I could do without the Buttigieg as rat meme that's picking up steam of late.

one of my friend's husbands is a politician who thinks the real reason we should be worried about a legit buttiggreufug candidacy is his senior adviser lis smith, who seems to have caused all of our problems http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/02/lis-smith-pete-buttigieg-2020-campaign.html

i still don't really see it but i'm concerned

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:01 (six years ago)

lol it's early and i think i suggested my friend has multiple husbands

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:01 (six years ago)

If you can't just choose one...

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:02 (six years ago)

Fred it would be worrying if we had run-offs but we don't

Bernie is outpolling Trump in the hypothetical general, and I suspect that gap wld widen after nomination when people see how deftly he swats down eggs-in-one-basket "Socialist!" attack... I think most Dem hedging on Bernie has to do with a caricature of his policies and that exposure will mitigate that

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:06 (six years ago)

Well, we'll see.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:08 (six years ago)

Right, but 538 shows about a 1 in 4 chance of nobody getting a majority, and then it's pretty bad if Sanders can't create a compromise? Except on their podcast they speculated that in that case it would probably be Warren, so I guess I should be happy...

Frederik B, Friday, 7 February 2020 14:09 (six years ago)

He's never faced an opponent like DJT before.

fwiw the bernie hedging I’m exposed to is based on his inability to prevent his supporters from being public dickheads and the fact that the GOP are absolutely drooling over the prospect of running against him

El Tomboto, Friday, 7 February 2020 14:11 (six years ago)

He's never faced an opponent like DJT before.

FWIW the Trump camp has been trying out anti-Bernie messaging recently and it's the same rote Victims Of Communism shit ppl have been trotting out since forever

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:14 (six years ago)

I really don't know what else they'll have? he can't outflank him on populist terms, they'll probably be reduced to weakly coded antisemitism and whose wife is hotter

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:16 (six years ago)

i think bernie would pretty obviously kick trumps ass across multiple continents at least rhetorically, whether that translates to an electoral victory god who fuckin knows. but the republicans seem to not have the shit to smear him with

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:18 (six years ago)

anyway i am donating to the sanders campaign this morning

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:19 (six years ago)

xp I've been impressed w/ Bernie's messaging on this front, he's handling it better than in 2016, fine-tuning the line that "we *already* have socialism, for corporations"

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:19 (six years ago)

he can't outflank him on populist terms, they'll probably be reduced to weakly coded antisemitism and whose wife is hotter

I thought you were referring to Trump lol

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:25 (six years ago)

who knows maybe Bernie will show he can't take a punch when it gets ridiculous, which it soon will

but the way he's campaigned so far it's hard to imagine Trump landing many

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:29 (six years ago)

The best possible response to Trump is to just say "Shut up, asshole," and go right back to talking about what you were talking about. Sanders is one-note enough to make this work.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:37 (six years ago)

something tells me Bernie has heard "communists are bad" attacks before

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:40 (six years ago)

one thing I've heard coworkers say is that Bernie comes off "too angry" which is like...uhhh yeah, I'm glad he's angry! one of my least favorite things about politics is the knowledge that our representatives are all buddies behind closed doors who treat their jobs like sports to be won or lost, while you've got one side strongarming their way into rapist Supreme Court justices, leaders who are above the law, and hundreds of environmental protections dismantled solely for the benefit of Republican donors, and then you've got guys like Biden & Schumer just going "aww brush it off, we'll get 'em next time, you know I really think Republicans are gonna come to their senses about this"

frogbs, Friday, 7 February 2020 14:45 (six years ago)

if you are running for president right now and are *not* angry gtfo

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 7 February 2020 14:46 (six years ago)

I think Trump’s line on Bernie is going to be that he’s a crazy socialist who’s going to put the government in charge of everything and wreck the economy.

o. nate, Friday, 7 February 2020 14:49 (six years ago)

And take away your guns the day after inauguration
And release all the terrorists from prison
And let Mexicans kill your family
And make it illegal to talk to your doctor

He would say that about any democrat

Angry Non-Democrat Socialist is about the best candidate one can hope for

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 7 February 2020 15:10 (six years ago)

Bernie should take "Shup Up Asshole" and run with it—buttons hats stickers etc

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 7 February 2020 15:19 (six years ago)

Whether they’d say it about any Democrat and whether people would believe it about any candidate are two different questions.

Mordy, Friday, 7 February 2020 15:22 (six years ago)

he can't outflank him on populist terms

He most certainly can as long as you understand that in the American political context "populism" means "siding with the white working man against the socialist elite class who distribute free money and phones to their darker-skinned minions from the windows of their electric limousines while you struggle alone."

I don't think the electability case for Sanders is that he'll appeal to people for whom this kind of "populism" is appealing and who would otherwise vote for Trump; it's that idealistic voters under 35 will show up and vote for the Democrat who otherwise wouldn't vote at all. It's not a crazy case!

come on man.

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Friday, 7 February 2020 15:28 (six years ago)

here's a public policy poll that found that 41% of trump voters believed that hillary clinton is "the devil" and 17% aren't sure one way or the other

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Friday, 7 February 2020 15:31 (six years ago)

they'd certainly believe it about Warren despite her indulgence of apocalyptic Israel

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 7 February 2020 15:46 (six years ago)

Last time I asked who people would vote for if it came down to Buttigieg and one other, people were overwhelmingly pro biden.

What about if it came down to Buttigieg vs Bloomberg?

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 7 February 2020 15:49 (six years ago)

caek, you should make that into an especially depressing poll thread

Doctor Casino, Friday, 7 February 2020 16:04 (six years ago)

that'd be fuck Blue no matter who

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 7 February 2020 16:12 (six years ago)

I’d have to go Buttigieg over Bloomberg.

treeship., Friday, 7 February 2020 16:14 (six years ago)

yeah, gotta go with pete's consultant-molded milquetoast-itude to bloomberg's genuinely regressive social policies

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Friday, 7 February 2020 16:17 (six years ago)

...followed by armed struggle

for those who want it

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 7 February 2020 16:26 (six years ago)

armed struggle for some, miniature american flags for others

gbx, Friday, 7 February 2020 16:44 (six years ago)

really some nightmare scenarios become possible if biden doesn't cling on as the centrist oaf.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:05 (six years ago)

nightmare scenarios such as... Buttigeig/Klobuchar 2020?

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:08 (six years ago)

such as trump cruising to re-election

Bernie's custom campaign shirt will have a silhouette of Prince and say "Donnie, Don't Talk to Russia"

ill fuckin put a paste on those (Neanderthal), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:13 (six years ago)

is this where I say that while pete sucks, the mass dunking on that "the shape of our democracy is the issue that affects every other issue" quote is completely fucking ridiculous. it's like nobody has encountered a metaphor in their lives, not everything is a literal statement particularly in oratory, jesus fucking christ. and the basic sentiment -- fundamentally, what kind of government are we; the answer to that question influences/determines the answer to all other policy questions -- is not only broadly correct, but one that basically everyone in the field is running on (with different answers on what the best kind of government therefore is)

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Friday, 7 February 2020 17:29 (six years ago)

inspirational stuff
