my iPhone SE is now randomly showing me the shutdown screen and not recognising my fingerprints. The Internet says this is probably because of a damaged 'flex cable' connected to the power button.

This ever happen to anyone else? Really don't want a new phone but I don't want to pay big buxx for somebody to fix that cable.

My wife dropped her iphone SE a week ago and since then the display has been kinda wonky but still usable. The problem is also that since then, the phone won't connect to her iCloud account (hence no iMessages) - the phone just hangs for a while before diplaying an error message. Seems very odd since I can't see how this could be linked to a physical hardware issue.

they do security stuff based on the hardware, like Touch ID disables itself if it thinks it has been tampered with, in case someone's trying to hack the secure enclave. That's where the iCloud credentials are stored, so I could see a weird alignment of things causing that.

I still have an SE for my personal non-work phone but my Apple buddy says a replacement is coming in March. Let me see if I can find a leak page.

Hmm.. iPhone 8 form factor. Kinda lame. I wish they’d keep the existing SE case. IMO the most ergonomic iPhone form factor and most attractive as well.

Seems like there’s an opening here for an Android manufacturer to scoop up some of Apple’s market share. The Sony XZ2 Compact is intriguing though still a bit too bulky.

talked to iSmash. they opened it up. it needs a new power button and flex cable. it'll take 3-5 days to get here and once it does they'll make the fix in 2 hrs. they're going to do it for £40, parts, labour, VAT included. they already replaced the screen and home button for free because it's been less than a year since they replaced the screen and they said it felt 'loose'. i love iSmash?!

se2 is basically the only way they're gonna get me to upgrade

just give us an iphone with original SE dimensions, a current cpu, and 256gb of memory... jesus Apple this is not rocket science, your products are not sexy new tech anymore they are commodity hardware so get over yourself

yeah a year ago I sourced a used SE with 128GB storage and decided I am basically done with phones, there is little they could do to get me back in the game until this one dies.

i was in the apple store last week and i picked up the Beats headphones and it pinched the shit out of my finger. I am never touching them again.

i couldn't get the skin of my finger out and I was trying to play it off like they weren't attached to my hand.

I moved some office equipment without properly disassembling it last year, like an idiot, and pinched the palm of my hand in something heavy. After lots of mumbling "ow ow ow" I got it down and ended up ripping off a chunk of skin :(

it's thinner and lighter than my 2013 15", so hey, progress. plus it can reliably wake from sleep without being plugged in.

ha, my laptop is so old (because it's better than what they sell now) that i had no idea that sound had gone away until i saw that do the rounds.

Still rocking the Q3 2014 mbp that I got as a hand-me-down at work and loving it! It's pretty maxed-out and every once in awhile my mind boggles at how much the 1tb SSD must have cost them back then.

is this a good thread for asking about buying a new vs. refurbished (by apple or others) macbook ? can post this elsewhere if that’s advisable:

my 2011 macbook pro recently gave out on me and i can’t find anybody who’s willing to even attempt fixing it. so it looks like i need something new.

it looks like ebay has a number of offerings in the 400 - 800 dollar range of macbook pros 2012 -2017. lots of these sellers offer 1 year warranties. can they be trusted ?

a friend has a brand spanking new macbook. no usb ports and a confusing keyboard sort of. i don’t want that, do i ?

is there a particular year, a vintage if you will, of macbooks that is particularly reliable / desirable / durable / unfussy ?

is there a particular online RETAILER, a dependable, trustworthy purveyor of secondhand macs ?

i’m not a graphic designer, a gamer, a tech person. mostly my computer is my interface for large digital music collection, a place to actually type long form things, a way to interact with the internet, also DAW. i’m hopelessly wedded to macbook life, i doubt you could persuade me to leave the cult.

any advice greatly appreciated.

would you consider a macbook air? way cheaper and doesn't sound like you need a ton of ram or processing power. you can pick up a ~2015 macbook air for like, idk, prob somewhere in the 350-500 range probably?
