Is it bad that I feel bad for him?

Yes.

(includes digression on farting) (Tom D.), Saturday, 8 February 2020 15:58 (six years ago)

I do kinda want him to suffer, but this feels a bit like the combined suffering I've wished on all the anti-progressive charlatans has hit him specifically, and it is a bit much.

Frederik B, Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:00 (six years ago)

And his wife having cancer is straight up awful

Frederik B, Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:01 (six years ago)

Fwiw if Trump were undergoing the same ordeal I'd openly celebrate so my subconscious adherence to Christian archetypes of forgiveness can only go so far.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:02 (six years ago)

I’m glad that he’s unhappy and suffering. Long may it continue.

hyds (gyac), Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:03 (six years ago)

Jordan Peterson has only just come out of an intensive care unit, Mikhaila said. He has neurological damage, and a long way to go to full recovery. He is taking anti-seizure medication and cannot type or walk unaided, but is “on the mend” and his sense of humour has returned.

“He’s smiling again for the first time in months,” she said.

Sorry but it sounds like he’s back to full capacity and never displayed any alarmingly different symptoms.

omar little, Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:09 (six years ago)

I'm a bit surprised the NP is reporting this as news when afaict they're simply regurgitating what his daughter, a widely respected expert on human health, said in a YT video?

rob, Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:11 (six years ago)

'eat only meat' lass sounds like the ideal medical proxy, he's bound to bounce back better than ever

j., Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:12 (six years ago)

Gee I wonder who will he ever blame for the dire care he got in the US. Guess we'll find out in his new book about this and the promo tour etc.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:21 (six years ago)

/Is it bad that I feel bad for him?/

Yes.

yes.

his whole schtick placed a huge amount of moral and mental responsibility on the individual via rigid expectations of how people should behave in order to live the good life. at the risk of being accused of whatever bias it is where we judge ourselves retrospectively to have been correct, this sort of rigid controlling looked even at the time like the behaviour of an addictive personality who needed desperately to control his own issues, projected onto moralising about people and society at large, similar to the way he took some minor canadian campus incidents and turned them into the downfall of the cosmic moral universe.

Fizzles, Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:25 (six years ago)

I know, but I still feel kind of bad for him on some level because fuck a Hammurabi.

Is it bad that I feel bad for him?

― toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul)

nah, i feel bad for him too; i just feel worse for all of the people he's hurt and angry about all the profit he's reaped from hurting other people.

you know my name, look up the number of the beast (rushomancy), Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:44 (six years ago)

drug addiction isn't just deserts. dying of cancer isn't just deserts. it's a shitty random proxy for the justice we actually deserve but aren't getting.

you know my name, look up the number of the beast (rushomancy), Saturday, 8 February 2020 16:46 (six years ago)

Yeah, I'm with you on all that.

i don’t welcome it or anything. i just don’t feel bad for him.

I feel bad for him too tbc, while also finding the whole story O_O.

With considerable charm, you still have made a choice (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:02 (six years ago)

sorry

i don’t welcome it or anything. i just don’t feel bad for him.

sorry this was disingenuous. peterson made a name and money for himself by going round telling people what to do, which is always a mucky business, and i think it took place within a context of his own considerable vulnerabilities. it’s not easy to have responsibility for our vulnerabilities so no criticism there, but the pressure put on people to do so looks like projection.

he inserted himself into public life with this schtick - i certainly wouldn’t have heard about this had he not done so - so no i certainly don’t feel bad for him, and although i don’t welcome it, i do think it’s good reason for anyone to ever listen to him.

Fizzles, Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:04 (six years ago)

or some version of that sentence which reads i hope he disappears from public life and deals with his shit in the privacy of his own world.

The right is starting to get better at comedy and it’s making lefties nervous

wee jim o’conor (wins), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:29 (six years ago)

i dunno i couldn't get past the roid monkey interviewing him

The same people he always does - women, trans people, the left. Can’t deny I’m raising the eyebrow a bit at all the “I feel bad for him” type sentiments itt. Fella’s literally mainstreaming conservative Christianity and telling men it’s not your fault, it’s those evil progressives to blame. Introducing people to far worse. No, I revise my previous post; not only do I hope it continues, I hope it gets worse.

hyds (gyac), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:34 (six years ago)

Yeah, but his wife is dying?

