nah, i feel bad for him too; i just feel worse for all of the people he's hurt and angry about all the profit he's reaped from hurting other people.

drug addiction isn't just deserts. dying of cancer isn't just deserts. it's a shitty random proxy for the justice we actually deserve but aren't getting.

I ended up talking to a dude in his early 20s who was Peterson-sympathetic and he brushed off the misogynistic, anti-trans, trad male empowerment shtick as more ephemeral or projection of viewers on to what Peterson's actually saying. I think I was able to make the point that when those views are central it's easier to dismiss, but when it's "not his actual platform" it's more insidious and when you treat those aspects as no big deal you're making a larger statement on what you think is important

He knows what he’s doing, as soon as he is confronted on one of his less savoury views and what that might mean in practice, it’s always “oh I’d never thought of that” or “I didn’t mean that”.

Hard to say exactly what happened off one video... but it sounds like JP and his family wouldn't follow the good medical advice he got, then fled to a country with laxer medical responsibility, then came close to dying because of it.

sorry this was disingenuous. peterson made a name and money for himself by going round telling people what to do, which is always a mucky business, and i think it took place within a context of his own considerable vulnerabilities. it’s not easy to have responsibility for our vulnerabilities so no criticism there, but the pressure put on people to do so looks like projection.

he inserted himself into public life with this schtick - i certainly wouldn’t have heard about this had he not done so - so no i certainly don’t feel bad for him, and although i don’t welcome it, i do think it’s good reason for anyone to ever listen to him.

theres so, so many people who tick every box in this breakdown, across basically every set of ideologies

nb i agree, fuck em all (or, more accurately, the fuck should i care) but the above set of criteria only becomes a bad thing when one considers his specific ideology/message and the overall effect of the morons who have embraced it

i once when having a complete breakdown over an essay i couldnt make myself write followed some very didactic rules from a jordan peterson pdf and it actually helped me get it done. i knew exactly how ghastly jp was, so was fully informed but i think it gave me a real insight into his appeal as a self-help guru for fragile young men and why he's so dangerous.
