I didn't hear about Larry Gogan - between him and Marian Finucane we could have a takeover.

RIP. Didn’t he write some multivolume tome about the history of sf magazines?

I know Resnick because he edited/wrote the intro for this: https://www.nesfa.org/book/the-passage-of-the-light/ which is great

I wrote an obituary for a woman who died in Buffalo, and the fact that she lived to 111 isn't close to being the most impressive thing about her. Please read: "Mamie Kirkland, Witness to an Era of Racial Terror, Dies at 111" https://t.co/vK6vsCUeGf

Intimate Lighting, Cutter's Way even better

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 January 2020 18:18 (six years ago)

Haven't seen Intimate Lightning--always wanted to--but I remember being a little disappointed in Cutter's Way when I finally saw it. Also quite a while ago, though.

DAMN.

Canadian rock drummer Neil Peart dead at 67. Peart, primary lyricist for Rush, was known for his technical proficiency, and for weaving jazz and big band patterns with a hard rock style. Publicist says Peart died in California January 7. Background: https://t.co/r0QKiYdpdu

new year, similar UK unknowns dominating the rolls

― a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, January 8, 2020 12:26 AM

I'd be quite happy to read about obscure celebrities from everywhere. But if you're serious about not wanting to hear about obscure UK celebrities, can all the americans here please pretend that Letterman, Jay Leno, Rip Taylor and Johnny Carson are just fictional characters who appear in American films, tv shows, Beach Boys songs and comics on occasion?

Was his illness public? Didn't they do a pretty extensive tour within the last 5 years?

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 January 2020 00:21 (six years ago)

Qaboos bin Said al Said of Oman has died after fifty years in power.

ShariVari, Saturday, 11 January 2020 00:29 (six years ago)

xpost It was not. He'd mentioned general health concerns and had indicated during the last tour, in 2015, that this was making him want to stop -- he framed in a strict sense of simply not having the energy and precision to perform up to his particular standards on a regular basis. This specific diagnosis was not, AFAIK, even rumored, and the mention of 3 1/2 years indicates to me that an exact diagnosis happened after the tour.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 11 January 2020 00:30 (six years ago)

xpost Well that's timing, as it were.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 11 January 2020 00:30 (six years ago)

Yeah...timing indeed.

The long-ailing sultan has no children or named successors. A sealed letter naming the next ruler is in Muscat. The sultan played a crucial role mediating among various regional rivals incl. Iran, Saudi, Qatar, Yemen. Will the next sultan be able to do the same? #Oman https://t.co/LQI3nJ9yvx

Norman Wisdom appeared in a William Friedkin film - The Night They Raided Minsky's - and Frankie Howerd is in The Ladykillers, so I would expect a cineaste of yr distinction to know their work, Morbs!
