On one hand I admire the no-bullshit; on the other, I worry about a Sanders administration's relationship with Congress because bullshitting and backslapping them is the only way to deal with them. I'm reading Carter fan/staffer Stuart Eizenstat's Carter biography and am reminded anew of how a Dem majority after the first year couldn't work with him.

But the point's moot if the Senate stays GOP.

Ah, right yes. But Liz Bruenig is employed by the NYT, right? That's what's confusing me about the exchange above.

Oh right, I've got it now.

It's very different to what I'm used to in the UK, where the equivalent of an editorial board would be the "leader writers". The Guardian has many senior opinion writers on staff who have nothing to do with the unsigned editorials aka "leaders", though some of them do.

I don't think that's exactly right. Op-ed columnists include outside contributors but also regulars like Brooks, Krugman, Douthat, Collins, Stephens, Bouie, Goldberg, and Dowd. Opinion writers are members of the Editorial Board who often write unsigned editorials but also occasionally write pieces under their own byline.

Also, Liz Bruenig writes for the Washington Post, IIRC.

One thing that confuses me is that it does seem like there are other Opinion writers who don't sit on the board and also aren't op-ed columnists.

For instance, Aisha Harris has a bio on the Editorial Board page that says "Because of her areas of expertise, the editorial board asked Ms. Harris to join its endorsement process, though she is not an official member."

Also, Opinion just published a series on surveillance written by Charlie Warzel (on the Board) and Stuart Thompson (not on the Board).

That is a fair assumption.

On the few newspapers I am most familiar with, there is an editorial board which is responsible for unsigned editorials stating the 'official' views of the newspaper. Next there are opinion columnists who are employees whose work appears on a regular schedule, as bylined opinion columns, and who may or may not be included on the editorial board. Lastly, there are guest columnists whose opinions appear on the editorial pages and are bylined, but who are not employees and have no regular standing. These last I hear termed as op-ed pieces, as opposed to official editorials or regularly appearing opinion columns.

That's how I've understood this terminology for a couple of decades now. Doesn't mean I'm right, but this has not been contradicted by any specific new information during that time.

This making the band thing the editorial board did was highly embarrassing.

It may be that those in the second tier aren't actually employees but on long-standing writing contracts to deliver a certain number or frequency of columns. Someone like Krugman, for example. At least that's the way it works with a lot of big-name columnists in the UK, even when they've been closely associated with a certain paper for years.
