out that i looked like a smug bastard

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 February 2020 16:29 (six years ago)

IA and NH serve better as a sieve for Republican candidates than for Democrats.

The day after the debate, Elizabeth Warren bought a full page ad in Sheldon Adelson’s newspaper saying Sheldon Adelson will pay $2.3 billion the first year of her wealth tax. I think that’s called chutzpah. pic.twitter.com/dV7O3G8MJu

i will continue canvassing for warren Sat. i liked how she kept going back to core values for her, and I believe her to be sincere about em based on her actions with consumer protection and bankruptcy, and her consistency in msg.

i was heartened to see her direct insistence at bloomps. his face was just “i got nothing.”

botox biden 0_0 piling onto bloomps in a verbatim echo just after her was wonderfully sad what a scrub. still, he was better than I expected overall.

biggest surprise for me is—i regretfully admit i rather liked buttigieg’s style, it is his substance that I have zero confidence in. he has to move to bigger tougher stages for longer for me to imagine him anywhere near president.

i don’t trust Klobuchar the more i know and see. and she has the worst environmental prospects of moderates.

no surprise, i liked Bernie, I just don’t have as much confidence in him getting it all done, and being around a while.

xp to Karl Malone: There's no way to ask this in a way that doesn't sound condescending but how old are you? In my thirties I hated this part of myself and wanted to expunge it. In my late forties and as the parent of kids that age, I have come to accept it as a part of ourselves to be accepted and even embraced; in some sense allowing yourself to feel it enables you to have a healthy relationship with it.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 20 February 2020 16:43 (six years ago)

i honestly can't blame Klobs for hating Pete, he really is smarm personified and if I was pushing 60 and running for president I'd probably want to box his ears too.

Pete's demeanor is perfect for a kid who just delivered all his newspapers extra early so he can go home and take a second shower before school.

Har Mar Klobuchar (PBKR), Thursday, 20 February 2020 16:55 (six years ago)

Tbf, I believe Warren's proposed tax is 2% of the entire worth of people who have more than 50M in accumulated assets, not just a marginal rate on yearly income over $50M. There is a p big difference. xp to will

all of the above would be fine, except that Pete is not benign.

Yes. Interestingly in the live clips I've seen of her explaining it, she talks about the taxability of wealth as if it's "income." I think ppl don't know what "wealth" really is anyway.

It is kind of dumb that "he likes to receive praise for good work but he doesn't actually CARE about the work, just the praise" is an attack line, seeing as the work still exists after he's done with it

The context was that he won an award for writing an essay praising Sanders's socialism and now he was perceived to be still taking pride in the award while attacking Sanders's socialism. I agree with you in part but I think the the concern behind that attack line is that someone who cares more about recogniton than the substance of work is liable to do whatever will get him the most praise at the moment. That said, wgaf what soneone wrote as a teenager.

With considerable charm, you still have made a choice (Sund4r), Thursday, 20 February 2020 17:14 (six years ago)

xp to eephus! 36! and no worries, it's not condescending. i'm not immune to the idea of coming to terms with it, but for now i'm happy to just name it and see it as a thing that happened, rather than physically recoiling whenever the memory comes up

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 February 2020 17:15 (six years ago)

I believe Warren's proposed tax is 2% of the entire worth of people who have more than 50M in accumulated assets, not just a marginal rate on yearly income over $50M.

This can't possibly be right -- it would create a massive cost of nosing above an arbitrary asset threshold.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 20 February 2020 17:23 (six years ago)

Its 2% of wealth EXCEEDING 50M. If you have 49 million in your assets: 0 wealth tax. If you have 51 million in assets, $20K.

tetragrammaton in vain (Sanpaku), Thursday, 20 February 2020 17:26 (six years ago)

those poor, unfortunate people with >$50M in assets, my heart goes out to them

sleeve, Thursday, 20 February 2020 17:27 (six years ago)

The Ultra-Millionaire Tax taxes the wealth of the richest Americans. It applies only to households with a net worth of $50 million or more—roughly the wealthiest 75,000 households, or the top 0.1%. Households would pay an annual 2% tax on every dollar of net worth above $50 million and a 6% tax on every dollar of net worth above $1 billion. Because wealth is so concentrated, this small tax on roughly 75,000 households will bring in $3.75 trillion in revenue over a ten-year period.

OK, so not on entire worth but on net worth that exceeds the threshold. Not yearly income, though. xp yes

With considerable charm, you still have made a choice (Sund4r), Thursday, 20 February 2020 17:27 (six years ago)

Only 70,000 households in America would be affected. Given asset appreciation after inflation is ~6% over long term durations, it would increase their expected wealth doubling time from 12 years to 18 years.

My unscientific analysis is that Warren's performance likely had the most impact, of anyone on that stage, on voters who hadn't already made up their minds about one candidate or another. Like Bernie stayed the course but I can't imagine his debate performance bringing a whole lot of new people to the table.

How any of that translates into actual votes remains to be seen, I guess. As long as Bloomberg eating shit last night translates into Bloomberg eating shit at the polls, I'm happy.

Also, one of the criticisms I've seen of Warren's performance was her tendency to defend Klobuchar, but I don't personally see that as a bad thing. On the one hand, it underscores her decency that she would defend someone she's competing against for the nomination. And on the other hand, although I doubt it was intentional, it's a neat little bit of psychological jiu jitsu to put Klobuchar in the position where she's someone who needs defending or protecting...which is maybe NAGL for a presidential candidate who's trying to appear strong and decisive and all that other shit presidential candidates are supposed to project.

Hot, Now, and Oh-So-Very Wow! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 20 February 2020 19:15 (six years ago)

Bloomberg is definitely going to take a hit in the polls, debate performances this cycle have been reflected in polls pretty clearly

Οὖτις, Thursday, 20 February 2020 19:15 (six years ago)

Harris rising and then tanking, Biden tanking etc.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 20 February 2020 19:16 (six years ago)

heres's a cowardly prediction: i think they will negatively affect bloomberg's numbers, but in a way that is invisible.

gonna just let that thought linger like a dog fart under the bedspread.

*deep breath*

...the reason is that without his murder last night by warren, i think his national poll numbers would continue going up a bit as he continues to spend on ads, and americans continue to be swayed by moving images with sound. but his murder will likely offset that, i think, leaving him around the same or slightly lower. how do i know all this? i spend a lot of time sleeping with my head under the bedspread

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 February 2020 19:16 (six years ago)
