insofar as any candidate except Bloomberg and Yang would sign executive orders and appoint administrators better than any Republican, yeah, it doesn't matter who wins the Dem nomination

all other disagreements aside, I think it's clear by now that whomst has the presidency has a psychological effect on the nation, so there's also that.

I have my doubts.

I think the Campos post is reductive but I agree with the sentiment. This past week left me especially Sick of This Shit and I'm at the point now where I'll vote for Biden with a raging hard-on if it comes to that.

This comment is also worth noting:

_Whatever perceived competence the Executive Branch may have had, any illusion on the part of other countries that the US can have a stable international policy is shot to hell for the lifetime of everyone of voting age in those countries. A Democratic president may generate an overseas sigh of relief, but trust in the US is never going to be further than "will this promise be delivered on while you are still in office?"_

Yeah I can see a Klob or Biden having vastly different objectives than a sanders or Warren

Trump's opponent, whoever it is, gets 47% by having a heartbeat. The rest will come by how hard people are motivated to bang the drum.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 3 February 2020 18:34 (six years ago)

xps unperson, the only way to stem the tide of right wing nationalism is to beat it, and the only way to do that is to put forth a vision for the future that voters en masse can actually embrace. If people liked the way it was before they wouldn’t have voted for trump in the first place.

treeship., Monday, 3 February 2020 18:38 (six years ago)

ah ok that's more rural focused which means....Bernies gonna win

frogbs, Monday, 3 February 2020 18:39 (six years ago)

Given the mechanics of how caucuses work, a 4% difference between 1st and 4th place could fall out in a very wide range of final outcomes. So, if you live in Iowa, just go caucus, and if you don't, don't sweat bullets over the polls because it won't help at all.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 3 February 2020 18:40 (six years ago)

iirc there was some rules change that rural/small caucuses count for more or something?

Joe Biden’s campaign team is setting expectations low for the Iowa caucuses Monday night.

While some campaign aides were unsure how the results would turn out hours before the caucuses would begin, they expressed some apprehension about the outcome.

“Most [aides] feel it’s not going to be great,” one longtime Biden ally who has had conversations with top aides inside the campaign, acknowledged Monday.

Biden’s aides and allies said they were hoping to place in the top three. But even if they fall short, the campaign is “built for the long haul,” one Biden confidant said.

as with debates, isn't it a pretty standard move to set low expectations, so you can artificially create an "outperformed expectations" narrative? He may still be taking a drubbing but simon h otm, a "longtime ally" pretend-leaking what "aides and allies" are saying is just noise.

Caucusus seem like they’re designed by bored bishops to frustrate the selection of unpopularr future papal leaders. I can imagine a third-tier Borgia shouting, like, “heretics, the lot of you!”?at a crowd of Bernie Bros.

Guys, I am realizing tonight, as I think about the fact that this Iowa vote, dumb as it is, could be a killing blow to Elizabeth Warren's campaign, is that I really do in my heart want her to win. I mean I have questions about her ability to win a general election, I really do. I don't know strategically what's right and I don't even know who I'm going to vote for. But when I think about her campaign being over, and the sinking feeling that gives me, I realize that when it comes down to it she's the one I most want to be my President.

Now let's see what happens, I guess.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 3 February 2020 23:41 (six years ago)

if she places second or third and gets more than 15% she still gets delegates so idk I wouldn't count her campaign out yet.

Οὖτις, Monday, 3 February 2020 23:43 (six years ago)

I think she'd nominate the best Cabinet and agency heads, and her temperament suggests she'd listen, keep an open mind, but be firm once she's made a decision. And I want a woman as president.

It doesn't look good.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 February 2020 23:49 (six years ago)

agree it doesn't look good but if Biden doesn't win IA or NH that sets up a collapse in NC and then we're in a whole different playing field

One hopes that Biden is more easily discouraged by early caucuses and primaries than Warren is, even if his votes are higher than hers.

Meanwhile, several satellite locations were held for Iowa snowbirds in Florida and Arizona. At one location in Port Charlotte, Florida, which was broadcast live by CNN, Amy Klobuchar carried the room. Here are those numbers:

First Alignment:

Klobuchar: 48
Buttigieg: 38
Biden: 32
Warren: 12
Steyer: 2
Sanders: 1
Yang: 1

Second Alignment:

Klobuchar: 56
Buttigieg: 44
Biden: 43
