warren got 8 in that breakdown. klob still inexplicably 7

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 20 January 2020 15:04 (six years ago)

vote breakdown is upthread, apparently EW got 8 to Klobber's 7

as someone asked, why would Bernie want the NYT's endorsement?

Wasn't the vote "who are your top 2"? I can see Klobuchar being a viable 2nd choice for the NYT editorial board demographic

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Monday, 20 January 2020 15:22 (six years ago)

opinion columnists don't have seats on the editorial board apparently

Opinion columnists do. Op-ed columnists don't.

jaymc, Monday, 20 January 2020 15:22 (six years ago)

possibly the only context in which it makes sense to refer to her as "viable" (except maybe "viable threat to low-level staffers") xp

Here's who's on the board:

Serge Schmemann, Charlie Warzel, Jesse Wegman, Lauren Kelley, Brent Staples, Kathleen Kingsbury, Jeneen Interlandi, John Broder, James Dao, Nick Fox, Aisha Harris, Alex Kingsbury, Binyamin Appelbaum, Mara Gay, Michelle Cottle

I wanna know who cast the lone Bernie vote

it's astonishing and/or hilarious how close they came to backing booker

i'd post my klobuchar gif on twitter but i'm afraid that her legion of fans would get mad and...oh wait, none of her supporters are on twitter, i have nothing to fear

i guess i'll post it if she ever reaches 7% in a poll

Alexandra Petri captures the absurdity of the NYT endorsement:

In 2020, American voters must choose among several visions of the future. There is a serious debate going on in the Democratic Party about what is wrong with the country and what needs to be done to fix it.

And I, for one, am not going to take a stance on that debate.

Should we be realists? Should we be radicals? Should we be neither radical nor realistic? Yes, yes and yes!

I’m more than ready for this to end. Here’s my ranking of candidates by chronological order of muting their names on Twitter because of their obnoxious supporters:

1. “Yang”
2. “Bernie” (also muted “Sanders” to block tweets from “Never Trump” Republicans)
3. “Pete”
4. “Warren” (also muted “🐍” to capture people not muted by “Bernie”).

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 20 January 2020 17:02 (six years ago)

This was tweet that was responsible for me muting “Warren:”

Get yourself a Warren man instead. #Men4Warren pic.twitter.com/K8CdVcwFSf

As someone invested in NBA Twitter, muting 🐍 was an extremely difficult decision.

My Twitter feed gives me way more Trump nonsense than anything about any of the Democrats, mostly because people still seem to think they can dunk on Trump on Twitter

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Monday, 20 January 2020 17:52 (six years ago)

Another reading of the NY Times' polycephalous endorsement, as Biden continues his sleepwalk to the likely nomination, is that it's really an endorsement of Klobuchar for VP.

o. nate, Monday, 20 January 2020 20:30 (six years ago)

I can't see that happening, he's gonna have to try to loop in progressives somehow

If they didn't learn the Joe Lieberman lesson in 2000 they're not going to learn it now.

Biden will pick Doug Jones or something.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 20 January 2020 23:03 (six years ago)

I don't think it was as obvious in 2016 that Clinton needed to court voters to her left, especially not when the historic nature of her candidacy was itself branded as progressive. The calculus for picking Kaine was clearly let's get a boring white guy from the South to appease voters who might be uneasy about the bold choice of putting a woman at the top of the ticket. It seems far more accepted in 2020 that Biden's failure to appeal to progressives is a serious liability and that a VP pick would need to be someone who can stand in contrast to his centrism.
