'Sly Cooper' Movie Breaking Into Theaters In 2016 (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:50 (six years ago)

re: what you do with ultimate power here's a better quote from Kin Dza-Dza:

"There will be no air for anybody who comes here... The air will be ours. They'll be crawling around, and we'll be spitting on them."
"Why??"
"For fun!"
"Where's the fun in that?"
"Ah" *laughs* "You're too young to understand..."

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:52 (six years ago)

if you are hating these shitty films

This doesn't actually describe anyone in this thread though?

(cut to shot of blue sky that Shakey warps into)

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:53 (six years ago)

I absolutely hate all three of them at this point. I don't pay for tickets, though

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:54 (six years ago)

i may be projecting: i hate what i've seen of these shitty films and am not watching more until someone i trust can tell me with a straight face that they succeed on their own merits

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:55 (six years ago)

Rogue One is a good film, go see that (wait, do you mean like ALL Star Wars film including the original trilogy?)

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 15:57 (six years ago)

i watched rogue one on netflix while recuperating from a bad cold, it was... okay? It was fine. I barely remember it.
I have determined that the original trilogy are not films that i ever want to see or particularly want to think about ever again. Maybe with a child if they're interested. Otherwise, their metastasization into cultural ubiquity has left me really exhausted with them and i am okay avoiding with the exception of well-done side projects that catch my fancy ("fancy" spelled "mandalorian")

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:01 (six years ago)

Not to single you out, forks, because you're good people, but I don't understand that thing ILXors do where they enter a discussion about a thing only to say some variation on 'this thing is garbage and not worth thinking about or discussing'. I don't think I'll ever understand. I've tried.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:06 (six years ago)

well now i've watched and obsessed over A LOT of star wars; i am a nerd spurned not a never-was-a-nerd! i tried both the new trilogies and found them deeply wanting and will likely in a moment of weakness watch Last Jedi. I'm just saying (again and again), don't pay for this stuff in theaters when it's clear by every critical analysis that i've read - both fan and pro - that this is a botched bit of work. Skip day one and wait for some feedback before investing, same as you would with most films and maybe we'll live in a less culturally shitty world.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:12 (six years ago)

Also I don't understand the thing where the ubiquity of a cultural product has reached a degree of ubiquity such that those who find it distasteful find it inescapable. Like professional sports have been up in my grill throughout my life and I somehow manage to walk by Wrigley Field without flashing the double bird and blowing raspberries in the direction of the entire dumb enterprise. Most of the time I manage, anyway. The beat-downs from superfans are a good deterrent, I find.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:18 (six years ago)

xpost I feel you, forks.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:20 (six years ago)

tbf 2 u, if i had to choose between canceling "sports culture" and "star wars culture", i'd likely go for the former as more harmful and omnipresent and noxious.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:24 (six years ago)

As I mentioned in all three of the attendant threads, this latest trilogy has been a nice excuse for theatergoing with my whole family for the first time (three times) in forever. Otherwise, I probably would've been fine seeing them (and quickly forgetting them) whenever I got around to seeing them.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:25 (six years ago)

So you understand that everything is bad, but you haven't actually watched the good one? FFS.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:26 (six years ago)

I would like to cancel Harry Potter

papa stank (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:26 (six years ago)

xp yeah, i get that for a lot of people this is an opportunity to revisit childhood/fatherhood/motherhood and i am less vehement in my declaration of "STOP BUYING HORSESHIT ASSHOLES" toward that demographic. but the money spends either way!

how "good" is the "good one"? as good as Aniara or as good as Fast Color?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:27 (six years ago)

Solo is better than Rogue One, worse than Kin Dza-Dza

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:28 (six years ago)

that was the question, right?

