when i think of roman punishments i don't really think of banishment anyway - that feels like more of a greek thing. for me the late roman republic way of doing it would be the proscription - you put someone's name on a list and it's immediately legal for anybody to kill them and take all their shit. classy people, those romans.

Insofar as there was a point to my facetious, second-thought question, I think that was it: the quick class associations people like to pin on cultural and aesthetic tendencies often tend not to have that much to do with, you know, class, esp since that does depend on a variety of factors.
