speaking of bernie and bullshit (and bernie and bullshit and bernie and bullshit), forgive me if this was already posted but it's fun to watch

yep

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 21 January 2020 23:57 (six years ago)

On one hand I admire the no-bullshit; on the other, I worry about a Sanders administration's relationship with Congress because bullshitting and backslapping them is the only way to deal with them. I'm reading Carter fan/staffer Stuart Eizenstat's Carter biography and am reminded anew of how a Dem majority after the first year couldn't work with him.

But the point's moot if the Senate stays GOP.

opinion columnists don't have seats on the editorial board apparently
― international sword swallower, producer and creative director (bizarro gazzara), Monday, January 20, 2020 9:02 AM

Opinion columnists do. Op-ed columnists don't.

I should probably know this but can someone tell me the difference in a Times context between opinion coilumns and op-ed columns?

Alba, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 01:33 (six years ago)

opinion columnists are NYT employees, while op-ed columnists are not and have no regular standing or regular appearances

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 01:50 (six years ago)

Ah, right yes. But Liz Bruenig is employed by the NYT, right? That's what's confusing me about the exchange above.

Alba, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:02 (six years ago)

Oh right, I've got it now.

Alba, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:04 (six years ago)

It's very different to what I'm used to in the UK, where the equivalent of an editorial board would be the "leader writers". The Guardian has many senior opinion writers on staff who have nothing to do with the unsigned editorials aka "leaders", though some of them do.

Alba, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:08 (six years ago)

I don't think that's exactly right. Op-ed columnists include outside contributors but also regulars like Brooks, Krugman, Douthat, Collins, Stephens, Bouie, Goldberg, and Dowd. Opinion writers are members of the Editorial Board who often write unsigned editorials but also occasionally write pieces under their own byline.

Also, Liz Bruenig writes for the Washington Post, IIRC.

jaymc, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:09 (six years ago)

(Sorry, my first sentence was in response to Aimless, if that wasn't clear.)

jaymc, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:10 (six years ago)

Liz Bruenig has moved from the Post to the Times

Alba, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:12 (six years ago)

Oh, I missed that! Good hire.

One thing that confuses me is that it does seem like there are other Opinion writers who don't sit on the board and also aren't op-ed columnists.

For instance, Aisha Harris has a bio on the Editorial Board page that says "Because of her areas of expertise, the editorial board asked Ms. Harris to join its endorsement process, though she is not an official member."

Also, Opinion just published a series on surveillance written by Charlie Warzel (on the Board) and Stuart Thompson (not on the Board).

jaymc, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:14 (six years ago)

The editorial board consists of the people on the editorial board

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:15 (six years ago)

All this is making me think that the NYT editorial board takes itself very seriously

Alba, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:17 (six years ago)

That is a fair assumption.

jaymc, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:21 (six years ago)

On the few newspapers I am most familiar with, there is an editorial board which is responsible for unsigned editorials stating the 'official' views of the newspaper. Next there are opinion columnists who are employees whose work appears on a regular schedule, as bylined opinion columns, and who may or may not be included on the editorial board. Lastly, there are guest columnists whose opinions appear on the editorial pages and are bylined, but who are not employees and have no regular standing. These last I hear termed as op-ed pieces, as opposed to official editorials or regularly appearing opinion columns.

That's how I've understood this terminology for a couple of decades now. Doesn't mean I'm right, but this has not been contradicted by any specific new information during that time.

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:25 (six years ago)

This making the band thing the editorial board did was highly embarrassing.

treeship., Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:32 (six years ago)

It may be that those in the second tier aren't actually employees but on long-standing writing contracts to deliver a certain number or frequency of columns. Someone like Krugman, for example. At least that's the way it works with a lot of big-name columnists in the UK, even when they've been closely associated with a certain paper for years.

Alba, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 02:43 (six years ago)

Has bruenig actually written anything for the Times yet? It figures that the one socialist who gets to write opinion pieces for the papers of record would be a pro-life weirdo

it is fucking maddening. before I got off Twitter she was one of the v v few ppl I had “muted”. even if the pro-life horseshit didn’t come up much, prob 90% of my follows followed her and I decided I didn’t want to actively hate the one leftist working in mainstream legacy media.

somehow i had missed this fun lawsuit:

Presidential candidate and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) is suing former Secretary of State and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for defamation. The $50 million lawsuit centers on remarks that Clinton made recently when she suggested that one of the 2020 Democratic candidates was being groomed for a third-party run and that he or she was a “Russian asset.” Clinton never singled out Gabbard by name.

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 16:00 (six years ago)

of course, clinton was obviously referring to bernie

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 16:01 (six years ago)

fascinating: CNN asked if Dems wld feel enthusiastic-or-satisfied vs disatisfied-or-upset if a candidate won

Biden: 72% vs 26% (upset: 9%)
Sanders: 77% vs 23% (upset: 10%)
Warren: 72% vs 24% (upset: 7%)

For Nov., this isn't the splintered party we read about, incl. for Sanders.
