Star Wars: The Mandalorian

I flew through the season this weekend. imo this is the closest a SW property has gotten to the tone of the originals: the adventure, the half-explained culture/mysticism, and also not afraid to slow down the pace (something the new trilogy really missed). I couldn't believe how bad the three middle less-plotty eps were in comparison to the rest though, like below-average eps of Farscape. I guess the prison break one was ok. If they can tighten the quality next season, this could be a truly excellent show

I liked this much more than any Star Wars film I’ve seen - though I didn’t watch any post phantom menace.

Bidh boladh a' mhairbh de 'n láimh fhalaimh (dowd), Sunday, 5 January 2020 12:42 (six years ago)

You liked it much more than the original movies? That’s certainly a take!

Into the Bro-known: One Dude’s ‘Frozen’ Podcast (morrisp), Sunday, 5 January 2020 18:24 (six years ago)

you know what, i'll cosign that take! Maybe not the first time I saw them, but I like the best of the mandalorian more than i like the best of SW1 or whatever the fuck the numbering system is.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 5 January 2020 18:28 (six years ago)

Not sure where to put this (the SW9 thread is full of “toxic fandom” or something), so I’ll put it here... kind of interesting rumor:

Into the Bro-known: One Dude’s ‘Frozen’ Podcast (morrisp), Sunday, 5 January 2020 18:33 (six years ago)

didn’t that site go full-on into publishing salacious rumors in the run up to the recent movie? the theory being that site traffic was going to peak before the movie release so anything for clicks was game

I dunno, it was linked somewhere else (CBR.com). If it’s not reputable, I retract my post, lol

Nobody has mentioned it but I also thought Ludwig Göransson did an amazing job with the score. Sometimes a little distracting but some really cool sound design and ideas

Vinnie, Monday, 6 January 2020 02:58 (six years ago)

I was listening to some of the episode scores on Amazon Music and they really are terrific. He is definitely doing some very different things for Star Wars, even more so than Kevin Kiner did on Clone Wars.

Pete Swine Cave (Eliza D.), Monday, 6 January 2020 03:03 (six years ago)

i have both mentioned it and nominated the theme for the ILX Song poll!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 6 January 2020 03:15 (six years ago)

oops so you did!

Vinnie, Monday, 6 January 2020 05:30 (six years ago)

Yeah the score is awesome.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 January 2020 08:20 (six years ago)

Loved the score. The processed recorder stuff is wonderful.

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Monday, 6 January 2020 14:19 (six years ago)

Nothing was ever concluded re: the mysterious figure at the end of the Amy Sedaris speeder bikes on Tatooine episode, was it?

Moff Gideon knew a lot about who Mando is, so do we assume it was him? Or just a bounty hunter tailing them?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 7 January 2020 10:27 (six years ago)

At the time everyone was assuming it was somehow Boba Fett but pretty sure it was Gideon

(although redditors are still convinced it was BF based on the sound effect used)

groovypanda, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 12:41 (six years ago)

in one of these episodes (maybe the last one? can't remember) someone flat out calls Gina Carano a 'human'. Have they used this word in Star Wars before? My son was like "WTF they're humans????"

Are the people in the Star Wars movies humans?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 14:15 (six years ago)

xpost -- yeah was wondering this myself. BF seems...a reach. Has he been resurrected in the Disney EU yet?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 January 2020 16:45 (six years ago)

Eliza probably knows better than I, but after consuming nearly all Star Wars media for the last two years in a final round before I theoretically walk away, my knowledge says: no

heh that's great.

Nhex, Friday, 10 January 2020 01:21 (six years ago)

as with almost everything star wars, this was fine but should have been a lot better. any little bit of originality at all might have been nice too

have 'tracking fobs' been used elsewhere in this universe? i have some questions about that technology

special props to the cara-mando relationship making no sense and giancarlo's entire strategy in town being absurd -- i mean holy shit 'i'll wait until nightfall for your decision' is beyond bond-level

liked that pillboi from the good place was one of the hapless villagers tho

mookieproof, Friday, 10 January 2020 04:07 (six years ago)

Buggin’s “Youu have something I waaaaaaaant” read had me in stitches

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 10 January 2020 04:49 (six years ago)

Cara & Mando made perfect sense to me - both disenfranchised former military loners trying to avoid the glare of the Republic and the ex-Empire, bump into each other on a faraway planet and recognise a kindred spirit, bond over a tussle, do a bit of work together, bond over baby Yoda, go separate ways as both still loners, reunite to help out baby Yoda again. Both hate the Empire and feel unwanted by the Republic. That's best friends material in Star Wars.

