l.a. has oaxacan, d.f., yucatecan, mexico city, and all the northern mexico you can shake a stick at.
To be fair, you have to look for it in Texas... in Houston, for instance, forget it. You'll get red sauce slapped all over everything whether you like it or not, and fortunately for their businesses, almost everyone likes it. Austin has Austin food -- you get black beans slapped all over everything whether you like it or not. San Antonio is the real Mexican food destination.

i still dream about them
Hot dog - mustard, relish
Polish - deli mustard, grilled onions
Weisswurst or Brat - sauerkraut, deli mustard
Merguez - harissa/mustard, grilled red peppers

This thread has officially derailed my afternoon. Well done.

first, chicago has the best pizza? C'mon, but we don't need this to turn into a NYC pizza thread.
But I'd like to talk more about NYC Mexican. It's true that for a long time all you had were mission-style imposters, cheap-o joints and other non-authentic stuff, but the last few years has seen an explosion of mexican food, just in time for me to move to Queens. Not to mention Red Hook Huaraches...
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)
i remember nyc mexican food in the 80s - pure fucking garbage
― velko, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)
Chicago Tribune
Let's have some proof of that. (Not saying it couldn't happen.)
Hard to find data. This is all I could find in brief research:
CHICAGO — As the Chicago area’s Mexican community has grown, so too has the variety of Mexican fare at the city’s restaurants. Looking at regional dishes on local menus is often a best indicator of where Mexican immigrants hail from. Still, through a Web site operated by the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, we learned that Michoacan, Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, the State of Mexico and Oaxaca all contribute a high percentage of their emigrants to Chicago.
^the site that references is in Spanish and not very well laid out.

To more directly address the thread question: hot dogs are fucking nasty, and who cares if you put ketchup of mustard or relish or the precious sweaty dewdrops from the breasts of the Goddess of Pork and Beef Byproducts on it, hot dogs are still just nasty. New York style... some other style... shove it in your hole and then shut it because what just went in there is totally disgusting.
Also, Chicago-style pizza isn't pizza and should be disqualified entirely, thus ending the debate.

Also in Chicago, while I didn't get deep-dish pizza, I went to Crust. It was no Motorino.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)
I would also like to apply for the job of collecting the sweaty dew drops from the breasts of the Goddess of Pork and Beef Byproducts.

Hey maybe we can decide which city has the best pizza by figuring out which has the largest number of Italians, that seems like it would be accurate
― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
After all, everyone knows Italians make the best pizza.
Not true. In my experience, Mexicans make the best pizza.
― Two Will Get You Three (B.L.A.M.), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

I used to live somewhere with very few local food options (thanks, Satmars!) and so I was reduced to ordering ziti from a pizza place run by Mexicans. It was pretty much inedible unless you were actually starving. I mean, the pizza wasn't going to win any awards, either, but terrible ziti is REALLY BAD.
― But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:59 (sixteen years ago)
i've lived in texas, california, chicago, and new york, and i prefer great tacos to great hot dogs. hot dogs vs. hamburgers would be a better poll, and harder to pick between.
― mr. me too (rockapads), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 22:00 (sixteen years ago)
great thread. wish i could read the whole thing. highlight was someone calling people who prefer tacos a "cumdad".
Laurel, after college I will probably never eat baked ziti again. SCARD 4 LYFE.

I was reduced to ordering ziti from a pizza place run by Mexicans
So amazingly otm. I'd never even dealt with the possibility before I moved to a big city with a lot of hole-in-the-wall food places, but never eat food from a place that serves two kinds of ethnic cuisine. Pizza, for these purposes, counts as ethnic. Do not eat pizza from a place that also serves Mexican food, or Mexican food from a place that also serves Chinese food, or Thai food from a place that also serves pizza, or bagels from a place with Chinese characters on the awning, or tamales from a place that also serves fried chicken, and if you eat pizza from a place that also serves Mexican food and is run by Chinese people, you should be ashamed of yourself for making your parents fly up to visit you in the hospital.
