any truth to the concern that Bernie isn't drawing a big enough base?

Anyone who say they know how this will play out is just guessing. being the nominee automatically assigns much of the base to your election. the variables at the margins of this are too hard to know in advance.

I don't believe in any conspiracy bullshit about Mayor Pete - he is a self-made absolute shell of a human. He built that shell all by his goddamn self. I don't like type-A yuppie aspireocrats anymore than the next Millennial, but he seemed reasonable enough to me back in July or so when I knew nothing about the guy. It was the articles about his handling of his little city's big police problem that turned my stomach. So here's hoping that #CIAPete or some better hashtag spreads like fucking wildfire over the next couple weeks, and may the woke Mitt Romney be delivered back to the obscurity from whence he came.

my takeaway from this open primary is that a lot of Republicans really do legitimately like Klobuchar

Sanders won overwhelmingly among ppl age 18-29 (51% to 20% for Buttigieg and 4% for Klobuchar) & age 30-39 (39%).

He lost big among voters 65+ (14%, compared to 32% for Klobuchar), tho in Iowa he'd only got 4% among voters above 65.

A doctor from Jersey got 22 votes. Does she have extended family in a small town there? Did she make one campaign appearance and win some people over? Did a bunch of people put their ballots on a dart board and choose that way?

so weird hearing grown men and women referring to "Amy" and "Mayor Pete" and "Elizabeth.

this has always kind of bugged me too, though i gave everyone a pass for saying "mayor pete" for a few months while we learned how to say "buttigieg" without lol-ing

I doubt that, I may seriously vote for Bill Weld in the GOP primary if the Dem nominee is settled by the time it gets here, and I am not entertaining the idea of not voting for whoever that Dem nominee is

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 05:54 (six years ago)

Voting disruptively in the opposing party's primary is much more fun than voting for the shoo-in incumbent in your own party.

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 06:00 (six years ago)

That’s bound to happen in Washington, where the Dems have now abandoned caucus-driven nominations and there’s no party registration and Donald J Trump is the only republican on the ballot and it’s 100% vote by mail.

I don't think we noted ITT that Pete's campaign is also trying to win a Shorty Award at the same time as the presidency

The Buttigieg campaign applied for a “Best Brand Identity” award lol

Winning was a huge blow to Sanders tonight. Buttigieg lost, which is clearly a win for him, especially losing to Sanders, to whom he's lost twice now, making Sanders' win even more disappointing. Team Sanders needs a big loss to win next time

I'm not giving up on Warren yet. Now that the two media primaries are over, the real campaign begins. Klobuchar and the Booty Judge are gonna get blown the fuck out in South Carolina. I don't even have a theory about what Biden's gonna do.

I'm on Team Warren, but I kinda like that the left has shown ability to triangulate and think strategically, while the center is imploding and fucking everything up for itself. I can't also deny that it improves the case for Sanders' tactics, rather than Warren's implicit argument that the center would come around to her - extremely popular - anti-oligarch policies, if they knew what was best for them. They proved her wrong, they don't know shit.

from the NYT story on Klobuchar:

In her closing message as she barnstormed the state, Ms. Klobuchar began to make more direct appeals to moderates, and even some Republicans. Her campaign began targeting towns in New Hampshire that flipped from President Barack Obama to Donald J. Trump. She sat for an interview with Bret Baier of Fox News on Monday night after speaking to a luncheon of Nashua Rotary Club members earlier in the day.

“I’ve also seen a lot of anger, from people who stayed home in 2016, or independents, or Republicans that maybe voted for the president and are now stepping back and thinking, I don’t know if I did the right thing,” Ms. Klobuchar said at the luncheon, more often a campaign trail stop for Republican candidates than Democrats. “My campaign has always been about reaching out and not shutting people out, but bringing them with me.”

Ms. Klobuchar’s distinct and deliberate appeal to the centrist spirit caught fire with some late-breaking activists.

JoAnne St. John, an influential Democratic activist in Nashua who had long backed Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, was still adrift and without a candidate heading into the final weekend.

“I went to a Buttigieg rally, and at the end of that, I said, ‘I think I’m going to support him,’” she said in an interview on Tuesday. “But I had almost begrudgingly promised some of my very proficient Democrats here in Nashua that I would go see Amy at 3 o’clock. And I did, and I’m glad I did. I saw a woman with power. I’ve seen her many times before, but she has developed her style. I just looked at that woman onstage and I thought, ‘She can do this.’” (Ms. St. John voted for Ms. Klobuchar on Tuesday, and spent most of her day encouraging others to do the same.)

"instead of dropping out" c'mon -- I've been reading a variant on this since last fall when she was near the top.

She's probably finished, but a couple weeks remain.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:33 (six years ago)

The person with the third-most delegates right now should definitely drop out so as to give an easier time to the pissant cop who is about to get his ass handed to him from SC onward.

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:37 (six years ago)

She should stay in as long as she wants, she's running for president and we've had two primaries.

But shame on her for this "my way or the highway" line, what cynical horseshit from a supposed firebrand.

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:39 (six years ago)

yeah like c'mon you're going to have waaaay more influence in a sanders admin than a klob or fuckin Pete.

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:40 (six years ago)

She had a fighting chance at Bernie's lane and chickened out. That was just dumb campaigning.

But going after him now for maintaining his own line is pretty crappy.

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:42 (six years ago)

I think it was pretty clear nobody but Sanders had a chance in the Sanders lane...

Frederik B, Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:43 (six years ago)

That's not true, the two of them were seen as more or less competing for the same votes all year

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:44 (six years ago)

iirc she led him until she blinked on m4a

A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Chooglin (will), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:45 (six years ago)

yes

Plenty of people (including many itt) preferred her to Bernie and she let herself drift before winning their confidence

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:47 (six years ago)

and a good thing, too, better now than 2021

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:50 (six years ago)

She went for a broader coalition, it worked for a while, she had more votes than Sanders. She got under a lot of fire as soon as she outpolled Sanders, before any of the M4A moves, it's a revision of history to claim otherwise. And Sanders has only gone up, like, 7% in the polls as she has faltered, there was a lot of overlap between Warren and the centrists as well.

Also, when she is talking about a turn in recent weeks, isn't it more likely she is aiming at least as much at Biden? He was the one who went seriously negative at Buttigieg, after all.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 12 February 2020 13:57 (six years ago)

She was also losing votes before M4A, when Buttigieg began rising. A big part of the story is the insane centrists being uncomfortable with the wealth tax, etc. Which is a good reason to vote Sanders instead, btw, these people are beyond reason.
