interdicto means forbidden, which applies to actions not people

you want something more like banishment or casting out or being sent into exile, masculine singular gerundive form thereof

banished: expulsus, exemptus, excisus, profugus, extorris, ejectus
exiled: profugus, extorris
driven out: expulsus, eiectus, ejectus, extorris, exactus

other possible verbs (mostly with the suggestion of being physically chucked out): eructo, propello, apstergo, sepono, paello, pello, excutio, emitto

since banishment was an actual legal thing in the republic there must be a correct technical term of legal art, since the roman entity was a very legalistic one (even in the empire except by then murder was probably the preferred option) (i can't find my v small latin dictionary bcz lol a bulb isn't working in the right part of my flat) and plus on-line latin research is notoriously fucking useless

Makes sense, mark, although one may be interdictum from posting.

read some effing ovid:
http://web.colby.edu/ovid-censorship/exile/history-of-roman-exile/

(turns out "aquae et ignis Interdictio" is a banishment-related thing tho it has a heavily symbolic framing)

mark s, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:36 (six years ago)

Tbf is being permabanned (from posting) the same thing as being banished? Lurking remains an option for the permabanned of ILX whereas banishment from Rome is more than just a sentence of non-participation.

the phrase "Codex Justinianus, PDF format" is (a) intrinsically amusing and (b) dragging me further down a rabbit hole i shd possibly be resisting *jojns the federalist society*

mark s, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:49 (six years ago)

I don't see what the problem is here, once Comrade Alphabet has racked up enough FPs he'll be banned, you, of all people, should know that, Fred.

it may be that there isn't an exact equivalent, pom (the translation of peter rabbit into egyptian hieroglyphs has several footnotes admitting to approxations)

LBI - I am not trolling actually.

The vast majority of posts from myself (as I was called to be thread banned by a poster I hardly interact with, a tantrum for real) on the Berners thread has been info as we get it from twitter. Mordy posted the Iowa turn out info many hours after I posted the same on the Berners thread. I followed the story first thing by using ilx and twitter.

Fwiw there isn't one in French and Romanian either, so that would be my amateurish guess as well.

The cognate verb 'bannir' comes close but it doesn't serve quite the same purposes in French.

Anyway, props for the quality chime-in.

hyds (gyac), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 20:53 (six years ago)

But why in the square? You went there when you wanted to do something. It was all thick slabs of slate and water trickled all day out of tiny pinholes and there was a queer smell of stale water there. And behind the door of one of the closets there was a drawing in red pencil of a bearded man in a Roman dress with a brick in each hand and underneath was the name of the drawing:

Balbus was building a wall.

Some fellow had drawn it there for a cod. It had a funny face but it was very like a man with a beard. And on the wall of another closet there was written in backhand in beautiful writing:

Julius Cæsar wrote The Calico Belly.

Perhaps that was why they were there because it was a place where some fellows wrote things for cod.

I will sodomize you and face-fuck you,
bottom Aurelius and catamite Furius,
you who think, because my poems
are sensitive, that I have no shame.
For it's proper for a devoted poet to be moral
himself, [but] in no way is it necessary for his poems.
In point of fact, these have wit and charm,
if they are sensitive and a little shameless,
and can arouse an itch,
and I don't mean in boys, but in those hairy old men
who can't get it up.
Because you've read my countless kisses,
you think less of me as a man?
I will sodomize you and face-fuck you.

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 21:02 (six years ago)

uh, even if someone was unfamiliar with Monty Python as the reference, they could still LOL at "bigus dickus" - like it is inherently funny because it is "big dick" with another syllable at the end -- and you can rhyme it with "pick us" or "lick us" ... like, motherfuckers think they can lick us, gonna give them a taste of my bigus dickus ... i mean, maybe it is bougie in origin, but ...

sarahell, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 21:13 (six years ago)

Honestly not sure if non-bougie schoolkids were taught some Latin in the UK of 50 years ago, but yeah I think Bigus Dickus probably doesn't require a university education