As for Moff Gideon's absurd monologuing, this is Star Wars and he's a villain.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 January 2020 11:15 (six years ago)

Yeah, I totally bought the Mando/Caro bonding, but agree that Gideon's "we'll wait until nightfall" was ridiculous, even by SW standards. You have an army surrounding the place, the people inside there have nothing to negotiate with, wtf do you gain by waiting for hours instead of asking them to surrender immediately or be shot to death?

Tuomas, Friday, 10 January 2020 11:51 (six years ago)

half the time cara is all 'you can't go in there alone!' and 'i won't leave you behind!' and the other half is 'actually i'm going to start a new life with carl weathers' and 'see you when our paths cross'

also it makes no sense for the droid to bring the kid into town, among other bizarre motivations

i mean, i don't care that the ships make noise in the vacuum of space etc etc, i just wanted more internal coherence

i have spoken

mookieproof, Friday, 10 January 2020 11:55 (six years ago)

Gideon doesn't want to shoot them to death cos he needs baby Yoda and baby Yoda at that point was AWOL cos IG11 had rescued him, so he's sweating them out until they surrender and lead him to baby Yoda.

Cara won't leave him alone in dangerous / combat situations because trained military / leave no man behind instinct. Soon as they're out of that she's happy to go their separate loner ways.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 January 2020 13:47 (six years ago)

I mean I can't believe I'm defending a Star Wars on the internet but this is not 'Emperor Palpatine grew a bazillion star destroyers undet the ocean with his mind' territory.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 January 2020 13:48 (six years ago)

Gideon's one of the first genuinely ominous characters from high in the Imperial ranks who's not played by a stuffy british man

babu frik fan account (mh), Friday, 10 January 2020 15:06 (six years ago)

have 'tracking fobs' been used elsewhere in this universe? i have some questions about that technology

Boba Fett put some sort of tracker on the falcon in ESB, not exactly the same, but close enough.

culture of mayordom (voodoo chili), Friday, 10 January 2020 15:14 (six years ago)

why then was gideon's initial move to have his dudes shoot the shit out of the bar (luckily leaving our heroes intact)? anyway if gideon knows everyone's name, and that baby yoda is elsewhere, and there are several dozen tracking fobs that can find him from planets away, i don't think he needs to sweat them out

good point about the territory tho

mookieproof, Friday, 10 January 2020 15:44 (six years ago)

if you've got them pinned in, better to get them now than to go on some damned fool crusade across the sector if they manage to get out

appreciated that obviously he was the authority over all stormtroopers, but the local squad was not very good compared to his personal troops. no wonder he didn't mind just blasting a bunch of what appeared to be his own men -- they're the scrubs who got posted at the ass end of the region

it makes no sense for the droid to bring the kid into town

this is sorta undeniable and handwaved away by mando needing to fly them out of town i guess but why is the robot bringing the child it has sworn to protect into a firefight?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 10 January 2020 20:02 (six years ago)

he's there to nurse and protect, but the protection extends beyond the child imo

also we really needed that cool speeder/blaster fight

The only thing I really chuckled at was the lava-river gondola droid, who can apparently only row on the port side, yet the boat goes perfectly straight (as if, say, on a "dark ride" track).

gondola droid should really have been a permanent character, I love that R2 design. is it used elsewhere in the films?

Paperbag raita (ledge), Friday, 10 January 2020 21:12 (six years ago)

over the last 40 years my mind never even conceived of a frankendroid like that existing and it kind of messed with my head to see it

Yeah that droid freaked me out a bit. However I lost my shit with delight when the stormtroopers showed up in a troop transport straight out of the 1978 Kenner catalogue.

this was a great detail. Having finally just caught Rise of Skywalker (now the worst subtitle in the series) I preferred the adventures of Mando by a significant margin.
