NO coffee since my ablation for atrial fibbing in august -- EXCEPT for a 10-day burst at the start of the year to get two big long complex drafts of pieces (one on terry riley, one on the fall) finished and in to their deadlines (the riley requires much more work inc being much shorter lol)
during the full drought i was back in hospital for a week post-ablation with atrial flutter in september, this is now controlled by meds and not life-threatening but also an indication the ablation didn't really work (it's pooooossible the symptoms were exacerbated by the wine i drank at a birthday picnic but i choose not to confront this issue, also it's not like a drink that much or that cutting down on red wine at picnics is anything like as tough as cutting out coffee) (also red wine is good for the heart, observe the french, voila)
during the 10-day burst i was pleased to note i was not getting palps or other amplified symptoms -- to start i felt p good in fact, focused and un-achey etc. toward the end i was getting the usual morning sliuggishness and coming off caffeine i got the usual headaches, which have only just now dissipated tbrr.
my conclusion is that coffee actually has little unacceptable impact on my heart symptoms -- my main consultant agrees but he is VERY relaxed and laissez faire and dare i say it dodgy abt self-medication via non-pharmaceutical means viz alcohol and weed lol (i have not gone down these routes in any sustained sense). basically my beta blockers leave me a bit tired, and coffeee counters this at point of consumption but then leaves me even more tired later plus less likely to sleep soundly. off it i sleep well.

I haven't gotten myself a bag of fancy-pants single-origin coffee in a really long time, been just drinking Starbucks Via at home and Keurig at work. Literally nowhere in my neighborhood sells good whole bean coffee. Thinking I should order one next time we do fresh direct.

i gave up getting nice coffee for the house because I'm never up in enough time during the week and I'm enough of a douche to care about the coffee not tasting as good in the weeks following it being roasted
― bidenfan69420 (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 21 January 2020 22:21 (six years ago)
so i just have tim horton's as i arrive at my office
― bidenfan69420 (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 21 January 2020 22:22 (six years ago)
I def favor the convenience of Via on weekdays while trying to get the kids to school, and the freeness of keurig at work, but I'd like a nicer cup on weekends at least.

My local stores' idea of "good" coffee is like "GOWANUS GOLD GENERIC DARK ROAST 100% GROUND COFFEE"

I have a cold brew bucket contraption that allows me to make a batch of fancy coffee and use it intermittently for a few weeks to supplement the daily French press coffeeIt makes having a fancy cup much easier!
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 00:36 (six years ago)
I have found the best way to make coffee in the office is using a black plastic filter cone (cost: GBP2.00), filter papers (GBP1.00 for a pack of 40) and whatever bulk ground coffee the company buys. Better flavour than a cafetiere, miles easier to clean, and no-one else is likely to use/break/steal it.

After being without a coffee grinder for a lil while, I realized the other day that a blender works perfectly fine -- maybe not for evenly ground espresso, but for drip or french press or whatever
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Saturday, 23 May 2020 20:01 (six years ago)
this is what its coarsest grind looks like... barf

capresso burr grinder or deaththose are the choices

keep the braun as a spice grinder, that what we use ours for.

My wife got me (us) a Stumptown Coffee subscription before the lockdown started, and its been a godsend. A little pricey but still less than I used to spend getting my coffee in a shop every morning.
― o. nate, Sunday, 24 May 2020 01:33 (six years ago)
some nice cof
― lag∞n, Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:25 (six years ago)
We have been using this little milk delivery company that brings us ronnybrook milk and yogurt and good eggs every week for a reasonable price, and they have their own label of coffee that's $11/lb and good enough, so I've just been drinking that.
Last few times I bought fancier coffee I was sort of let down - one was Counter Culture and one was Partners
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 24 May 2020 15:32 (six years ago)
I've been very impressed with the quality of the Stumptown shipments we've received. And you usually get it within a few days of the roast date.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 01:31 (six years ago)
people in this thread doing some .... stumping ... for stumptown coffee. should rename the thread "this thread is like stumptown for stumptown coffee"
― crystal-brained yogahead (map), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 03:25 (six years ago)
I don’t mind seeing a little as we have near 0% stumptown infiltration locally
been brewing up a big bag of Kirkland Colombian blend here, folks
Need to make a run to the place that roasts a lot of varieties nearby, but only if I break out the presses and not just drip
― mh, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 04:02 (six years ago)
I got my first coffeeshop cap since COVID the other day - I had to get it through the window from outside and it felt slightly illicit and was very satisfying to drink. I kind of wish I had one right now even though it's after midnight.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 04:31 (six years ago)
kirkland colombian is good. Hmmm,,,stumptown is kind of pricey. considering getting a bag as a splurge the next time I go home but good coffee is kind of wasted on me.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 13:23 (six years ago)
who are those sickos who make the canned coffee that's carbonated like mineral water and it has like.. lemon in it?
it was just such an odd tangent off of what I'd expect from coffee in a can that I want to try it again
― mh, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 13:33 (six years ago)
I was just skimming this thread and I am surprised, yet again, that most people sip their coffee.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 13:49 (six years ago)
I really don't like how it's called "cupping" coffee.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 13:50 (six years ago)
sickos!
― mh, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 13:52 (six years ago)
i got an iced white americano the other day from a cafe doing window service and the staff there decided to top up the cup not with water but with..... sparkling water
it tasted like ass
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 14:24 (six years ago)
we're moving into the fourth wave of coffee, where it's formulated to be genuinely revolting
you're not a real coffee fan unless you praise it
― mh, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 14:26 (six years ago)
It's the neurotic American drive for novelty and innovation. I feel like we had basically gotten things right in the last 5-10 years, but now we're getting away from that and into all this nitro bullshit, coffee sodas, weird flavorings, bulletproof, etc.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:16 (six years ago)
when i took the coffee back they apologised. it was a genuine mistake. it's wild how just the presence of bubbles seems to create a whole actual TASTE (a bad taste)
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:27 (six years ago)
I like nitro cold brew. not really a big cold brew fan in general because of the mouthfeel of a cold brew coffee (it's probably the same as hot coffee but the temperature difference makes me experience the two differently).
― Rik Waller-Bridge (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:34 (six years ago)
yes carbonation + cof = bad
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 27 May 2020 16:35 (six years ago)
nitro is like a pint of Guinness crossed with a coffee

some people drink espresso and tonic
― ||||||||, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:20 (six years ago)
they give you a little thing of soda water with espresso in italy sometimes? or is that tonic?
― Yerac, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:32 (six years ago)
espresso served with a soda water back is common in these parts
― silby, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 19:33 (six years ago)
not mixed together though, ffs

i support the cofant garde
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 May 2020 22:13 (six years ago)
I agree Stumptown is pricey, but I usually only drink one 10 oz mug's worth a day, so I don't go through it that fast.
