Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:39 (six years ago)

i believe he means "do something that will stop bernie being declared the winner today"

bernie is likely to win the nomination the "evil dnc will do anything to stop him" stuff is nagl

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:40 (six years ago)

god yes I am so sick of seeing that on FB

let's talk about gecs baby (sleeve), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:40 (six years ago)

like do what you want but if you want to win voters i'd suggest cutting out all the conspiracy and outsider shit it won't play if you're serious about uniting the party behind sanders

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:40 (six years ago)

All Bernie really has to say is "Well, the delegate results are still up in the air, but it looks like we won the most votes--on to New Hampshire."

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:42 (six years ago)

What I get out of that Perez tweet: "Waiter, I don't like how this was cooked. Take it back to the kitchen and tell them to do it right."

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:42 (six years ago)

almost certainly the correct subtext of the perez tweet is "this whole rollout has been a clusterfuck that makes Dems look bad but there's no reason for it bc we have a paper trail we can calculate it exactly let's take our time and do just that"

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:43 (six years ago)

i don't believe there's a conspiracy in iowa, but this is literally the worst possible time for the DNC to throw chum in the water. they've had all week to express concern. pretending that the DNC is doing a good job doesn't serve anyone.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:44 (six years ago)

no one including the DNC thinks they're doing a good job. but you know who this will reflect poorly on ultimately? whoever wins the nomination and becomes the head of the party.

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:45 (six years ago)

I don't understand what a recanvass is *in the context of a caucus*.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:45 (six years ago)

probably just recount all the results from each caucus is my guess

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:46 (six years ago)

there's pretty strong evidence at this point that we won't be able to reconstruct the true results from the paper trail, because it's obviously very close, and there are examples of obviously wrong *paper* results (not just transcription errors as the results were passed up the chain).

― Mordy, Thursday, February 6, 2020 12:45 PM (one minute ago) bookmarkflaglink

do you want people to pretend it's not happening?

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:47 (six years ago)

guess what the caucus system is extremely stupid. luckily it's only a couple stupid states that do them.

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:47 (six years ago)

you know who this will reflect poorly on ultimately?

you are forgetting that the next four months will wipe every vestige of any memory of this from the public's mind, which has very poor retention for such details.

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:47 (six years ago)

actually yeah i think if ppl weren't so fucking crazy about the results of one tiny undemocratic primary in a tiny unrepresentative state it wouldn't be such a big deal. xxp

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:47 (six years ago)

I find it exceptionally hard to see how a recanvass will fix it all https://t.co/O8fhYeICSF

— Nate Cohn (@Nate_Cohn) February 6, 2020

this isn't going to help.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:48 (six years ago)

aimless: making a big deal out of how incompetent the DNC is and how corrupt they are will inevitably influence how ppl think about them and it will ultimately bite whoever leads the party

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:48 (six years ago)

yeah people should stop making a big deal about how the DNC are incompetent and corrupt

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:49 (six years ago)

All Bernie really has to say is "Well, the delegate results are still up in the air, but it looks like we won the most votes--on to New Hampshire."

This is more or less what I'm expecting.

And this thinking depressed turnout for Clinton in 2016

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:52 (six years ago)

in b4 "clinton depressed turnout on her own"

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:53 (six years ago)

anyway, what a clusterfuck, glad we're all experts here

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:53 (six years ago)

I'm already depressed.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:53 (six years ago)

National media and the three top finishers have moved on to New Hampshire. It hasn't fazed me after Tuesday.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:56 (six years ago)

Wasn't the primary between Hilary and Barack rife with issues too?

ill fuckin put a paste on those (Neanderthal), Thursday, 6 February 2020 17:56 (six years ago)

by all means the primary should move on. purely in delegate terms this is not going to make any difference.

but "everyone pretend the DNC is good at facilitating the improvement of the democratic party's political platform, financial health and electoral chances because it's an election year" feels like "now is not the time to politicize a tragedy" after a shooting spree. _now_ is exactly the time, because it not now then we all know it will be the same next time.

people are going to continue failing upwards unless they're held to account precisely when other people are paying attention.

Fixed that for u

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:01 (six years ago)

Dems really need to quit overplaying the Iowa caucus as a major crisis. It's playing into a narrative of incompetency of the entire party, rather than that one state's DNC. It pulls focus.

Obviously it's important to fix the issue and determine the accurate totals and find a way to avoid it in the future. It's not a "non-issue" per se.

But fellow Dems reacting like this is a humongous crisis that will sink 2020 if WE DON'T GET ANSWERS SOON aren't helping. The bungled caucus happened. When things like that happen, the right thing to do is slow things down, take them apart, and make sure to certify the result and that you declare the right delegate counts for each person.

The tradeoff is we don't get the instant gratification we usually get with results, but oh well.

If I were to believe some crazy Dems, 2020 is over due to Iowa and impeachment acquittal. I ain't got time for Nihilist Eeyore

ill fuckin put a paste on those (Neanderthal), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:03 (six years ago)

Just as a reminder, every hotly contested presidential nomination race gets ugly. In 20th century sports-inspired political parlance, the gloves always come off quickly and it's bare knuckles right up to the convention.

failing upwards

over the past week this phrase finally qualified for the β€œwords, usages” thread, congratulations everyone

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:04 (six years ago)

When I see rampant speculation about buttigieg stealing the election I def think this is some constructive criticism that will make the party stronger

Mordy, Thursday, 6 February 2020 18:04 (six years ago)

This literally never works in any context ever.

What DOES work is sober post-mortems where the people who fucked up feel empowered to admit to their mistakes without fear of being pilloried, which allows people to actually own up to their contributions to the problem rather than managing their defensiveness.
