It's somewhat amusing watching a bunch of people who by-and-large define themselves by their divergence from the mainstream bend over backwards to invent nefarious reasons why a significant portion of the mainstream wouldn't agree with them on something rather than chalking it up to people having divergent value systems/priorities combined with the human propensity to fuck up everything we touch.

we elected a president who was /head/ of the cia and he was somehow still better than his shithead non-cia son

it's a low bar

New statement from the @iowademocrats responding to @TomPerez. It seems to be pushing back on the idea that Perez can even request the recanvass. "Should any presidential campaign in compliance with the Iowa Delegate Selection Plan request a recanvass, the IDP is prepared." pic.twitter.com/jVDlQXs5oJ

anyway the good news for everyone is that the actual Sanders campaign isn't doing anything (AFAICT) to stoke the insanity and if anything is working to undercut it and emphasize the need to move on

My assumption is that there have always been errors in the Iowa caucus, given the complexities of the system. We're just more likely to know about them this time around because a) the raw vote totals are now being made public, which is leading people to analyze the data more closely, b) social media makes it easier to disseminate on-the-ground reports and photos of precinct worksheets, and c) there are a lot more viable candidates, and so more potential for error in each precinct. But I'd be surprised if caucuses in the past weren't faulty in similar ways that just never came to light.

Pete's camp apparently whinging about how SDEs were counted for satellite caucuses. Hopefully he gets wiped out in the next couple states before they even return his calls.

The Best Little Boy in the World is gonna get crushed in NH and especially SC, I think. AZ's harder to read but I would think Sanders' labor credentials and latino outreach will help him there.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 6 February 2020 19:26 (six years ago)

i don't think he's getting crushed in NH and if biden does badly there too then he won't get completely wiped out in SC

tbf getting anything higher than fourth was a victory for Buttigieg and -- yes, I'm vaguely defending him here -- he was vague about what victory he won

The semi-sentient alien gas being from planet Middlebrow was expressing its victory in finally throwing off the prison of its human skin-suit.

Because mistakes and general bumblefuckery will occur throughout the dem primaries (because this is an endeavor being conducted by human beings), it may behoove any and all official spokespeople, in the course of demands by the press and public to explain how such mistakes could possibly have occurred, to have on hand a random assortment of 5-10 much bigger fuck-ups committed by the POTUS which they can simply recite as a response. It's a bottomless well so this tack should easily carry them through all the way to November.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Thursday, 6 February 2020 19:30 (six years ago)

Extremely weird shit, the campaign has incentive to move on but any adult with a brain should want basic answers about Iowa.

We HAVE the goddamn answers! Sanders and Buttigieg got roughly the same number of votes, and did better than all the others! Warren came in a solid third and showed her campaign is for now still viable! Biden did substantially worse than expected! Those are the basic answers! They are not in dispute! Whether Buttigieg or Sanders got a half a percent more or less than the others is not important! asdfshdjflas;hdljhdskhdkjg

I think I missed those posts. But yes, the 2012 Republican caucus is a good example. I honestly don't remember hearing very much about that at the time, so maybe the difference is that everyone's nerves are constantly frayed now (and some of us are on Twitter too much).

I refuse to believe that Tom Perez or anyone working for him could organize a "piss-up in a brewery," as our British friends say, but the public call to "recanvass" is at least one for chaos. If you support any Democrat you should run him out of town on a rail.

Harpootlian said a third-place finish would make Biden “the comeback kid,” Bill Clinton’s description of himself after the then-governor of Arkansas battled to a second-place finish here in 1992.
“Then he goes to Nevada — and then thank God he comes to a normal state,” he said, referring to the fourth-voting state, South Carolina.
