Alexandra Petri captures the absurdity of the NYT endorsement:

In 2020, American voters must choose among several visions of the future. There is a serious debate going on in the Democratic Party about what is wrong with the country and what needs to be done to fix it.

And I, for one, am not going to take a stance on that debate.

Should we be realists? Should we be radicals? Should we be neither radical nor realistic? Yes, yes and yes!

I’m more than ready for this to end. Here’s my ranking of candidates by chronological order of muting their names on Twitter because of their obnoxious supporters:

1. ā€œYangā€
2. ā€œBernieā€ (also muted ā€œSandersā€ to block tweets from ā€œNever Trumpā€ Republicans)
3. ā€œPeteā€
4. ā€œWarrenā€ (also muted ā€œšŸā€ to capture people not muted by ā€œBernieā€).

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 20 January 2020 17:02 (six years ago)

This was tweet that was responsible for me muting ā€œWarren:ā€

As someone invested in NBA Twitter, muting šŸ was an extremely difficult decision.

Another reading of the NY Times' polycephalous endorsement, as Biden continues his sleepwalk to the likely nomination, is that it's really an endorsement of Klobuchar for VP.

I can't see that happening, he's gonna have to try to loop in progressives somehow

Biden doesn't learn

If they didn't learn the Joe Lieberman lesson in 2000 they're not going to learn it now.

Biden will pick Doug Jones or something.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 20 January 2020 23:03 (six years ago)

I don't think it was as obvious in 2016 that Clinton needed to court voters to her left, especially not when the historic nature of her candidacy was itself branded as progressive. The calculus for picking Kaine was clearly let's get a boring white guy from the South to appease voters who might be uneasy about the bold choice of putting a woman at the top of the ticket. It seems far more accepted in 2020 that Biden's failure to appeal to progressives is a serious liability and that a VP pick would need to be someone who can stand in contrast to his centrism.

jaymc, Tuesday, 21 January 2020 00:40 (six years ago)

Accepted by whom? The Democratic Party thinks ol' Joe is the goddamn savior. The press wants fucking Klobuchar. For these people, "failure to appeal to progressives" is the very quality they're after.

Chuck Todd in November:

"There's only one running mate for him... It's the same running mate Joe Biden has to pick and it's the same running mate Pete Buttigieg has to pick. It's Stacey Abrams, by the way," Todd told the panel. "There's nobody else that Bloomberg can match up to beat out someone in this nomination than Stacey Abrams."

Todd added, "I think he has to have a person of color. I think he needs diversity on the ticket, person of color."

Now, Abrams isn't a socialist or anything, but Todd (who seems to embody dumb pundit-class conventional wisdom) at least acknowledges that a safe white guy isn't the way to go.

jaymc, Tuesday, 21 January 2020 02:33 (six years ago)

Chuck Todd has also repeatedly said things like "But don't forget about Amy Klobuchar!" or "What about Amy Klobuchar?" when MTP panels start to get too excited about Warren or Sanders for his taste. Believe me, he's one of her biggest media boosters.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Tuesday, 21 January 2020 02:39 (six years ago)

the candidate i think is really interesting is that senator from vermont. bernie sanders, i think.

Are you quoting from Pete Buttigieg's Profile in Courage essay?

jaymc, Tuesday, 21 January 2020 02:47 (six years ago)

huh hadn't read this before. kind of an interesting time capsule -- in the first paragraph he says cynicism and apathy are the main problems in american politics. today i guess high schoolers would talk about paranoid rage and information warfare and online radicalization

Word to God, I actually think this is Biden's biggest hidden strength. I think after nearly 4 years of Trump, the country is going to be ready to zone out and Biden can give us that. I'm 100% serious. https://t.co/ltCST7iiXV

Bernie apologizing to Biden for an op-ed Zephyr Teachout wrote once again making clear this has been a kids' glove primary. Which has been great news for Biden.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 21 January 2020 03:33 (six years ago)

this has been a kids' glove primary.

the campaign is young. iowa hasn't even caucused, yet. By late March, we'll see how gently the survivors are playing with each other. By the time it's down to two or three apparently viable candidates the odds are they won't be aiming to inflict shallow paper cuts and light scratches on each other. They'll still joust as cleanly as they can - but they'll look to draw blood and maybe break a bone of two.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 21 January 2020 04:24 (six years ago)

I don't think it was as obvious in 2016 that Clinton needed to court voters to her left, especially not when the historic nature of her candidacy was itself branded as progressive.

After the primary campaign's bitterness and with her negatives... and 2000?

The Dem establishment's assumption is that progressives will have to suck it up and vote for the candidate - and if left doesn't (or... even if they do and the candidate loses anyway) they get even more reason to punch left on a regular basis.