Frederik B, Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:39 (six years ago)

from a purely felicific point of view it's better to wish JP dies than suffers

Todd Phillips, party auteur (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:39 (six years ago)

I ended up talking to a dude in his early 20s who was Peterson-sympathetic and he brushed off the misogynistic, anti-trans, trad male empowerment shtick as more ephemeral or projection of viewers on to what Peterson's actually saying. I think I was able to make the point that when those views are central it's easier to dismiss, but when it's "not his actual platform" it's more insidious and when you treat those aspects as no big deal you're making a larger statement on what you think is important

caucus fricked iowa account (mh), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:40 (six years ago)

The plausible deniability, flimsy as it is, has always worked in his favour. It’s why his supporters have only that argument to fall back on. He knows what he’s doing, as soon as he is confronted on one of his less savoury views and what that might mean in practice, it’s always “oh I’d never thought of that” or “I didn’t mean that”.

hyds (gyac), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:43 (six years ago)

This part is eyebrow-raising, though:

_He is being treated at a clinic in Russia after being repeatedly misdiagnosed at several hospitals in North America, she said._

Yeah this is more than a little weird. Multiple North American doctors couldn’t pick up on the fact that he was addicted to Benzos and the only solution was for him to fly to Russia for proper medical care?

circa1916, Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:48 (six years ago)

It’s not some rare disease and why Russia of all places?

circa1916, Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:50 (six years ago)

That's definitely a major part of where my O_O was coming from.

With considerable charm, you still have made a choice (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:52 (six years ago)

I mean, I realize Russia has not been infected with postmodern neo-Marxism to the same degree but

With considerable charm, you still have made a choice (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:53 (six years ago)

Maybe only Moscow doctors can diagnose postmodern neo-Marxism at this point. All North American medicine has become noseblind to it

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 February 2020 17:59 (six years ago)

you know my name, look up the number of the beast (rushomancy), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:01 (six years ago)

US clinics maybe wanted to do a lot of snowflake shit about exploring the reasons for his addiction instead of force feeding him 10 pounds of venison and telling him to man the fuck up

Todd Phillips, party auteur (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:02 (six years ago)

The plausible deniability, flimsy as it is, has always worked in his favour.

GAH it always does with guys like this! it's their superpower -- to always back away from something if they get called out.

I also don't understand why he needed to go to Russia to treat his benzo addiction. why is he in a coma? actually i don't care that much. i don't want him to suffer or die but i also reserve my sympathy for strangers who are not ideologically repulsive.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:04 (six years ago)

in former Soviet Russia benzos depend on YOU

Todd Phillips, party auteur (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:04 (six years ago)

sorry to repeat myself, but there's no reason to take his daughter's narrative at face value; these people are literally con artists. Maybe they're the kind of grifters who believe their own con but still

rob, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:06 (six years ago)

agree
she is the beef diet promoter? how can anyone take these people seriously.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:09 (six years ago)

Yeah I’m somewhere in between “this smells like bullshit” and “of course Jordan Peterson would say all the doctors are wrong and get some possibly shady medical treatment overseas”.

circa1916, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:10 (six years ago)

yes, the beef diet that famously cured...her father's autoimmune disease, hmm

rob, Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:11 (six years ago)

Beef Diet is an amusing throwaway band name, I'll give her that

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:12 (six years ago)

I always pity and feel bad for ppl like peterson bc they are always so obviously consumed by demons and living in their own personal hell, hate themselves & their lives. And often the thing that is the cause of their suffering (petersons case: feeling inadequate) they mistake for he solution (i must create even more rules to measure up to and become strong thru tyranny of will)

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Saturday, 8 February 2020 18:17 (six years ago)

Peterson in a coma, who cares, who cares, if it’s really serious.