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:28 (six years ago)

is Skywalker better than The Gods Must Be Crazy or worse than Warhol's Empire?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:30 (six years ago)

If you watch a Star War with the expectation of it being a Good Film you are doing it wrong afaict.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:32 (six years ago)

rogue one is so awful i can't believe people rep for it

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:33 (six years ago)

fixed

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:34 (six years ago)

needless inspirational speeches, bad jokes, too many characters who are just there to die

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:34 (six years ago)

i suppose my point is that, even more than most genre fiction, the scale for star wars related stuff is graded on such a vicious curve that I would very much like to hear 'it is good' from someone who is also watching a lot of other non-blockbuster movies so that i have likeminded hive thinking to base my viewing-investment on... especially given that i will never talk my gal L. into watching this stuff with me, so it would have to fit into highly-coveted 'watching on my own' time"
or basically Old Lunch otm

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:34 (six years ago)

It's like my old saw wrt the MCU: I love the hell out of those things but I know what they are. None of them should be popping up on year-end lists.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:34 (six years ago)

Hardware Wars is the most realistic Star Wars film because it has an actual waffle iron in it

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:35 (six years ago)

honestly i appreciate the level of generally better plotting, scripting and acting (than SW at least) that marvel aspires to and occasionally achieves. they have small moments! So does the mandalorian!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:37 (six years ago)

lol I was just about to mention the MCU as my own personal megafranchise that I can’t stand

glindr jackson (gyac), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:38 (six years ago)

I mean I'm not gonna poke that bees nest too severely but, yes, the MCU is like hella better and more coherent than the SW universe under Disney.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:41 (six years ago)

(And you can even just go ahead and strike out the 'under Disney' part tbrr.)

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:43 (six years ago)

disagree but don’t hate the MCU enough to go full ulysses on it itt

glindr jackson (gyac), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:43 (six years ago)

(Cue clusterfuck in 3...2...)

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:43 (six years ago)

FWIW I just last night started reading the novel Plagueis so I'm clearly a goddamn lost cause regardless of whatever junk culture franchise is under discussion at the given moment.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:44 (six years ago)

lmao i'm loving old lunch's journey through the star lore

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:45 (six years ago)

(TBF, it's real fucken bad/borderline unreadable so far and I only started it with the expectation that it would be the kind of quick read a sixth-grader could get through on a couple of school bus trips so I might very well stop.)

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:46 (six years ago)

one reason why i'm happy to go w/my kids to see star wars but have to be dragged to marvel movies is the sheer number of minutes the mcu dedicates to its joyless, undifferentiated fight scenes. crunch crunch crunch. fight fight fight BLEGH

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:48 (six years ago)

i had a looong EU phase when i was in middle school, can't imagine going back and reading any of those books today.

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:48 (six years ago)

This is a thing I've done a couple of times now, thinking I was going to take the EU plunge and see what's what but it never takes me long to realize that it's an ill-advised undertaking on par Bart Simpson licking a NYC subway pole.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:48 (six years ago)

Star Lore
Reading up on Star Lore

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:49 (six years ago)

The problem with watching Star Wars is that no one wants to sit next to me because I'm cursing at the screen and mumbling.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:51 (six years ago)

xxp your best bet is probably the timothy zahn thrawn books, but there's a whole lotta silliness in there that was appealing to 12-year-old me that just might not hold up to adult scrutiny

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:53 (six years ago)

luuke

adam, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 16:54 (six years ago)

My general impression of the SW universe is that it's comprised of a wealth of interesting tidbits and scenarios that very few people are able to weave into a compelling narrative.

― adam, Wednesday, January 8, 2020 11:54 AM (six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

yeah i think the "hand of thrawn" duology is stronger than the trilogy tbh, mostly because it involves slightly less cloning silliness

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 17:02 (six years ago)

Hey guys, there's a new, non-Legends Thrawn trilogy by Zahn starting soon!

(Don't know whether I'm more embarrassed about knowing this or about admitting that I know this.)

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 17:04 (six years ago)

if they bring back pellaeon, i could be convinced...to read the plot summary on wookiepedia

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 17:07 (six years ago)

And I would be thrilled to hear your brief encapsulation of that summary, friend.

Drive Like a Demon From Steakhouse to Steakhouse (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 8 January 2020 17:09 (six years ago)

should follow up tales from the mos eisley cantina and tales from jabba's palace with tales from idk the casino world? and tales from the sith temple in which we learn about each and every sith ghost or clone or whatever the fuck that was about

adam, Wednesday, 8 January 2020 17:33 (six years ago)
