this is like that thing going around trashing a bunch of lyrics from wicked including "bridges you've crossed you never knew you crossed until you crossed" -- there are a lot of horrible lines but that isn't one of them. repetition for emphasis and effect is a valid writing device, and doesn't stop being so just because the guy who sucks decided to use it

The best possible response to Trump is to just say "Shut up, asshole," and go right back to talking about what you were talking about. Sanders is one-note enough to make this work.

Not convinced that's a winning strategy tbh, partly because of how disconnected it seems from the pseudo-persona Bloomberg is going for. Trump otoh is a meming troll so when he indulges it serves to cement his narrative 'coherence'.

I assumed Tara McGowan, architect of ACRONYM/Shadow (to most), given AP's latest piece

The people who said they were going to beat Donald Trump in 2020 by emulating his supposedly highly sophisticated digital targeting operation have instead emulated Trump by turning their campaigns into a lucrative grift for a small group of well-connected party insiders. And, because this is the Democrats we are talking about, they did so by burning enormous sums of money that could have done untold good, politically and strategically, had they been used for just about anything else.

Would you consider military force for a humanitarian intervention?

Sanders's Answer
Yes.

Would you consider military force to pre-empt an Iranian or North Korean nuclear or missile test?

Sanders's Answer
Yes.

Mordy, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:02 (six years ago)

ok this answer is kinda hilarious tho

Should the United States Embassy in Israel be moved from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv?

Sanders's Answer
Not as a first step. But it would be on the table if Israel continues to take steps, such as settlement expansion, expulsions and home demolitions, that undermine the chances for a peace agreement.

he wouldn't move back the embassy except as a punishment

Mordy, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:04 (six years ago)

liz says something similar!

If Israel takes steps counter to peace, I am prepared to freeze or reverse the limited embassy functions that have moved to Jerusalem.

where did this CW come from? this is the first time i'm seeing the idea - before i thought the sanders position was "i would move it back" iow contingent on nothing. this is far more clever imo. moving it back immediately is unlikely to generate particularly useful or positive responses but you also don't want to be like "no i guess trump + bibi just win this round" so predicating it on punishment even tho that seems like a silly ideological approach (either you think it should be there or shouldn't) but it does serve this pragmatic political purpose.

Mordy, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:08 (six years ago)

disappointing obviously, but might keep AIPAC off his ass til September

it's like nobody has encountered a metaphor in their lives, not everything is a literal statement particularly in oratory, jesus fucking christ. and the basic sentiment -- fundamentally, what kind of government are we; the answer to that question influences/determines the answer to all other policy questions -- is not only broadly correct, but one that basically everyone in the field is running on (with different answers on what the best kind of government therefore is)

is this where I say that while pete sucks, the mass dunking on that "the shape of our democracy is the issue that affects every other issue" quote is completely fucking ridiculous. it's like nobody has encountered a metaphor in their lives, not everything is a literal statement particularly in oratory, jesus fucking christ. and the basic sentiment -- fundamentally, what kind of government are we; the answer to that question influences/determines the answer to all other policy questions -- is not only broadly correct, but one that basically everyone in the field is running on (with different answers on what the best kind of government therefore is)

Imo, it is broadly correct but also banal and vague. It is a statement that literally any politician in any democracy could make and doesn't amount to very much unless they are actually giving their answers on what the best kind of government is. Using lots of pretty words to say very little is p much what I get out of PB every time he speaks, which is why I rmde at this.

"Probably just a coincidence that the candidates arguing most against Medicare for All are the ones losing"

"Biden is America's embarrassing grandpa"

"lol everybody up there isn't even trying to hide how much they hate Pete"

"OK, Steyer gets the guillotine last after being for reparations"

"The billionaire should not be the second best person on that stage. That tells you everything about the rest of those fucking schmucks."

"Pete's meaningless gibberish is gonna give me a stroke"

what in the hell

I could do without the Buttigieg as rat meme that's picking up steam of late.

― 🚶‍♂️💨 (Eric H.), Friday, February 7, 2020 6:42 AM (fourteen minutes ago)

Between Tuesday and Thursday, I saw a bunch of memes on the theme on Buttigieg as rat. These were based on the posters' perceptions that his declaring that "By all indications, we are going on to New Hampshire victorious," when no reliable indications of results existed at all, due entirely to the failure of implementation of an incredibly incompetent phone app funded by the local party and Buttigieg himself, the security of which was being actively compromised over and over again by a local Buttigieg campaign lead posting PINs on Twitter, had the potential appearance of political ratfucking.

I did not see any memes about Buttigieg engaging physically in sexual intercourse. If these were common, feel free to link them here so I can know some sites or posters to avoid on purpose instead of by chance.

The last "Pete as rat" meme I encountered was the Cinnabon one from the Boonta Vista guy. This rounded off the joking as far as my experience went, and is the sole citation for my reference to eating like a rat upthread.

I have never in my life been aware of a notion that the coitus of cis gay men resembles the coitus of rats, and if I had, I would have avoided that construction.

Having seen rats boning IRL, I still fail to see what the comparison centres on. To anyone who is offended by an assumption of a derogatory homosexual connotation in my post, my apologies, but I ask that you please FP one of my previous "4 the lulz" posts that has conditioned you to expect gross homophobia from me, instead of this genuine moment of ignorance of an existing meme.

what they think is acceptable to say about anybody who might take a delegate or two from the bern

I learnt about Senator Sanders' existence when James Adomian added Bernie to his range of comedic impressions, and it's less than a week since I last said in this thread that Senator Warren is my preference for President, so this doesn't even vaguely track.

Tom, I've said before that I value your presence and perspective on political threads. It's nearly always a bummer when you have rage-y and kinda-sorta-nigh-libel-ish outbursts at folks in whatever threads. Your real life is no doubt super-busy rn, and fuck knows everyone here is hanging on to frazzled nerves every day. But if you ever have a chance to slow down and express longer thoughts on party processes or the respective value of individual candidates, I'd enjoy seeing them, and I expect they'd make better contributions to the discourse than 90% of everyone's posts itt.

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Saturday, 8 February 2020 08:05 (six years ago)

‘Fuck like a rat’ joke read as weird gay slam to this old too, but i often interpret u to be a channy edgedork so i figure im just old
