Sanders bipartisan record in the Senate is mostly on the foreign policy side. Warren's is more on the domestic side (and there seems to be a bit more of it, although a breakdown of bills would take some time to analyze)

xps

LBJ would have had a secret fetlife account in 2020.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:35 (six years ago)

LBJ was known to notoriously leave the bathroom door open during conversations with Senators. Why this detail sticks out to some people idk, LBJ was a generally boorish and uncouth guy who nonetheless knew how to alternately twist arms, be obsequious, or underhanded and manipulative, depending on what the situation called for.

Everyone interested in how shit got done in the Senate in the 20th century should read the last couple volumes of the Caro bios.

A friend of mine also cites “the bully pulpit” as a response to how Sanders will get things done. I don’t get it.

juntos pedemos (Euler), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:49 (six years ago)

Whatever passes through Diamond Joe backslapping Manchin and other the other grandees of our worst constitutional institution probably wouldn’t be M4A

it definitely wouldn't be, Biden has repeatedly argued that all we need to do is give Romneycare a li'l tweak or two and America will be running smoothly forever, Fat

"Warren's support seems to be tanking" becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when people use her "cratering" as a reason not to support her. To me that seems backwards; I would rather continue my support for her until she's no longer an option, rather than abandon it because other people have. Just me, maybe.

Her slipping in polls even while other candidates drop out is bemusing, and I think she'd make the most effective President, and she certainly has the broader portfolio of detailed and costed policies that would improve the country, the planet and global democracy. However, I've been saying for months that I'd prefer a Bernie / VP Warren or a Warren + Bernie-in-cabinet ticket, because Bernie has strengths as a campaigner against Trump that nobody else in the race holds.

Reading the other week that the Bernie campaign had specifically checked whether a VP Warren could also be Treasury Secretary was fucking thrilling, even if it had turned out the answer was "no." In my life of being vaguely or closely aware of American elections (ie since Bill The Cat's second run), the DNC have either paired Will This Do? with A Grey Piece Of Paper, or paired someone with moderate charisma with an utter personality void.

I don't know that nigh-daily polls tell us anything useful, and the months of campaigning and caucuses are overall a sickness in the US system. (Also, anybody who'd vote for Biden next month is probably disengaged enough from politics that they'll vote for any D with a name they know from TV, come November.) But if the poll slides mean anything, voltronning early would forestall dumbshits for thinking of Warren as a loser, and increase the chances of a ticket that she's on being the one that goes to the polls.

Οὖτις, Friday, 31 January 2020 22:56 (six years ago)

but would they not vote for the nice 71-year-old lady if she's had six months of TV ads and interviews by November

don't care didn't ask still clappin (sic), Friday, 31 January 2020 23:05 (six years ago)

what are Biden's policy platforms with which they are most engaged?

majority whip, majority nae nae (m bison), Friday, 31 January 2020 23:08 (six years ago)

Gad you defeatists for the past three hours.

Its the JUDICIARY, dummies. Even if Biden or Bloomberg or Buttigieg don't tickle your nethers, even if you understand that both Bernie and Warren won't have enough of a mandate to get more than a small fraction of their platforms enacted, a Trump reelection means a judiciary packed with Federalist Society cunts for the next several decades.

I will gladly vote for any Dem in November. Among other things, because we're one supreme court justice away from clothes hangar abortions...

Darth Bambi (Sanpaku), Friday, 31 January 2020 23:16 (six years ago)

I will gladly vote for any Dem in November.

As will everyone but Morbs.

If I broke my "never vote for someone who voted for the Iraq War" pledge in a meaningless red state election once, I can do it again.

This is a very good argument for Bernie's electability:

We really need some senatorial candidates running on the platform of abolishing the Senate

― Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby)

That's a Republican position

― totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP)

It is?

― TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn)

Pretty sure there is a conservative-libertarian-"Tenther" position that wants to repeal the 17th Amendment that nationalized direct election of Senators, and return to having state legislatures appoint Senators.

The idea being that Senators should advocate for the state itself vis-a-vis the Federal union, as opposed to advocating for their constituent humans within the Federal construct, like House reps are supposed to.

The philosophy is that states aren't mere geographic subdivisions within a nation-state. The idea is that states are more like the sovereign countries that make up (for example) the European Union, as opposed to the way that, e.g., a US state has counties in it.

So as I understand it, it's not so much that Republicans want to do away with the Senate. They just want it to return to where it was in, say, 1850. It's a states' rights argument.

Now let's pause to consider whether there might be some problematic aspects to that position. I seem to remember we've heard about "states' rights" before and that didn't go so well.

Okay, you're an ambulance (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 1 February 2020 02:26 (six years ago)

nah, fuck it, the Senate is undemocratic

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 February 2020 03:04 (six years ago)

Yeah Alfred sums up my objection.

Also late to this but as much as I abhor death cultism its appeal is undeniable and it wins elections for the other side

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Saturday, 1 February 2020 03:20 (six years ago)

tangent, but serious question: besides being annoying, is there any actual benefit for bloomberg from being in the next debate that he is not already accomplishing by throwing shitloads of money at TV advertising

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Saturday, 1 February 2020 06:03 (six years ago)

It might add marginally to his 'seriousness' as a candidate, but in general, I'd say no measurable benefit. He's been the mayor of a city much larger than South Bend.

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 1 February 2020 06:11 (six years ago)

If he thinks he can make a persuasive case for the claims in his TV ads by speaking whole sentences, then it's a benefit for him to get to do so. If he believes he can make a more convincing case for himself as a candidate when set against the others, or if he has a notion that his TV ads are shallow and unconvincing, it benefits him to be set against the others and to add to his seriousness.

(People in this thread may not have the same estimates of his capacity at making a case for himself as he does, but these seem plausible thoughts for an individual to have. One certainly hopes that being the mayor of a city with a larger population than most countries gave him the political awareness that his ads do not, in themselves, do anything at all to back up their own claims that Mike Will Made It Git-R-Done.)

[I dunno that said mayorship says much to the great lumpenvoter tbh]

There should be no more primary debates. They're pointless and stupid. And I'm sick of Pete Buttigeig's fucking face. Just start voting and weeding out more of these cunts, as quickly as possible.

man, the DNC. awful.

When @CoryBooker led an effort to change the debate thresholds, the DNC refused—saying they couldn’t benefit any candidate.

It seems the only candidate they’re willing to benefit is a billionaire who’s buying his way into the race. Total mess. https://t.co/mw0MhdyjBr
