is this where I say that while pete sucks, the mass dunking on that "the shape of our democracy is the issue that affects every other issue" quote is completely fucking ridiculous. it's like nobody has encountered a metaphor in their lives, not everything is a literal statement particularly in oratory, jesus fucking christ. and the basic sentiment -- fundamentally, what kind of government are we; the answer to that question influences/determines the answer to all other policy questions -- is not only broadly correct, but one that basically everyone in the field is running on (with different answers on what the best kind of government therefore is)

the claim that you can only trust the Dem moderates to make reasonable promises *and* deliver on them--a line regurgitated by everyone who is allowed to be the "liberal" on TV--should perhaps be reconsidered in light of a major Clinton backer's bullshit empire of deceit

not really, the only questionable part of it is "the" (there are probably more than one) but everything else is fine, writing-wise

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:44 (six years ago)

he's going for poetry, and repeating the word "issue" makes it feel like a same-word rhyme

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:46 (six years ago)

which would be relevant if it were, in fact, a poem

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:48 (six years ago)

this is like that thing going around trashing a bunch of lyrics from wicked including "bridges you've crossed you never knew you crossed until you crossed" -- there are a lot of horrible lines but that isn't one of them. repetition for emphasis and effect is a valid writing device, and doesn't stop being so just because the guy who sucks decided to use it

The best possible response to Trump is to just say "Shut up, asshole," and go right back to talking about what you were talking about. Sanders is one-note enough to make this work.

Not convinced that's a winning strategy tbh, partly because of how disconnected it seems from the pseudo-persona Bloomberg is going for. Trump otoh is a meming troll so when he indulges it serves to cement his narrative 'coherence'.

I assumed Tara McGowan, architect of ACRONYM/Shadow (to most), given AP's latest piece

The people who said they were going to beat Donald Trump in 2020 by emulating his supposedly highly sophisticated digital targeting operation have instead emulated Trump by turning their campaigns into a lucrative grift for a small group of well-connected party insiders. And, because this is the Democrats we are talking about, they did so by burning enormous sums of money that could have done untold good, politically and strategically, had they been used for just about anything else.

Would you consider military force for a humanitarian intervention?

Sanders's Answer
Yes.

Would you consider military force to pre-empt an Iranian or North Korean nuclear or missile test?

Sanders's Answer
Yes.

Mordy, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:02 (six years ago)

ok this answer is kinda hilarious tho

Should the United States Embassy in Israel be moved from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv?

Sanders's Answer
Not as a first step. But it would be on the table if Israel continues to take steps, such as settlement expansion, expulsions and home demolitions, that undermine the chances for a peace agreement.

he wouldn't move back the embassy except as a punishment

Mordy, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:04 (six years ago)

liz says something similar!

If Israel takes steps counter to peace, I am prepared to freeze or reverse the limited embassy functions that have moved to Jerusalem.

where did this CW come from? this is the first time i'm seeing the idea - before i thought the sanders position was "i would move it back" iow contingent on nothing. this is far more clever imo. moving it back immediately is unlikely to generate particularly useful or positive responses but you also don't want to be like "no i guess trump + bibi just win this round" so predicating it on punishment even tho that seems like a silly ideological approach (either you think it should be there or shouldn't) but it does serve this pragmatic political purpose.

Mordy, Friday, 7 February 2020 19:08 (six years ago)

disappointing obviously, but might keep AIPAC off his ass til September

Imo, it is broadly correct but also banal and vague. It is a statement that literally any politician in any democracy could make and doesn't amount to very much unless they are actually giving their answers on what the best kind of government is. Using lots of pretty words to say very little is p much what I get out of PB every time he speaks, which is why I rmde at this.
